Sweetbay: I haven't mastered using the glimmer products, personally. I would like to, but just haven't found one that is subtle enough for my own tastes. Just as we are told not to create 'raccoon eyes' by over-lining them, I notice that some people over-do the glimmer, & also the lighter-colored eye brighteners, having a type of reverse raccoon result--except that instead of dark circles being over-emphasized, it is the lighter color that is over-emphasized. There sure are a lot of do's & don'ts for women & our makeup, lol!

But to answer your Q, I don't think the glimmer type of product is the problem with the 1 beauty I've particularly noticed lately. It reminds me more of the Perricone-type of effect that we've seen on a few people that over-use the products, unintentionally crossing the line between properly moisturizing & unfortunately becoming too greasy, instead. I imagine it is a constant struggle, to get the dryness under control without feeling too dry, or not getting enough of the benefits of the products. There's that fine line again, this one being crossed in the hopes of moisturizing & combating wrinkles, and instead creating a new problem that is greasy-looking skin getting noticed, rather than one's youthful healthy skin. And I'm not criticizing here, I'm acknowleging a dilemma 'do & don't' that is a challenge for most of us to get right. Please, don't anyone think I'm singling you out, because I'm not. I'm using an example that I think will convey what I'm trying to explain, not intending to be judgemental or rude.

I grew up in an era where it was taboo to have an oily-looking complexion. We powdered our noses, we blotted like crazy, and we bought tons of matte-finish makeup. I just can't get used to all these 'dewy' complexions I'm seeing on hosts & models etc., and it is like watching a train wreck that I can't look away from..."Maybe she'll blot that ick on a commercial break...." Nope. Still slimy-looking.

Am I the only one that goes a little nuts over this trend? Eww. I know dry skin doesn't look good either, but a wet-looking face is just not very attractive. It looks like someone just stepped out of a sauna or ran a marathon. MInd you, the women who are doing the dew are beautiful by their own merit, I just think this wet-look detracts from their beauty. I guess I'm getting too old for new trends, 'eh? lol

I am trying to adjust from using the Bare minerals powder ( I like the color, hate the mess) to the Bare Essentuals liquid, and I am having a hard time. I feel like all my makeup ( lip liner eyeliner) wants to and does slide. What I think I want is a tinted moisturizer- I am looking at the Dr Denese brand- spendy, but my tinted moisurizer that I loved from Principle Secret was discontinued- can't even find it on EBAY. To answer Serenity's question- it's Oily when all your makeup slides, even after you put a setting powder on top.

I haven't noticed any hosts that look like "train wrecks" due to being "greasy" or "slimy looking." I also would not choose to describe a hosts appearance as "slimy." I would think that from time to time the hosts get hot due to being under lights. Those that I have seen (male and female) with oily skin is due to nature, not due to their makeup. In fact, I don't know anyone past their 20s who has (obviously) oily looking skin, but that is probably because they have learned how to take care of it by their 30s.

I gave up putting powder on my face in my early 20s, and have no desire to go back. On the other hand, I have no desire to police those who wear powder and am not disturbed by their appearance because they have different makeup choices.

I use serums and moisterizers, so my goal is not dry looking skin. For me it's not a fad. The only time I have a problem with my face looking wet is when I'm sweating (usually due to being dressed in a suit in 90+ degree humid weather or when I'm having a hot flash, neither or which is helped - for me - by putting powder on my face.)

SerenityNowMyndi, I am so glad you were brave enough to post this observation. I agree . When I see this oil slick look during makeup presentations I always think "Are you really going to leave her looking like that?"

Dr Denese promises us every presentation that Hydroshield will not leave us with that (greasy/slimy ) look, She always advises her customers to wait five minutes until the shine goes away. So we aren't the only ones who think that finish unfinished. It makes me think dirty, unkempt probably, as you expressed, because of successful indoctrination as a young woman learning how to present myself .

