ComPact 2016 -- January

The ComPact is a commitment to simplify, pare down, streamline. It began as a way to gain some control over our collections of beauty products. Why were we amassing so much, yet not using what we were buying? Why were we always searching for the next new product? Why couldn't we just find what worked for us and stick with it?
The ComPact, however, is not restricted to beauty items. If you have a collection you want to address, do it here. Choose an area you want to work on, and track your progress on the ComPact thread. Members will offer tips and encouragement.
Choose one of our many mantras (“One by one until they’re done!” “We are SPAHHHRRRTAN!!!” “Not until you really have to.” “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” “Resist the propaganda.” "If it's high, I don't buy!" “When in doubt, do without!” “Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.” “Shoplighters of the World Unite!”) or create a new one and share it. Love the idea "resist the propaganda"! My goal this year is absolutely no shopping channel buying! I have a strong will so I don't think I'll need any help, but great idea!

I seriously stocked up last month on my Philosophy bath/body products. I should be good for 6 months. And I also stocked up on Laura Geller's Baked Elemdnts during a recent sale. It's my favorite everyday foundation. I do love to try new products but I've decided I'm going to try Laura's new TSV this month and that's it! Seriously, that's it! But I typically straddle porcelain and fair so I'll probably need to order both to try and return one of them. And except for a new primer and eyeshadow primer that I'll need next month, I don't need anything else for atleast 6 months. Good luck to me, I just need to practice some impulse control. And good luck to everybody else!

Count me in again, its really become a way of life!

Unfortunately I can't post how many products I've used up this year as I kept trackof it with the weekly thread What did you use up this week? But when the boards changed I lost most of posting history. Buts thats ok I know I used up a lot!

I am proud to say my handsoap stash is all gone! My last one a 16 oz. Perlier Honey No Soap is open and half gone at the kitchen sink. No more handsoap for me, I will be refilling with shower gel at all sinks now to use my stash up.

One of compact goals was to use up my showergels from brands that were not my favorite. I am still working my stash down to that goal. I have made progress and hope to accomplish this goal this year.

I will also continue to get rid of unwanted clothes, one thing I started but didn't finish.

One thing in my makeup collection I will finish this year is my Laura Geller Babycakes palette. I have one blush left in the palette that I have hit pan on! I will choose another blush to pan when this is done. And sheesh is it taking a long time!

2016, will be my Supersize year. I am going to see how many supersize things I can use up. I have way too many taking way too much space. I plan to use up supersizes in showergel, body lotion, moisturizer, serum and perfume. I will use up things I have open now then move on to supersizes. Except for my showergels that I use up as handsoap, they will be the brands that I want to get rid of and not supersize.

I really want to keep up not buying anything new unless something is used up. Don't want to add to the stash.

I will keep posting on the What did you use up this week thread. It helps keep me accountable and I really love seeing the end result and tally. (miss that this year).

I wish you all luck this year. And I thank you all for being there for me on this journey. I love reading all your goals, and accomplishments. You all mean more to me than you know! And welcome to all the newcomers, this is a great place to be.

Happy New Year! I hope 2016 is a great year. I am planning on it.

New quarter alert! Time to change your toothbrush and mascara.

We survived DD's party, but I am exhausted. DD wanted to keep the Christmas decorations up for the party, so tomorrow they will be packed away. Our tree is just so sad. We have always bought our trees from a small local place. This year, we needed new lights, and a big, national store had trees. To save a trip, we bought one. Epic failure.

When we brought it home, we put it in the stand immediately and gave it water. We never had to water it, again. It did not drink a drop. Then, I remembered a few years ago a local tree seller told me that the trees for the big stores are cut way before the stores pick them up, so they are not fresh when people buy them. I wish I had remembered this before we bought our tree. It is brittle. To top it off, the branches dropped unevenly. Some are resting on the floor, and there are two big holes in the center of the tree. A sad, sad tree.

I still haven't put together a ComPacting plan for the entire year. For now, I am sticking with my January no-buy and will take things month-by-month.

Ulta sent me a new catalog, and I noticed new Bare Minerals skin care products. How do companies come up with new stuff all the time? At least, it seems like all the time. This has got to be a marketing strategy to just sell, sell, sell. They understand the mindset of consumers. Keep buying and trying new things. That is why I had to join the ComPact. To change that mindset.

A new Sherlock episode is about to start!!!!!!!

Happy New Year, Everyone. May we all have a great year.

On the compacting front, this is really my use up year. I am really looking forward to reducing all of these bottles and jars. I want this to be the last time I am in this spot. I did identify a budget that I will set aside for wants and allow myself a thing or two during the year. But I am keeping it strict. It will be challenging.

