"Black eyeliner looks too harsh on older women."

A beauty youtuber who is in her 40s said this in a video the other day. She said that older women (like her) should wear brown, not black eyeliner because black is too harsh. She got a lot of negative feedback for saying that.

What do you all think?

I feel like black liner makes my green eyes pop and will continue to use it no matter how old I am as long as I think it looks good.

Depends how they put it on. I don't agree that statement goes for everyone.

I've never liked black eye liner on myself, even when I was younger. I'm fair-skinned and felt it was too harsh for me. I do use black when lining my upper rim and the blacker the better for that. I don't line my lower rim at all. I think it depends on the person and their skintone and what they like to wear and are comfortable wearing.

Black liner can look harsh on any one in my opinion depending on the application. You don't have to be older for that to happen. I use black liner somtimes depending on what I am wearing and the other makeup I am wearing. It is not an absolute one way or the other for me.

The way eyeliner is applied has more to do with it looking harsh (or not) than color or age.

Well, I'm 56 so I don't think 40 is "older". And I think it's just a matter of personal opinion. My personal opinion for myself is that eyeliner makes my eyes look smaller and it gives me harsh or mean look so I don't wear eyeliner. I stopped wearing it about 10 years ago. I don't care if other women wear it and don't care if they wear black, brown or sky blue. None of my business.

I think it is different from person to person.

To me black liner makes my eyes look small, so I don't use it, also I am very fair.

Everyone can look in a mirror and make a choice about what they like best.

If you have questions as to which looks best on you, you can always try one color on one eye and different color on the other eye.

As someone with heavier eyelids, I've never been able to wear black liner. It does make lids look heavier. Also have amber eyes and black does nothing for them. Think it more depends on eye shape and the color of your eyes.

I think it depends on one's skin and hair color. I am light/ medium skin tone and highlighted hair and I don't look good with black liner.

I quit wearing black eyeliner about a month ago. It was just too dark for me at this age, and actually I like my eyes a lot better this way. It does look better to not wear this.

many years ago I worked for a makeup artist who did off broadway show ladies.

He did my makeup and told me since I have small eyes I should never use black eye liner. Anyone with small, close set eyes or heavy lids should wear either, browns, plums, greens, navy etc. shades like that. He said if you have small or close set eyes to start with black will just appear to close them even more.

I have hazel/green eyes and have a light complexion but with very dark brown hair.

I use and like (after his recommendations) deep plum, purple, khaki, green, deep grey or charcoal but never black anymore. I find I look much nicer, more open eyes.

He also said if you have small or close set eyes you should start at the outer corner and going toward the center but start to lighten up at the center than gradually go to nothing at the nose end(inner corners) of the eyes. It is the same technique for top and bottom lining.

I find black looks very harsh on me after him showing me how to apply eye liner and really like the look of my eyes a whole lot better.

As so many say though, up to each to decide what they like and the look they like and prefer.

Your youtuber has limited vision. Does she not see people whose skin has more color than hers, the women who invented kohl eyeliner?

A statement like that cannot be made inclusive for all! It comes from a beauty youtuber who is a wannabe beauty expert. Just because she can put a video online, doesn't make what she says absolute!! It depends on the application and the liner used. A black line alone is usually not a great look on most regardless of age and a soft black pencil looks different than a liquid liner. When used in combination with shadow and blended properly the eyes can be made more noticeable and it can make the face and eyes look a bit younger by drawing attention from wrinkles. I apply eyeshadow then line with stilla black waterproof liner and then soften the black line with a pencil liner above the black line in either milk chocolate brown, purple or a soft turquoise and the black liner just highlights my eyes enough to stand out. I get many compliments on them. Brown liner does nothing to enhance my eyes at all and makes them look washed out. I have large eyes but can see where darker liner and shadows could possibly make smaller hooded eyes look even smaller. What works for me won't work for everyone.

Totally agree. I've seen it look great on older women and really lousy on younger women. It's all in the application.

I think it would depend on what your coloring is and how you apply it.

I am blonde and never used black eyeliner or mascara....always brown...

I only use black to tightline my upper lid.

A poor example of black eyeliner overload is the vendor for Elysee, Linda.

She is smart and well put together , very knowledgable ,but she has such dark use of the line over and under her eyes that's all I see. jmho

What are this You Tuber's qualifications? I find so many of these self-appointed make-up experts know nothing and have no real expertise. I watch Wayne Goss's videos every now and then and find him highly credible. Most of the others I've seen don't know anything. Goss was making fun of other You Tubers telling people to put highlighter on the tip of the nose a few months ago. He knows what he's doing and most of the rest of them do not.
