Root Touch Ups

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, easy to use hair dye for roots. I can't get an appt for 2 weeks and my roots needed help now! I hate paying those big bucks anyway and have been thinking of trying this for some time. I get highlights about every 3

visits, which I definitely would continue at the salon. Any products that work well for root touch ups. Any application tips? TIA!

I'm a big fan of fast and easy ..... so I use Batiste Dry Shampoo on my roots. It comes in various colors and Medium Brown works perfectly on my hair. I can do my whole head in about 30 seconds. In addition to covering my roots, the dry shampoo absorbs any excess oil, giving me another day between shampoos. You can get Batiste in beauty supply stores or on Ebay.

I buy Colorsilk haircolor. I have to do my roots every 2-3 weeks. The gray is so white and my natural color (was) brunette.

To do my roots I only need a 1/4 to 1/3 of it. I don't measure it out, just eyeball it. I mix it in a glass bowl. I use the end a brush to create a part. Apply to roots only.

I use Revlon Colorsilk, also. I use the brush and mixing container that came with that color that you buy for your roots (cannot remember the name). Love that brush, but decided to just use regular color after I tried that root color once. Price-wise, it is more advantageous.. I only do this on the top and sides of my hair. Just section your hair off with a clippy.

I use Clairol Root Touch up, 10 minutes and it lasts me another 3-4 weeks.

I do mine often and I like Nice and Easy Root Touch Up. I buy a couple of boxes as you don't get a lot of product. I starting using my fingers to apply the dye, rather than the comb, and it goes fast. It lasts about 3 weeks give or take. Good luck.

while I do use the Revlon Color Silk I also use Just for Men only for beards and mustaches. It comes with 2 tubes you just mix equal amounts of each than apply. It does come with a brush. It lasts a long time.

I also use this on my eye brows using a tooth pick to apply, let on 5 minutes than rinse.

I've used all the major brands of root touchup kits and they are all fine. Clairol's root touchup kit does not have enough product to do your whole head so buy two kits.

You can also use a half a box of hair color to do a root touch up like I do as I do not pull the color through the rest of my hair, I only color the roots.

Buy a box of disposable non latex gloves as the ones that come in any box of hair color are not very good and you may want to use one pair to color your hair and a different pair to rinse the color out.

Wear a robe or shirt you don't mind getting dye on when you color your hair as it can be a bit messy.

When my grays start showing along my temples and I can't get in to see my stylist, I use mascara to cover them up. It works like a charm!

Rita Hazan root concealer spray - originally purchased from QVC, but recently found at Ulta; works GREAT but a bit $$$

L'Oreal root coverup - available at Walgreen's - works well & more affordable

There are others at Ulta. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many root coverups and even dry shampoos with color, as someone mentioned. These are all temporary, spray in & wash out colors. I only let my hairdresser apply color, so these sprays work wonders when it's a week or two before the next appointment.

How do you keep your roots from coming up lighter? Whenever I try using a root cover for some reason the top of my hair winds up lighter than the bottom? Any suggestions, besides the obvious of going to a salon!!!

my problem too. I've used several different brands of root touch up products. my roots always seem to be brighter than the rest of my hair, which is not the look I want.

Just For Men for Beards and Mustaches seems to work the best for this problem. Right here on QVC Joan Rivers product is also nice, a powder(brush isn't the best so I use a swivel up foundation brush). This not only covers grey roots but also adds a bit of volume, give this a look online here too.

I would recommend either one of these 2 products and I use both, depends on how I feel at the time but do reach for JR a lot.

Thanks for all the replies! Sister Golden Hair my hair is medium to dark brown. I asked my stylist if I should use medium or dark brown and she said medium as the dark brown is very dark. I am a bit chicken. Do you leave the dye in according to directions or longer? I have a fair amount of gray and don't won't to have lighter roots.

If you have not colored your hair yourself before, then I would try the Clairol Nice n Easy Root touchup kit in color 5 medium brown. One box will only cover roots for about half the head so buy two boxes. It comes with a brush and small mixing tray and you mix the bleach and coloring product that's in the tube and then apply to the roots with the brush. Supposedly it takes only 10 minutes to leave on then wash out but if you are very gray, leave it on longer, maybe 20 minutes at least. There's no conditioner that comes with this root touchup kit so be sure and condition your hair after you wash the coloring out.

Agreed, @TY.

I would add that if your hair always "pulls" red or brassy with hair color (like mine does), that you get the Medium Ash Brown instead.

It's the same with "all over" color; using an "ash" or "cool" shade will counteract any unwanted reddish/brassy tones.
