Bobbi Brown Lipstick Smell

I ordered a trio of lipsticks from her site a few months ago, and recently started to use them after I had used up another brand. Two of them smell like they have gone bad. I Googled her lipstick, and most of the negative reviews are about the smell. Anyone out there who has gotten Bobbi Brown lipstick who finds the smell offensive? There is the possibility, of course, that the lipsticks were manufactured so many years ago that they actually have gone rancid.

If they smell bad, then they have passed their prime. You can contact them, but if it's been months since you ordered them I don't know how they will respond. I know that I have lipsticks that are old & still smell fine & some go "off" faster.

I haven't had that experience with her lipsticks but I did have it with some Bobbi Brown foundation I tried. It had a weird chemical odor that just didn't dissipate. It stayed all day. I actually returned it and I rarely return anything like that.

I have a couple of her lipsticks that are well over a year old and neither have any odor.

Bobbi Brown, Tom Ford and Trish McEvoy are known to go bad (rancid) VERY quickly. The #1 complaint for all 3 is receiving a "bad" lipstick when ordering online. Return them as there is no way to fix them. Also, many (including me) find that our lips tingle/burn when using them at this point. The companies claim that the smell makes no difference as it's just the masking fragrance wearing off and the "crayon smell" is simply the natural wax smell.

I know that rancid smell in a lipstick, and I can't stand it. I don't know if it can hurt me or not, but I have to throw it out when that happens. I don't know why some go bad quicker than others, but from what I've noticed in my lipsticks it's the ones that are more "waxy" in texture that seem to go bad sooner than the ones that are "creamier."

I think that you are right, as I seemed to have noticed the same thing regarding the differences between the waxier and the creamier lipsticks, when going bad.

Being a lipstick lover, I have a few go bad before I could use them up, and I throw them out. I can't stand the smell nor the feel of them after that....I don't know if they can hurt your lips or not, but I can't get past the smell....

Ugh, rancid lipsticks...haven't we all experienced that happening?

That's why I won't buy IT Cosmetics lipsticks anymore, I have had two of them go bad when they were only about 6 months since they were purchased. Never again!

I also won't buy Lancome or L'Oreal lipsticks as they put a lot of perfume in their lipsticks.

I always smell a lipstick tester to see if it's scented or not.

I had it happen with Laura Geller lipsticks as well. And it seems the more sheer composition goes bad faster, but that could be just because I use more of those so notice it when it happens. It's annoying.

I really think that Lancome has some beautiful lipsticks, but I agree with you about the fragrance.

That's one thing that I didn't like about the line, was the fragrance that was in their products that I had tried and used.

It would just "really get to me," and so I would try products and then just not buy them again.

But, I thought that they made great lipstick. I just didn't like "tasting" that fragrance in them. It was like "ick" for me.

Toppers, the Lancome Color Design seems to be unscented now, or at least I can't detect a noticeable odor or taste. The Rouge in Love is another matter. It smells like someone threw a bouquet of roses in your face!

Thanks for letting me know.

As mentioned, I loved their lipsticks, except for the fragrance/taste.

I'll have to check them out again, and see.

I used to like their gifts with purchase, and their gift sets at the holidays.

I am glad to read your post as I don't remember anyone stating this problem regarding Josie Maran's color sticks. I bought 2 full sized ones and after just a couple months they went bad. I also had to throw out 2 of her lipsticks, the same thing happened. I also have had this problem with Estee Lauder, L'Oreal and Tom Ford. mmmm? aren't those last three all owned by E.L.?

I think a lot of lipstick sets, like the Bobbi Brown one I bought, are thrown together by cosmetic companies in order to sell out back stock of expiring products and/or unpopular colors.

I also trust the cosmetic companies who have regular gift with purchase events, because they get more women to buy from them, and their stock sells instead of sitting on the shelf. They are also more reasonably priced. When I go to my local Macy's, the deadest beauty counter is always Chanel, who never has a GWP and whose prices are sky high.

Lastly, I think Nordstrom's has their twice a year Mascara Madness, in order to the clear the shelves of mascara, which is the one beauty product that you have to use up before 3 years has passed since the date of manufacture - even if it's never been opened. I told them they should also have a Lipstick Madness.

Much as I love Josie's products I have never been able to keep one of the color sticks for more than 6 months. Also, I got a lipstick trio from Mally last year and ended up tossing two tubes of it within six months because I could not stand the smell of them.
