Downy has changed their April Fresh scent

I just bought a new box of Downy April Fresh dryer sheets - they have changed the scent - it is HORRIBLE now. It smells nothing like downy used to smell like. It is very overpowering and just has an awful smell. You may want to give it a smell in the grocery store before buying if you have been a long time user of downy.

I thought maybe i had gotten a "bad batch" so i went to the Downy website - nope - every review of the dryer sheets is saying the same thing - they changed our beloved downy into something unusable.

I would like to encourage any long time downy users to call the company and complain.

Don't use dryer sheets although my family likes them. But I do have one observation to add, have you ever noticed that some use so much fabric softener in their clothes that you can smell it when they walk by or even after they have left the room. I noticed some at work do this. Not sure why they like that. The scents are generally not unpleasant but just so strong and no perfumerier has ever bottled that.

I used to be a Downy user. Then I realized I was just adding more chemicals to my families lives.

Unnecessary if you ask me. So I stopped and guess what, clothes are still soft. Blacks stay midnight black.

And it doesn't pollute the water when it goes down the drain.

I gag now when I'm out walking and you can smell someone's awful stinky fabric softener in the air. Takes the delightfulness out of enjoying the sea air.

I called P&G about the Tide Free & Clear giving my clothes a wierd smell (like mildew smell) -- they asked me for the container ID & save the bottle. they had changed the formulation. (I changed from the regular scented Tide because the scents were overpowering and I couldn't stand wearing my own clothes!!!). That was weeks ago and I haven't heard a thing -- I rectified it myself tossed it & changed to All Free & Clear ... No smell anymore in my clothes! Good luck contacting them for change.

I agree with you, Dawn, but it is in regard to their liquid.

We will usually buy whatever brand we like that is on sale.

This last time, my husband picked up a bottle of Downy, because it was on sale, and used it, and I asked him what that "horrible smell was," after he did laundry with it, and he said that it was the new bottle of the Downy.

I was like, "What did they do to it, to change it from that pretty scent that it used to have, that we were all familiar with?!"

I don't use Downy, but I didn't care for the perfume like scent. I use Mrs Meyers Lemon Verbena. Has a slight real lemon scent. But it doesn't really perfume the clothes up/

However, our cleaners changed scents and formulation because of new laws and standards in CA. OMG, I took in my good Down comforter and when I got it back, the smell was so bad. Cost 50 dollars too! Smelled like a toss between stacks of old newspaper and a nauseating sickly scent. Reminded me of the old air wick deodorizers they used to use in gas station bathrooms years ago! I put the comforter every day on the line to air for 2 weeks. I had to put it in a trash bag in between airings, because the scent was so over whelming the room smelled. Took it back to cleaners, he opened the bag, and backed away. Said to give him 3 weeks. I came back to get it, he said " I am sorry, I failed". He had called chemical company, followed their plan. Still smelled, and he agreed it was not good. I have been with him for 28 years. . He paid me for the comforter, and kept it.. He said the newer chemicals and scents can react with some fabrics. P U Marta, I am afraid to go back.

I used to use tide with downy April fresh and they did change the sent it is disgusting. So I only use the dryer sheets now but if they change the scent of the dryer sheets now I will be switching as well. thanks for the info

Yes, reviews on Downy's own site are all one-star. Funny when a manufacturer allows reviews on its own site and they're overwhelmingly negative. Doesn't make one want to run out and buy some.

That's really a shame - I loved the April Fresh scent. I only use the dryer sheets on bed clothes, rugs, etc. - I use the liquid on clothes. When I use the dryer sheets tho I cut them in quarters - a box lasts me forever - you still get the softness but the scent isn't as strong. Re the liquid I use a quarter capful per my washer instructions and add water to the fill line of the dispenser. Why do companies change things that are popular?!

I won't use fabric sheets in my dryers. I've had two new dryers in the past 18 years and upon reading all the info that comes with a new appliance both have stated that if I use dryer sheets my warranty is voided. I've always used liquid fabric softener and am as happy as a clam.

I agree, dryer sheets kill the dryer. Find something else, there are tons of things on the market to use as softener for your clothes. Smell them in the store and pick one if the Downy doesn't do it for you. Get off the sheets.

I had heard or read that dryer sheets create a coating on your filter that eventually even fills in all the little openings the air passes through thus your dryer doesn't work as efficiently. You can't see it unless you hold the filter up to a light so I did and sure enough I saw it. Now I pull out the filter about once a month and go over the whole thing with warm water that has a little dishwashing liquid in it and a soft brush then a good rinsing.

I rarely use dryer sheets, I can not tolerate the scent, my nose is so sensitive I can smell dryer sheets on a towel when it is being used by some one else

Wht do you do about static cling?

I wondered the same thing. Maybe there's a home remedy for that?
