Coconut Oil - How do you use it?

I keep reading coconut oil is good for so many things on the face, body, hair. etc. But I am not sure how to use it, what kind to use, brand, etc.

I saw a small note in a magazine recently that talked about how coconut oil is great to purify the scalp and really makes the scalp and hair so much healthier. But it really did not go in any detail about how to use it -- such as how to apply, how often, what kind, etc. Anyone do this or know about it?

Also, what other ways do you use coconut oil and what brand, type, etc.?

I use coconut oil (no particular brand) to remove all my makeup, especially mascara. I take about a good teaspoon into my hand and rub it between my hands to liquify it (it's solid below 76 degrees) and then rub it onto my face. I do take a kleenex then to wipe it all off and then wash my face as usual with Cerave or Purity. I love it, but do not care for it in cooking!

I use coconut oil for eye make-up removal - I may try the previous posters method of entire make-up removal.

I also use it for moisturizer from head to toe. The coconut is absorbed into your skin (I do exfoliate everyday). If you use it for your hair - be sure to use sparingly. If fact use it sparingly all over.

I prefer the TJ Brand - virgin cold pressure coconut oil. It was very hard to find for several months so I always try to keep a back-up.

I do not use the product for cooking thought it is very good for you.

I melt it and use it on my hair, comb it thru and let it sit for a few hours while I do stuff around the house.

I use it on my body sometimes too

I use coconut oil as a deep conditioning hair masque once weekly to keep moisture in my thick, course hair which makes it more mananageable and healthy.

I use it to condition my hair every other week. Massage onto dry hair and leave on for however long you can, then shampoo twice. I add a tiny amount of any other oils I currently have like tea tree oil.

I also cook with it. I tried it in my coffee once in place of milk but didn't like it.

I use the Nutiva brand and buy it from Vitacost.

I also buy the Trader Joes brand. I primarily use on my heels and other rough feet spots, putting on socks afterwards, of course. Works great to soften rough skin. Elbows, too. I sometimes also use as a hair masque, as mentioned by another poster.

I got mine at Costco. I do put it in hot cereal when I make it. Have used it on veggies too.

I use it to soften elbows and did use it on dry legs, makes my skin look really good.

A relative who has psoriasis uses it all the time on his rough patches and he says it has helped tremendously. I too have psoriasis (in a current remission, hooray!) and will also try it that way if and when I have a break out!

I mainly use it for cooking/baking and sauteing. Also I put about 1/2 tablespoon in my hot cocao in the mornings. Have yet to use it on my face just because I have alot of skin care already. I buy it wherever I find it at a good price. It is organic and naturally refined . The brand I have now is from betterbody foods, 28oz for about $12 on sale at Fred Myers a few weeks ago.

I use it in baking in place of butter. After reading all these replies, I will definitely use it on my hair and to remove makeup.

I've been using coconut oil since I was a little kid as a deep conditioner for my hair (my mom used it on my hair).

For the past year or two now I've also been using it to remove any waterproof/tough eye makeup (normally my face wash removes all my makeup, including eye makeup, unless it is super waterproof makeup). Works great.I would not use it to remove all my face makeup though because it is comedogenic so if you are prone to breakouts, I would not suggest using it on your face.

I also use it to cook with but mainly use it in my coffee in place of cream.

My dogs get a tbs of it for the health benefits.

I've also been using it to do the oil pulling for cleaner, whiter teeth and keeping my gums healthy. I only do it for about 5 minutes though. That is about all I have time for. I have really good teeth to begin with but I feel like this will help keep them that way. I want to have all my teeth when I am 100 years old, lol!

The brand I've used for years and yeas (~14?) now is Nutiva Organic 100% pure, extra virgin, coldpressed- not deoderized, bleached or refined. Love it.

I dab a bit onto my hands..paying attention to the nails...after a month of doing this my nails look like a french manicure! I also use it as a pulling oil for my teeth and gums. This stuff has soo many uses. Just started to use it on my hair as a a mask...so for so good!

Awesome! I have to get me some!!!! I am partiularly impressed with your descriptions of how you use it for hair conditioning and your skin softening. I am a little afraid to try it on my face as I have Rosacea and I break out. It could be good for that, but right now I am in a good place there so don't want to rock the boat!

In any event, I am going to go on the hunt for some of the brands you have listed and try it. I really want to use it on my scap and hair especially.

And I think my nails and cuticles could really benefit from it!

Do you put some in a dish and then put water in another dish and let it melt? I read not to put it in the microwave. The issue I have is that it hardens a bit after I put it on my hair.

How are you ladies actually using it as a deep conditioner? I've been melting it in a dish of water, and then I put it on my hair for an hour or so and put a shower cap on it. I haven't seen too much improvement yet. How often do you all use it as a mask?

I've used coconut oil as a face moisturizer like in winter or if my face is very dry. I've used it on my heels & elbows at night. Also on the ends of my hair to avoid dry ends.

This is how one site clarifies the difference in c oils:

"RBD" refined, bleached, D (? Copra Derived?)

Expeller-pressed Coconut Oils: These are typically RBD coconut oils produced in tropical countries through mechanical “physical refining” from copra. Physical refining is considered “cleaner” than chemical refining that uses solvent extracts like “hexane”.

At our house we have organic expeller-pressed. Apparently this IS refined (as exposed to "virgin" but I'm not sure. I know I would not want "dirty" oil!

have used Kroger coconut oil on my lips; my face(not good for breakouts but nice for under-eyes) nails/hands/swish for mouth.

Coconut oil disappears into skin quickly. I would try to use olive oil, but that just seems too oily to me.