Sometimes very dark skin shines brilliantly on its own and that shine was the fodder for many jokes and ridicule. So- it seems odd that people are seeking out this very sheen and paying for it. But - To each her own Right? Meanwhile I'm placing another order for Urban Decay Naked Face Powder, guaranteed to take down the shine, keep the oil at bay and some ByeBye Pores.

Seems you've picked up a predator, sorry. The best advice I've read is to ignore them just like you would any playground bully, but it's hard to refrain from a retort for the ill intentioned soul.

I, also, have not noticed anyone's makeup looking "slimmy". I am also glad the days of coating your face with matte makeup so you look like you are wearing makeup. Then when you put the pressed powder over it stuck to any wrinkle you might have or if you smiled too much it creased and when you sweat you had no makeup on parts of your face - just the powder you kept putting on to try to keep the heavy matte makeup from coming off or you carried a bottle of foundation with you to apply several times daily. If you didn't powder often then you had a heavy greasy makeup not all everywhere look which was not attractive at all. Nope I love the lighter foundations that have actual skincare in and have the effect of no makeup at all. I love never having to reapply or touchup my makeup anymore either!

I don't know that I have noticed greasy looks from the hosts, but I really hate the terminology some hosts and guests use. I don't want to look dewy (mainly from have severely oily skin most my life), juicy, plump or like butter. There are a ton more that grate on my nerves and turn me off from wanting to purchase them. Seems like there are a lot of food comparisons. I don't get the logical connection there, but it might just be me.

There's a HUGE difference between "oily" and glowing or having just a bit of gleam (not shine) to your skin.

Healthy skin is not matte or dry- looking, which only makes you look older anyway.

Plus this is 2015, and change in general is (usually) good.

So is stepping outside of your comfort zone, and staying up-to-date and relevant.

I'm sure you can find a happy medium, Serenity; you're never too old for learning and growing. 8)

I don't watch much of the beauty shows any more so I haven't seen this.

I personally struggle with trying to find the right balance between flat and dry looking and too shiny looking.

I want my skin to look healthy and finished and not too shiny. It seems if a put on a foundation or BB Cream or whatever, then my face looks too shiny without any powder.

Plus, as others have posted, it rubs off. I need to use some kind of powder but I don't want a heavy, dry, dull, dated look. It's hard to find something in between, at least for me. And when you're older, if you don't watch, everything accentuates all the fine lines.

Thank you, CoG & others who understood where I was coming from, and what I was trying to say. I deliberately did *not* give any specific hosts or models' names, because I do not want to single anyone out, or seem rude & unkind. Since this is a QVC forum, it made sense to use that group as an example; when I really meant to convey anyone wearing make-up in all walks of life, not just those on tv.

In ref to my OP, I said it was like 'watching a train wreck', not that any particular person was a personal train wreck, so I feel badly if that is the impression I unintentionally gave. I was referring to a disastrous make-up Fail that I wish for their sake would stop happening, since this oil-slick-look certainly cannot be intended. The person who comes to mind as the one I notice most often has never appeared this way until recently, so I'm guessing it must be a new product that's being used. I imagine it looks much different in the mirror while applying makeup, than it appears under hot & bright camera/studio lights-similar to us applying makeup in the subdued lighting of our homes, then going out in the sun or office lights, & having it appear differently than we intended.

As I mentioned already, these women are beautiful, but this new technique they are using is with a heavy hand, causing the residue on their faces to get all the attention, rather than their own beauty. I just want to reach through the tv & blot their faces for them, lol! I liken it to seeing spinach in someone's teeth, or needing their noses wiped. I want to look away, or walk away. So my point is, that can't be their goal, to make people react this way.

I agree with the person who posted about there being a fine line between glowing, healthy-looking skin, and greasy or shiny wet-looks, like butter is smeared all over the face. I'm referring to extremes here, such as oil-slicks or sahara-desert-dry looks, which I don't think is great, either. Not *delicately* dewy, fresh-looking beautiful skin. The picture that Iwantcoffee posted (thank you!) is spot-on for the type of skin appearance I think most of us are going for, in our makeup applications. Some of us have to blot oily areas with absorbing powder, some of us need to apply tons of moisturizers to combat dryness, and some of us have to do both with our combo skin issues.