I have a few products I may give away. Just not sure I will get around to using them so I want to give them away since they are not old. Someone else can enjoy them.

I will continue decluttering. I already have another box going and throw things in there as I go along. I really would like to reduce as much as I can.

I really am looking to make some lasting changes this year.

Happy New Year everyone!!

I haven't posted in a long time, but I continue to read all the posts. I'm still working on simplifying and compacting and I got a lot done last year. During the course of the summer I went thru just about every room in the house and took many car loads of items to Salvation Army. I'm going to start another round of decluttering on Jan 4, I've been following a blog called Mary Organizes and she is doing a 13 week declutter, so I'm going to follow along with that. I don't expect to have nearly as much to get rid of this time around, but every little bit helps! It still just amazes me that every time I go thru a room I can still find items to get rid of. It really is an endless process.

I did some shopping around the holidays and I think I'm pretty well stocked up on everything for several months. I am looking at some Bumble and Bumble hair products for my dry hair, I got a sample of their hair oil and really like it, and I will need an eye cream, but I can't think of anything else that I'll need anytime soon. My problem is that I still am having an awful time finding HG items. I pretty much have it narrowed down to which fragrance products I like and I did get a Philosophy TSV on auto delivery that will come twice more this year, so I'm trying to work thru the rest of my BBW items that I don't love so that I just have items here that I really like. But I cannot find skin care that I really love. I've tried SO many things, and I still end up disappointed. I just don't know what to do on that front. I used to like Philosophy many years ago, and I do have a large 4oz Hope in a Jar that I got off e-bay to try again. If I like that maybe I'll just switch back to Philosophy. I've thought about trying Isomers, but I don't want to fall in love with something and then not want to repurchase it because it's too expensive if it's not a special price. Who would have thought that something as silly as skin care would become such a dilemma?

So, this year my goals are to really try to focus on using up or tossing items that I don't love so that I'll have mostly items here that I do love and want to use. I'm sick of making myself use products that I just don't love but feel like I have to use up. And I'd like to see if I can find some more HG products so that I quit bopping around trying different stuff all the time.

Sorry for the long post and vent, thanks for listening! I hope to be posting more this year!

Stocking up works when you are stocking the items you love and actually use. Also when you can get them on sale with free shipping. If you have everything you need for six months -- or even a year -- why continue browsing? Keep your items organized and in plain sight. Whenever you feel like you might want to try something new, look at what you've stocked. Do you really need a new item? What if you discover you prefer the new item to what you've already stocked? This is where stocking up gets tricky. Why put yourself in that position?

I stock mascara and eyeliner for the entire year. I have a supply of toothbrushes and toothpaste. I have my Konjac sponges and body Buf-Pufs. I just stocked lip balm for the year. I have plenty of CC cream and BB serum. Still working on the shower gel stash and making progress. Just bought five pounds of tea in December. I have a new tote bag (a freebie from the hospital). I have my 2016 calendar. Plenty of work shoes. My pens still have ink. I have what I need for 2016.

1. It does become a way of life! You're simply developing new habits. Truth be told, it's just a new addiction. You're probably becoming addicted to more space and less clutter. For me, life is simpler because I have fewer choices to slow me down. I can't believe how much time I wasted standing in front of 100 bottles of shower gel, wondering what scent would match my mood. Or change my mood. Ridiculous! Just stock a couple scents that make you happy and be done!

2. Using shower gel at the sinks has made such a difference! I like to use up "seasonal" scents if I have them. It's a good way to put a dent in super sizes, too. I'm finally using that bananas foster! One day all the philosophy and B&BW will be gone! (At that point I may have to pull out all the bar soap I collected and never used.)

3. Must prune my closets this year. Makes more sense than buying more hangers. Am I really going to wear all those old Hawaiian shirts? Back in the 80s I bought several Victorian-inspired flannel nightgowns. These things were just beautiful and the flannel was heavy, but so soft. And then I never wore them. I don't wear nightgowns -- haven't in decades. When Better-half's mother visited recently, she asked me if I had an oversized shirt she could use to sleep in. Light bulb over the head. Not only did I have an unused flannel nightshirt, but I had all those gowns. She tried one of the gowns and fell in love. They now have a new home and they're being used.

4. I bought my LG palette in 2010. Still haven't made a dent in it. Only one shadow has dwindled to the point where I can say I hit pan. My Subaru was killed in 2012 and did not survive me as I had planned; however, I might exit stage right before this palette does.

5. Yup! You can put off replacing items longer than you think. The sale that is so tempting will come 'round again. Date your items with a Sharpie to get a feel for how long your basics really last.

