OT High School Graduation gift amount?

My husband and I have been invited to an open house for a young man who I met once when he was 12. His mother is someone I met through business and we don't see each other socially. We will be out of town the day of the open house, but I'd like to send a monetary gift. How much would you send?

Did you meet her through business or do you work closely together for business?

Based just on what I've read here, I wouldn't send anything.

That's a big question. I would say whatever you can afford for an acquaintance. Only you can decide.

No, not closely. He appears to be a nice young man- into sports and theater, etc. I think I will send $25.00. I'm sure he'll appreciate it. It all spends!

50 dollars, or if you don't know them at al,l really it is okay to do nothing. Sometimes it is best to do nothing in these situations. But if you really wanted to go, and can't I would say 50 bucks is standard here. 100 dollars if they are close friends, and if they are grandkids...well, don't even go there, LOL! hahahah

@Marybella, I think that is very generous of you and it was more than just an announcement. You were invited to the open house, so I think a gift is in order. I actually think $20 is enough.

Honestly, this doesn't sound like a "relationship" that would require any gift at all, but more of a gift grab - JMO. Really, you haven't seen him in 5-6 yrs. and only "met" him when he was 12, for Pete's sake. It's totally up to you, how to proceed, but you don't have to feel obligated just because you received an invitation to his party. If you're dead set on sending something, get a card and stick a $20 in it.

Sometimes they register at places like Bed Bath and Beyond (things for college).

I've seen so many of these kids get this money and spend it on partying. I guess to some people that's fine but it should be spent on college stuff.

Wait until the find out how much all of the college stuff costs, etc! Ha!

Casual friends, I give a check in the amount of the graduate's year.

This year would be: $20.16

My son graduated last year. The going rate for friends and the parties we were invited to was $50.00.

I think $25.00 is more than generous if you can swing it otherwise, in this situation, I think I would just send a card..

Since you asked how much you should send, and NOT should you do it ( I don't get these posters who won't answer what is asked, but instead give advice on a topic you didn't ask about).

It's a nice gesture that you are making and I think for a high school graduate that you don't know well, a $25-$30 gift card would be nice. If you knew the person well, maybe $50.

I think it is gracious of you to send a monetary gift I hope the young man is gracious enough to acknowledge it and write you a thank you note.

Thank you. I am retired and not getting too many invitations to these kinds of events, so the $25.00 won't be a burden. From what I read about him in the newspaper, he is a terrific young man on his way to a great university in the fall. I'm sure I'll get a thank you!