I've always heard that we want to notice healthy, beautiful skin, not a person's makeup. Healthy skin is not dry, flaky or calloused; nor is it an oil slick. Finding that fine line is often tricky.

Thank you for all the kind replies, much appreciated! It's nice to know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

AngelPuppy:

I have the same issue, since I have combo skin. The skin around my temples gets dried-out & tends to want to flake, while the skin right under my eyes on my cheeks gets oily, along with my chin & a tiny area above my eyebrows. I don't use powder much anymore, but when I do, I like:

Clinique's Almost Powder:

http://www.qvc.com/Clinique-Almost-Powder-Makeup.product.A178629.html?sc=A178629-SRCH&cm_sp=VIEWPOSITION-_-46-_-A178629&catentryImage=http://images.qvc.com/is/image/a/29/a178629.001?$uslarge$

I find that it 'finishes' or sets my makeup and doesn't over-dry, giving the right appearance of semi-matte that I'm looking to achieve.

Does anyone else remember when Clinique was one of the original makeup lines that QVC used to offer? I miss seeing that line presented, they have some terrific products. I would dearly love to see more products offered during their tv presentations, offering more variety & less repetitions. I'd tune in so much more often. Hmm, maybe that's better for my wallet, that they don't do this!

I am probably going to try this one, which I just came across online:

Dr. Denese Hydroshield Treatment Powder:

http://www.qvc.com/Dr.-Denese-HydroShield-Treatment-Powder.product.A170859.html?sc=A170859-SRCH&cm_sp=VIEWPOSITION-_-52-_-A170859&catentryImage=http://images.qvc.com/is/image/a/59/a170859.001?$uslarge$

Has anyone else tried that one? What works best for people with similar combo skin issues?

There is definitely a fine line, lol!

I prefer a more satin, dewy look but yes, some foundatios and some luminizers/highlighters can make you look truly greasy. A matte look is more flat and doesn't look like normal skin, imo. Normal, healthy skin has a bit of dimension to it and is more plump/juicy looking (hate that word but can't think of another offhand to describe it)- our skin doesn't normally look matte.

IMO, there's a difference between having a dewy look (which I prefer) and being dewy. Someone posted that they would hate to be hugged by a dewy face.....a dewy face to me implies it is wet. To me that is a sweaty face.

A dewy look is not wet.

I'm 62 years old and have always preferred a dewy look on me, since I was in my 20's. I have always had dry skin and the dewy look is much more attractive on ME.

Personally, I don't like a matte finish.....you have to have flawless skin to get away with that look.

JMHO

CoG: a special "Thank You!" for your posts. I had to smile at your comment, "Are you really going to leave her looking like that?" because I've often thought the same thing. Glad I'm not the only one!

Good point about Dr. Denese advising to let the hydroshield dry, to avoid the greasy look. I've heard her say that, too.

Thanks for the tip on the Urban Decay Naked Face Powder...I've got to try that soon!

I never really thought about it before, but it makes sense that very dark skin would reflect light & therefore appear more shiny. I assume that is nature's way of adding melanin to the skin tint/tone & making it less likely to absorb the harmful sun rays that would cause skin cancer, in races that originated closer to the equator. That also explains why black skin doesn't age as quickly as white skin; they are able to avoid harmful rays better than other races without the darker pigmentation. I wonder why some Asian races have a yellow tint to their skin--anyone know what that would be preventing or helping? Since a yellow tint is given to sunglasses to prevent glare, I'm thinking it must have to do with the type of sunlight they have in those particular parts of the world, where their race originated. Instead of some people judging others on their skin color, I wish they would realize it is simply nature's brilliant way of protecting the biggest organ the human body needs to be healthy---skin.

This is an interesting article on skin color & tanning, for those interested:

http://www.webexhibits.org/causesofcolor/7F.html

It is on a website called, "Causes of Color" and has some pretty interesting & fascinating facts about color, from the color of human skin, animals, and how we see color.

Got off track a little bit there, but thought I'd share a fun link.
