Retin-A Discount Programs

My 15-year old son was given a prescription from the derm today for Retin-A.05% Cream and was wondering if anyone knows of a discount card program for this medication. It is so expensive. Thank you!

Many people buy from Canadian Pharmacies when they don't have insurance coverage.

Yes, he does have insurance. I am going to fill it in the morning and I am praying that it is covered since it is for him. Thank you.

@LadyEagles It's very possible, even likely, that it's a covered prescription with your insurance plan, given your son's age. If not, check out the GoodRx site for a coupon that's usable in your area. I was able to find one to use as my local CVS and it brought the generic version (Tretinoin) down to a much more affordable price.

Just in case your derm didn't tell you or your son, ease into using the RetinA/Tretinoin very slowly. Too much, too fast and he will experience a lot of drying and flaking. Start out every three days for a couple of weeks, then every two days for a couple of weeks, adn then nightly. Only use it at night and wear a sunscreen everyday.

My new insurance company would not cover Retin-A because I was over 35. My previous insurance DID cover it. It is used for acne sometimes so it is probably covered for your son. Thanks to other posters, Iearned about GoodRx for discount coupons. When I need my next refill, since insurance won't cover, I will use the GoodRx.

Be sure your son wears sunscreen once he starts on the Rx.

If the doctor writes the Rx correctly- that it is to treat acne-then he will be covered. If it is not, fight it with the insurance company. There is no reason for them to deny it. Even adults over 35 can get it covered by their insurance company if they have a history of acne and have been treated for it prior to turning 35. It is all in the way the derm writes the Rx and if they are willing to help fight it with the insurance company if the insurance company denies it.

My sister recently tried to use a GoodRX coupon at a CVS and they wouldn't honor it. She asked them to call as the coupon suggests but they refused. I, on the other hand, got a $470 script for a dog for $60, at a Kroger owned grocery with a GoodRX coupon.

I use GoodRx all the time, mainly for my dogs' prescriptions, and have never had anyone refuse the coupon. My last dog Rx was normally $45 but I got it for $10 using GoodRx. It has saved me alot of money over the years.

Walgreens always honors the GoodRX coupons and most of the time they have the cheapest prices. I get my Retin-A for around $50.00 with the coupon and have gotten other prescriptions with the coupons as well.

@Drythe I don't know if you belong to Costco but if so, they have a new program for members that will save you even more money on Rxs costs for those not covered by insurance (like pet meds) and human Rxs that you may have a high co-pay for but you have to ask about it to sign up. I always compare Costco's price with that additional savings program with other places through GoodRx and whichever is the cheapest, I will use. It used to be Costco most of the time but it seems lately the GoodRx prices have been cheaper. Not sure why the change.
