How long do you keep your eyeliner sharpener if you use one?

Those of us who don't have an automatic sharpener-

How many months do you use a sharpener? Seems The rack is often empty when I look. I'm thinking I don't change mine often enough.

I guess I didn't realize that they were supposed to be replaced. I only buy a new one when I can't find the old one. I don't use it that often.

I had a Revlon one for many years and still have it for emergencies, but it has lost the edge on the razor blade over time.

I ended up getting this one at Sephora and this has a small plastic tool for removing any excess shavings that get stuck on the blade. It is not visible in the photo below.

I keep mine until they stop working.

but all of my current liners come with their own sharpeners on the end of the pencil. I can't recall the last time I needed to use a separate sharpener.

I guess I'm the exception. In 1974, yes the stone age, I decided to try some Mary Kay products. One was a sharpener with a small and large port. The interesting thing about this is that I still have it and use it. It has never dulled.

@sfnative*****Wow! I was a college senior then and using Maybeline liquid eyeliner! I didn't actually go to pencils intill Revlon developed their Color Stay line. I gave those up and went to Mally!

When you have deep set eyes, if it works, it works!

I agree with the other posters. I have a sharpener or two that are probably 20 years old.

Mine last forever. I'll take a Qtip and some alcohol and clean the blades inside when they start looking like they're getting too gunked up.

I understand that. The reason I asked because the OP sounded like she uses a sharpener for only a few months .... it's not like pencils need to be sharpened daily! I would think even the cheapest pencil sharpener would last for at least a year or two.

I don't have a regular schedule for this, bit if I had to guess, a sharpener lasts for about 5 to 10 years. I have a fabulous metal Elizabeth Arden sharpener that I've had for about 20 years. They all still work fine. I would guess if sharpeners are from the dollar store they will wear out quite quickly.

Are you supposed to use a special eyeliner sharpener for eyeliners? I have a small battery-operated pencil sharpener I keep in a bathroom drawer. I think I got it at a drugstore, or was it an office supply store.....? Anyway, it works great and only takes a second or two to get a perfect point. I've had that sharpener for at least 10 years and, so far, have never had to change the batteries.

@tototwo , I don't think you need a special sharpener that is specifically made for cosmetics. Some can be overpriced. When my son was young and I would buy him school supplies, I would often get a pack of sharpeners at the drugstore and even the dollar store because he would often loose them. I'd keep one sharpener from the pack for myself. What is important is that you get a clean smooth shaprening, without any little wood shavings.

@Tinkrbl44*****Actually, I was using my eyeliner pencil the other day and thought: "They" (magazines, other sources) tell us to throw away mascara after six months because of bacteria. We sharpen a pencil often enough to keep it clean (about every three days), I wonder how much bacteria builds up on the sharpener and when does that little blade become dull?

The ladies here have so much info, I thought there might be some "common knowledge" I missed because I just use it and am not particularly interested in it.

One more thing came to mind ..... I have no idea why some sharpeners can last decades and others dull out after a few months, but we don't all sharpen pencils with the same frequency. either. Some never do if they are using the automatic pencils. I have a lot of those.

If I had to guess, I doubt I sharpen anything on my tray of pencils any less than every 6 to 8 weeks. It depends on what you are using.

All of the pencils I used to have (eye and lip) that needed sharpening had the tips break off inside the sharpener every time I tried to sharpen them, so I gave up on those and now only use the automatic ones.
