Lipstick Queen "Moment" in their Butterfly line. This line is sheer but still well-pigmented. "Moment" is a non-scary earthy red shade.

Bobbi Brown Carolina sheer lipstick. You can buy it at Nordstrom. I love it because it looks good when I'm wearing a red sweater and I'm pretty shy about wearing red lipstick.

Lipstick Queen Medieval, my go to, stashes of it in car, purse, make-up case, suitcase, computer case.

Have gifted to many, the color ALWAYS works. Wish it stayed on longer, but cest' la vie.

It just depends upon what the OP wants. Lipstick Queen's Medieval is described as a lip treatment. It's very, very sheer (but can be built up) and does not have the pigment of their other lines. And as others have noted, it has very little staying power.

Their Butterfly Ball line that I posted about earlier when I suggested a shade is also sheer, as the OP asked for, but the lipsticks are well-pigmented.

The sheer brick color I just started using is IT Cosmetics lipstick stain in the Pretty Woman color. It's not the longest lasting lipcolor I've ever used, but the color is pretty and not too intense. Plus, it leaves a little stain on your lips after most of it has worn off

Healthy Lips in Laura Mercier's sheer lip collection is quite lovely -- I own it; however, you may like Tender Lips which is a Brown Red. Laura's sheer collection is excellent color but just a sheer lipstick but lasts fairly long. Nordstrom also sells it if you want free shipping. Laura & Nordies both take returns. If you don't want to spend a lot of money, check out Burt's Bees lip shimmers.

Here is a classic brick red, sheer finish: Clinique's "Angel Red" you can get it at any major department store that carrys Clinique. It is exactly as you describe and buildable and super creamy. Check it out!

I disagree with this poster's opinion. It depends upon your skin tone and it is definitely a "brick" color on me and I can lighten or deepen the brick shade precisely because it is buildable. This is why this shade is so very classic and popular. You should give it a look.
