Question about red lipstick

This may be a silly question... but when you wear a red top (shirt, blouse, sweater, etc) should you wear red lipstick???

you can as long as it's in the same color family and it doesn't clash with what you are wearing.

You could wear red lipstick with a red top if you want, but I never do. I just don't like myself in red lipstick. It looks too vivid on me.

I would only wear red (same color family) or a brownish red or nude. I have a friend that wears the same pink lipstick every day and when she wears a red top it looks terrible IMO.

I agree, but it certainly can be a big rigmarole trying to find the right one. It's been a mission of my for months, looking for the right red to go with a Christmas top, not to mention the wasted $$ on shades that didn't work.

One other thing to mention...

If you're going to to a vibrant lip color, go with a simple, more pale, eye shadow.

The best RED lipstick I've ever found is DIOR 999. It's a true red, no blue or orange to it at all. Sometimes I smudge it a bit and put a sheer lip gloss over it. It's matte not shiny at all. Pricey though.

I am going to check this out!! I have forever been searching for a true "lipstick red" color. No orange , no blue . Thanks for posting !!

You don't need to spend a fortune for a good red lipstic. Check out Revlon's Super Lustrous Really Red, Red Lacquer and Fire and Ice. I love the Really Red shade.

I like Clinique Matte crimson--very pretty.

I , as another poster stated, like it when someone has on orange-red lipstick and a blue-red top. It looks just AWFUL. They have to match or the reds together should not be worn. I'd like to check out the DIOR 999, but I"m too cheap to pay Dior lipstick prices, LOL. Thanks for the idea though. I'd love a dupe for it.

I think if I'm wearing a red top, I'd probably shy away from trying to match my lipstick to it.

I'd say, whatever looks good on you. In theory, I love red lipstick, but it doesn't love me unless I tone it down.

I've discontinued wearing lipstick at all - tired of the whole thing.

The only should I follow in makeup is that my foundation should match my skin tone. Aside from that, it's about what I want, not what I should.

You don't have to. For me, it depends on the setting and the look I'm going for. If it's work then I would probably go for something softer, a nice nude (without being flat). Or even go for a lighter red gloss for a sheer look. For an evening out or dress up I would choose red. However, I would be most likely to choose one that stays on and then you put the clear gloss on top. I have one from MAC.

Not a silly question at all. Yes, you can wear red when you wear red lipstick. You don't have to match the reds either....lol If you wear red clothing, you are not required to wear red lipstick. I wear red lipstick a lot in the winter months because I tend to wear a lot of darker colors and red lipstick (and nail polish) gives me a nice pop of bright color.

Oh this brings back memories of my mom and my aunt! These two colors were their staples, and they're the first colors I remember being aware of in lipsticks. Of course back then they didn't have the selection we have today. My aunt stayed with these two her whole life; my mom experimented a little with Estee Lauder and Elizabeth Arden colors, but I never remember either one of them wearing any color but red on their lips!

OP - I wear a lot of (warm) red; it's one of the colors I look good in. Personally, I never wear a red lip if I'm already wearing a red top. I go with a lighter, more neutral color.

You could but it doesn't mean you should. It's up to you. If do choose to match your red clothing and lipstick, remember to stay in the same tone. If your top is a blue red, pink red, warm red, brown red then your lipstick should be in the same tone. One last thing to consider, warm reds will bring out the yellow in teeth and that could ruin the entire look so if teeth are yellow, might be better to skip a warm red.