6. Ditto on your last paragraph! It really is a journey and it's such a fun one with you wonderful human beings. I so enjoy reading all your posts. Smart, funny, quality ladies here.

1. My New Year's Eve at work was... well, let's just say that if the first day of the year is any indication of how the rest of the year will go, just give me back 2015 now. But out of the chaos came my theme for 2016. I always try to come up with a word or catchphrase to help guide me as I navigate the new year and I was having a devil of a time. I got home from work and told Better-half about it and he uttered a phrase that is now mine for the year. Can't type it here, but I'll provide this much: "PTFD." Now that I have my phrase, I'm ready for 2016. Bring it on!

Does anyone else have a word or phrase for 2016?

2. I have been looking forward to the new quarter! I get to change out my mascara, toothbrush, Konjac sponge, razor blade, body Buf-Puf, Brita filter, calendar and tote bag. I'm sure I'm forgetting something. I'm going to force myself to switch up my shoes and jewelry and not get into the rut of wearing my favorites day in and day out. Maybe I'll start wearing my rainbow snake Alegrias next week...

Yes, I do wear silly shoes in public.

3. Love your sad tree. For me this is a sad time of year because I see all the Christmas trees that are kicked to the curb after they've served their purpose. You were part of our family, but we don't need you anymore. Bye-bye. Yes, I know I should talk to a professional about this.

4. January will be practice for you, dosey. A plan must be developed with care. These things must be done... delicately. Focus on January and the rest will follow.

When this thread started, most of us were searching for the perfect skincare and cosmetics line. We wanted to simplify by putting our loyalty and resources into one company. What did we get? Debt and disappointment. We do like convenience, don't we? Better-half and I had this conversation again last night. Do we go with one-stop shopping for convenience and settle for mediocrity or do we plan a little better and find a butcher, a baker, a charcuterie, a tea shop -- places that specialize and make our lives a little bit special?

Which HGs are you still searching for? I've settled on most of mine, but could still use a dependable shampoo and conditioner. The ladies here might be able to help!

Hi, all!! Well, I've had to go to Target the past two days, and I'm really proud of myself for not buying anything for myself! (that place is like a mine field for me!!) Just got a few things for the home to store Christmas decorations (they had taken on a mind of their own!), and a Christmas wreath on sale (things I will USE & LOVE!) No more buying cr@p bc it's on sale. No more!! I have a few items I need to return that didn't fit, and then I'll be done with stores & shopping for a very long time, since I literally need nothing. I love using up things and being able to move on to the next. And it's good motivation to burn candles and slather on lotion - there are more, and you don't need them all in your life! I took down the Christmas decorations yesterday, so it's nice to be starting fresh. @rnmom, I'll be doing the Mary Organizes challenge, too. I did it last year, and it's awesome. I got rid of lots of things, reorganized, and felt better in my home. I keep our home pretty much clutter-free except for two rooms: 1. hubby's office - I can't do anything about it, so let's not talk about it. But to his defense, the holiday decorations are kept in there. 2. a tiny storage room upstairs, where I keep wrapping supplies, gifts, luggage, candles, soap, my stash, etc. I can do something with one of them, so I will try my best to minimize what's in there. But the challenge is great for helping you really hone in on things you don't want, use or need, so I'll do it again in the hopes of eliminating unnecessary items in our house.

I took down the Christmas decorations yesterday, so it's nice to be starting fresh.

1. I stopped donating to a certain charity that was sending me a lovely calendar every year and this year it appears they've cut me off. (I'm donating to charities that don't bombard me with mail and advertising: It makes me wonder how much of my donation actually goes to the cause.) Anyway, on my way home from work yesterday, I stopped at Walgreens for a 2016 calendar. Got my discount so it was half-off -- three bucks and change. I glanced at the clearance items and resisted the urge to buy Christmas items at 70+% off.

2. I need to start burning candles. They're taking up space. What do you ladies do with the ones in the glass jars and containers? Do you try to save the jar or just toss it?

My lotion collection concerns me. I think my vanilla bean noel has turned. I have enough to moisturize Mars. So dumb.

3. I plan to put Christmas cards and my wreath away before I go back to work. My door will be n_ked once more.

Did anyone notice a drop in cards and email greetings this year, or am I just forgettable? I'm not complaining: I can't throw away cards I receive, so it's actually a good thing for me. But I sensed a bit of gloom this holiday season. New Year's was a little down, too. My coworkers took a couple minutes to toast at midnight (sparkling grape juice), but I did not sense joy.

Was 2015 a tough year for you? Are you looking forward to 2016?

