I have had severe dry eyes for years. One of the worst cases my opthamologist has ever seen. There is no cure and eyemakeup can become a problem. I use punctum plugs in both of my eyes which are extremely beneficial. In addition my Dr. prescribed " AUTOGOLOUS EYE DROPS". You need a prescription for the drops and insurance doesn't pay for it. I spend $120 ever 6 weeks to have them made. These drops are made out of your blood at a compounding pharmacy. They come frozen in many different vials and you can use one vial for three days. After that it expires because it doesn't have any preservatives in it. I need them often so I carry a small cooler with me wherever I go and a note from my Dr. stating that I need them. I highly recommend these drops vs the over the counter because the eye drops made out of your own blood absorb better and help prevent corneal scarring. As far as makeup I use Urban decay potion primer on my eyelids, My makeup is a brand called COLORESCIENCE which holds up really well under watery eyes. I also use Chanel mascara primer and mascara. Just look up the brand called COLORESCIENCE and call them. I love the product. A little expensive but worth it. Hope this helps.

I have dry eyes and I have to apply drops frquently, so that can mess up my eye make up. Does anyone know of good waterproof concealer, mascara and eye shadow. I have tried using Tarte and Lancome concealers. i also am now using Armani and Lancome waterproof mascaras. Any suggestions? Also, does anyone know of a waterproof eye primer?

No, I don't. I hope you get some good suggestions. I am experiencing this myself. I just recently went to the eye dr. and was told my oil glands are plugged up. I have to get a prescription for some type of greasy gel to use at night and then use warm compresses as well. I have Blepharitis - maybe this is something you might want to look into. I am hoping that after I do all of this that it will help. I have been using drops constantly myself and it has been doing no good. The dr. said that the drops are usesless considering my glands are blocked at the present. Good luck!!!

Anyone undergoing the trials of dry eye has all my sympathy. I can recommend using a mascara topcoat (Clarins makes one, so does Anastasia) to at least keep mascara from running. Not sure about a waterproof primer; I'll see if I can find one.

However, to treat the problem at its source - please consider asking your eye care practitioner about punctal plugs. They won't work for everyone, but if your problem is that your natural tears aren't staying in your eyes, these can help. I had them inserted two years ago and it's been a real game changer for me. Well, that, and the fact that now special contacts just for dry eye are now available.

I thought I'd have to give up contacts and just go to glasses. These new lenses are incredible - never knew I could see so well or be so comfortable.

I also have dry mouth & dry nose. I just read that Vit D is related to dry eye. Get tested to make sure your levels are where they need to be. I gave up on trying to wear mascara & eyeliner when I was about 20.

gonnab, it sounds to me as if you may have dry eye as the symptoms you mentioned are the same as dry eye. I never knew what was causing my eyes to run until my Opthamologist told me it had it. I use Restassis and it works. Dry eye can cause damage to the cornea if it's not treated and regular eye drops only help in between Restasis drops. You may want to check with your doc.

When I had Lasik done, my doctor had me start taking flaxseed oil (Omega 3) to prevent dry eyes. He said in studies, it was as effective as Restasis. So far so good. I haven't had dry eyes yet.

I do try to waterproof my eye makeup as much as possible. 100% Pure has a good cream concealer that is supposed to be waterproof. I used up a whole one but haven't repurchased it because I was looking for something cheaper. I also use the bareMinerals Locked & Coated mascara topcoat over a regular drugstore mascara. It works really well and is affordable. My current eyeliner is Urban Decay 24/7 Liquid liner, which is waterproof. Their pencil version is waterproof too.

I'm so sorry about your eyes, but when my sisters eyes were tearing all the time the eye specialist she went to said that she had dry eyes. It's the body's way to try to adjust the dry eye and it produces extra tears to compensate. Only a eye doctor can tell you for sure if that's the case. I hope you feel better.

There are other treatments available. I go to a specialist to have treatments 2-3 Times a year and it has CHANGED MY LIFE! I am not exaggerating. It involves IPL treatments followed by expression of clogged meibomian glands. My Dr is Dr Rolando Toyas in Nashville Tennessee. He has traveled to many other clinics (including Mayo Clinic) to train other physicians across the country on the procedure. Check it out!

Thank all of you who replied. I started this mess after menopause and my opthalmalogist told me that I could have this problem due to hormone changes.I checked on the Internet and one thing that I read was that this comes with menopause. Can you believe that?

I use Refresh Celluvisc and Sytane drops. I have an appointment next week and I will see what she tells me. She said that my pores are fine, but I have to put warm compresses two times a day. We talked about Restasis and she stated that I was not there yet and it is very expensive. There is supposed to be a coupon program for it.

Makeup is a problem if I do not put the drops on just right. The Lancome and Armani mascaras are alright. But expensive. The problems is with concealers. I would not mind, but I have very dark undereye circles. I found one by Kevin Aucoin and it is thick, so a little goes a long way. It helps. Yet when I come home at night, it has faded b/c of the drops. The one by IT is useless. Laura Geller's undereye primer is fairly good.

I hope that I do not need surgery. This just started about 3 months ago.

I don't understand how you are messing up eye shadow and concealer with eye drops. If you only use one drop at a time and have a kleenex ready to blot the corner of your eye then this should not happen. Your eye can only hold one drop - no reason to use any more than that at a time.
