Go a little lighter or darker with foundation?

I just can't seem to find a foundation that perfectly matches my skin. Is the general rule of thumb to go a shade a hint lighter or a hint darker if you can't find a perfect match? Thanks!

I go a bit darker, especially in the summer.

Im on the fair side of medium and if I go lighter, I look like Morticia Addams.

I also go lighter except for the summer months if I have a slight tan.

my solution to your make up problem is to go to Sephora and have them do a make upp match for you. It only takes a few minutes and you are set!

I was matched with Bobbi Brown "Sand"Color and it matches perfectly. So glad I did!

I think generally they'll tell you to go lighter, however that doesn't work for everybody...my face naturally is darker than my neck, due to freckling...I tried to go lighter and I looked sickly, going darker instantly brightened up my face...if need be, I lightly bring it down my neck...again, doesn't work for everyone, but you'll have to try different shades...good luck...foundation is the toughest makeup item to get right.

i go,lighter too. by the time i add my blush and illuminator i look good. btw i wear bb or cc creams not foundation.

also, if you go darker, you will have a demarcation line where you stop! yuck!

Foundation is one of those products that may look great under the fluorescent lights but then in daylight its a different story.

I finally went lighter with some of the liquid Lancome samples I was given and that looked the best in daylight for me.

I do go a shade or two darker in the summer due to tanning.

That's a great idea, Kookie! I get lazy about going to the mall so I order from Sephora all the time, but your idea is worth a trip to the mall. thanks

I have repeatedly read that it is best to go darker as going lighter tends to age us. I have read that on so many aa websites particularly, as well as hearing it from professional makeup artists.

Seems many here prefer going lighter but it doesn't work well for me.

Not if you blend it well into your jaw line with a brush. I go a bit darker sometimes and it never shows on the jaw line after blending. Also lighter can have as just much of a obvious line but since its light people don't always blend. I've noticed plenty of white faces with darker necks. it looks just as distracting IMO.

I have found two brands that match my fair skin perfect.

Jane Iredale powder foundation

Make-up Forever liquid foundation

I do think it is a good idea to go and check the colors in person.

If you can, go without make-up.

I would definitely go a little lighter. When I have foundation that is too dark, it looks like I have dirt on my face.

I wear a Medium in most foundations but it it's too light, I add a touch of bronzer and blend, blend, blend! Sometimes I buy 2 shades and blend them. In IT cosmetics I blend the CC cream in Medium with the Tan and that really works well for me.

I completely agree. That's why I've never had good luck getting foundation matched at the mall or Sephora's. Inevitably the foundation they've suggested looks too dark or orange when I get home and use it in daylight. Granted I have tricky skin to match - super fair with freckles and alot of redness. On me going too dark just looks odd.