@just bee, if candles are just in a simple glass container, I chunk them. I have some beautiful decorative holders that I place candles in plain jars in, and just remove the entire inner holder when it's done, and that one gets throw out. if it's a smaller candle that is in a nice do creative holder, I *might* keep it, to put a small candle or votive in, for a bathroom or such.

Hubby and I got more Christmas cards than usual this year, which is great with me. I love them. But I did notice that far fewer of our friends celebrated NY this year. We didn't, either, and I was fine with it. Our December was very busy, and I was kind of done with celebrating. I'm not a huge NY person, anyway.

It is so nice reading all of your posts. Why does how much we have in commom still surprise me?

Winter has finally arrived. It is cooler today. I've had to continue applying tick and flea protection to my cat because of the warm weather. I like giving him a few months off, but it won't happen this year.

This morning, I tossed two eyeliners - one causes my eyelids to itch and the other is not flattering. This leaves two eyeliners that I use. I have also decided that when I find an eyeshadow color that I do not like, I am going to pop that pan out of the palette. Eventually, I will only have eyeshadows that I will use.

I foolishly think I am on top of my kitchen pantry, but expired products tell me differently. This week, I threw away a bottle of Season All, a can of bread crumbs, and an unopened bottle of mustard that was in the back of the pantry. Yes, it is an ongoing effort.

Rnmom, I feel the dilemma, too. I use Isomers and have never been happier with my skin. The Super Skin Serum is fantastic. I would call the C cleanser, cream, serum, and peel my HG items if it were not for the cost. In a kit, the price is not bad, but the individual pieces are expensive. I ran out of the cleanser (super small bottle) and have not replaced it due to the cost. Now, I am using the double duty cleanser but won't rebuy it because it stings a bit. Eventually, I will have to find a great cleanser. When I am close to running out of the other C things, I will look for a well-priced kit. Hope there is one available. Perhaps there will be a C TTV. See? Skin care shouldn't take this much effort!

When it comes to stocking up, I am no longer going to stock up for more than six months, and I am only going to buy the basics. I just never know when my skin, hair, or taste will change leaving me with a bunch of unused stuff.

Most of the candles I burn do not come in nice containers. I put them in holders that I have at home. There is only one container that I have saved. It is made of thick clear glass and looks like a box with a removable lid. I turned the lid upside down and placed it under the holder. It has been repurposed as a lipstick/lip gloss holder. In the dining room/office, I am burning a huge VPH candle that I have had for years. It smells like apple cinnamon spice. The candle is on a green cake platter with a tall base. There is a berry wreath around the candle. I pull this candle out every fall.

We do not receive nearly as many Christmas cards as we used to. Donald Trump sent us one. Did anyone else get one from The Donald?

2015 was a hard year, and I am glad it is over. What is it about the year changing that makes us feel like we can start over? We went from December 31 to January 1. It was only a one day difference, just like any other day. I do have a phrase that will be my 2016 mantra. Brave. Strong. Courageous. That is what I will repeat to myself when things are tough.

My throat is sore, my glands are swollen, and my back hurts. Maybe I am going to get my only illness of 2016 over with early.

Feel better Dosey. I am just now getting over a sinus infection, I started feeling cruddy the day after Christmas, but am on the mend. Take care of yourself ! Healing thoughts sent your way.

I'm getting ready to go to Costco. I've put it off long enough and really need some staples. I think I will go thru the pantry when I get back and toss all the snacks we accumulated over 2015. We received so many goodies during the holidays, it will last a while. No need to keep the old stuff.

I started up my 2016 pan that palette! It's so nice to have a fresh palette to use knowing that I mostly used up the last one.

I have a half bottle left of a micelar water that came in a set that I bought at the end of 2014. And two sets of Soap & Glory mini body wash & butter. Everything else is current, as in I bought it in 2015. During the sales, I stocked up on a face cleansing oil that is being discontinued & Rose Jam body wash from Lush during the BOGO, but only 6 months worth. Which will probably end up being more like 1 year's worth. I tend to underestimate the length of time it takes to use up products. So that's another lesson learned, buy less because it usually lasts longer than i think it will.

I switched my conditioner to a more "natural" one which I really don't like. I'm going back to my old conditioner when I finish the natural one. The only "natural" products that I have really liked are the DIY face oils & toner I whip up. As much as I want to be more green, the products don't perform the way I expect & it costs an arm & a leg. I just have to make my choices & prioritize. I think I wasted the most money trying to go green this year.

Well, that's enough procrastinating. Off to Costco. I hope it's a kinder & gentler Costco now that Christmas & New Year's is over.

I was going to go through the pantry today, but both trash bins are full, bc of all the other stuff I've gotten rid of! I'll probably do it Monday after work.
