I brush my hair about once a day. I have just normal amount of hair in my brush. Nothing alarming. I wash my hair just once a week. When I wash my hair, I have about double the amount if hair in the drain trap compared to hair in my brush with a daily brushing.

Is it normal to lose more hair when washing and conditioning your hair? Why would more hair come out with washing? I am very gentle and use good shampoo. Only condition the ends, not the scalp. My hair is not colored, just natural. I do not blow dry, just air dry. No chemicals. I am just wanting to compare with you all what you find normal and what woukd be concerning.

Doesn't sound concerning to me. We all lose hair daily - I'm thinking on a average head about 150 hairs a day. You sound pretty normal.

I have very curly, fine, and often frizzy hair. I never comb or brush it when it's dry. I shampoo three times a week, which is when I apply conditioner wet and comb through it. And yes, I get a good pile of hair. Nothing to be concerned about.

Losing about 100 hairs a day is normal. Pregnant women lose less until after they deliver, then they lose all the dormant hair at once.

I wash my hair everyday and hardly see any hair in my brush. I must lose it while washing.

What you describe seems normal to me.

It's probably because you only wash once per week. I'm not against that, but you'd probably see less when washing if you were washing more often.

For me, I wash every other day and no matter what shampoo/conditioner I use, WEN included, I lose quite a bit when I rake it through. I just wipe it off it a paper towel so it doesnt go down the drain. If I wash it every day, it's much less shedding. I also comb it before I get in the shower to minimize in shower hairs. My hair is just as thick at 60 as it was at 20, so there you have it. Of course, as we all say, everyone is different.

As we get older we do lose more hair. My PCP has been quick to blame many things on aging as I passed 55. At 72 my hair has thinned up front like most ladies my age. I use JRs great hair day and it helps cover some. I have had hypothyroidism since my second child and about 65 I went to an arthritis specialist and he discovered that I also now have Lupus. All of these things and the medicine required can cause hair loss. My beautician had told me some time ago that losing 100+ hairs per day is normal and usually can increase with age. She also reminded me that I now have long hair so the same number of pieces will appear to look like more. If in doubt when you have your next yearly physical ask your doctor to check more when he does your blood test. Many answers can be gotten by this test very easily.

I shed a lot every year during late summer early fall...it still alarms me! I do have medium to long hair. I bought a hair trap for my drain last year which has saved me on my plumbing bill, lol. But now I actually see how much hair I lose that I never noticed before, because I have to clean it out after each shower.

If you only wash your hair once a week, that is the reason you are seeing more hair come out when you do wash. Hair sheds everyday, but usually stays on the head, until brushing or washing. Washing and conditioning will definitely bring the excess shed hair out, more so than brushing. So as far as i can tell, it sounds perfectly normal. If you washed your hair every other day or every day, you would see much less of the shedding when washing your hair. Totally normal. Also, as our hormones fluctuate, it does affect hair growth and shedding. Dont worry, it all sounds normal to me. And washing your hair once a week is very healthy and good for the hair, so it must look beautiful !
<LI-SPOILER> </LI-SPOILER>

I agree with the comments that mention you see more shedding due to washing your hair once a week. I used to wash my hair every day, but a few years ago I started washing my hair every 3 days (now it's every 2 or 3 days), and initially I was a little scared when I saw more hair being left in the shower afterwards. When I would wash my hair every day or every other day, I would find less hair in the shower. I eventually figured out why it seemed I was losing more hair. If you feel like it, you could try washing your hair every other day for a week, just as an "experiment," but I don't think you have to worry (I do understand, though!).

Edited to clarify: The amount of hair shedding when washing hair once a week vs. washing hair several times a week is the same. It just seems like more if you're only washing it once a week, as some of that hair would have shed sooner had you been washing it more times per week.

Maybe it seems alot for you only shampoo once a week? Maybe scalp buildup and oils are taxing your hair folicles and scalp? I would try shampooing twice a week and it might improve. I know I am sensitive to sulfates and loose hair unless I use a low sulfate gentle shampoo like a salon brand. I

notice I loose less hair if I alternate with sulfate free.

What also helps is brushing throughly before shampooing.

Unless you're brushing your hair often (I do not because it is so curly), the less often you shampoo, the more you'll notice shedding. Yes, you'd notice less if you shampooed more often, but in the long run, you're shedding the same amount. It's hair that was going to come it one way or the other. It's NOT hair loss; it's perfectly normal.
