shiloh 81, I've tried it and love it. This is my favorite serum ever. It's very light weight and sinks in almost immediately when you apply it. I use the Moisture Boost moisturizer over it for extra moisture because my skin is dry.

I have been using it for a few years. My skin is combo with a very oily T zone. I find it to be non-irritating and very light so it works well under make-up. I only wear it in the morning. At night, I alternate between her Resist serum in silver packaging and her 1% retinol. I also use her 2% BHA, Vitamin C and Skin Recovery moisturizer. The dry parts of my skin are very sensitive and this regimen works well for me. If you're not sure about any of her products, call customer service and they usually send out free samples. Their CS is second to none. Good luck!

I really wish she was not so incredibly fond of silicones. Six out of the first eight ingredients in this serum are silicones. My skin, though not normally sensitive, does not like silicones. Too bad because there are some other great ingredients.

If you have issues with silicones better check the ingredients list as this product has them in it. Just an FYI as I am one whose skin cannot tolerate silicones.

I personally, with extremely sensitive skin, have never had a problem with this ingredient; in fact, I think they are gentle and beneficial for my skin. Keep in mind that that it is physically impossible for silicones to clog your pores or "suffocate" them, as is often stated.

While some may have an adverse reaction, I think that the most common complaint stems from the feel of silicones. Again, I personally love that smooth feel.

I use it often but at max 2% and can really notice the slip at .5%. This serum must not feel much less slippery than her other antioxidant Resist serum. What exactly about it is light? Oh, and thanks for pointing that out.

I know that you are sensitive to them, but my skin seems to really like them.

They offer some barrier protection and nice skin feel but, to my understanding, that's about it. There may be some that offer a beneficial delivery system but I don't know of them. Any that I've run across do not offer anything active or nutritive to your skin. There is nothing wrong with them. My skin happens to not react well. I've read that others have some sensitivities to them as well. I like PC products so I wish she'd produce an antioxidant serum either without them or significantly less of them. I'm envious that your skin is being nicer to you!

Am I counting wrong or missing another name for silicone?

Water, Cyclopentasiloxane (silicone slip agent), Butylene Glycol (slip/water-binding agent), Glycerin (skin-repairing ingredient), Dimethicone (silicone slip agent), Polysorbate 20 (emulsifier), Polysilicone-11 (film-forming agent), Lauryl PEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone (silicone polymer), Hyaluronic Acid (skin-repairing ingredient), Resveratrol (antioxidant), Niacinamide (cell-communicating ingredient), Quercetin (antioxidant), Adenosine (cell-communicating ingredient), Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (vitamin C/antioxidant), Tocopherol (vitamin E/antioxidant), Phospholipids (skin-repairing ingredient), Ubiquinone, Epigallocatechin Gallate (antioxidants), Sea Whip Extract, Bisabolol, Beta Glucan (anti-irritants), Phytic Acid (chelating agent), Xanthan Gum (thickener), Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer (film-forming agent), Sodium Hydroxide (stabilizer), Disodium EDTA (chelating agent), Phenoxyethanol (preservative), Ethylhexylglycerin (skin-conditioning agent).

Nope, you're right. Seems I can't count that late at night! Still 4 out of 8 is cone overload, IMO. I actually like the ingredient after water, Cyclopentasiloxane, a lot in body lotions/butters. I use it often but at max 2% and can really notice the slip at .5%. This serum must not feel much less slippery than her other antioxidant Resist serum. What exactly about it is light? Oh, and thanks for pointing that out.

This one is water-based.

Crisso, there are many benefits to silicones in skin care and cosmetics. BC and I are best buds, so we can disagree here. She is a peach.

When you do research, you'll see that "natural" sites tend to hate silicones. They claim all sorts of things about this ingredient that are simply not factual. Aside from the fact that it rates a big zero on the comedogenic scale, I'll give you some more detailed info:

The first is from truthinaging:

Functions of Dimethicone:

One of the most widely used ingredients in cosmetics, dimethicone works as an anti-foaming agent, skin protectant and skin & hair conditioner- it prevents water loss by forming a hydrating barrier on the skin. Like most silicones, this ingredient has a unique fluidity that makes it easily spreadable. When applied to the skin, its known for creating a subtle gloss that feels smooth and silky to touch. It also acts a mild water repellent by forming a protective barrier on the skin, and can fill in fine lines/wrinkles on the face, giving it a temporary “plump” look.

Dimethicone is believed to perform a variety of useful functions, and many studies have been conducted to confirm these beliefs. In a Skin Research and Technology study, the ingredient was found to soothe and protect the skin of individuals suffering from sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) induced irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), and even prevented the formation of ICD in some cases. Further tests have gone on to demonstrate dimethicone's effectiveness in treating contact hand dermatitis, and suggest that the protective barrier, which the ingredient forms on the epidermis, can effectively prevent skin infections. In addition, it works to reduce redness caused by rosacea and can function as an anti-inflammatory. For this reason, it is often used in conjunction with more irritating ingredients, particularly UV absorbers like titanium oxide and zinc oxide.

Most of all, the cosmetic industry values this ingredient for its powerful ability to keep the skin adequately lubricated, even during the driest and harshest winter weather. As a non-comedogenic ingredient, it provides a significant amount of emollience and coverage to the skin, without adding any heaviness. This, coupled with the fact that it can enhance the light refractability of other ingredients, makes it an excellent candidate for both color and sunscreen cosmetics. You can find dimethicone in practically every personal care product out there (especially skin care related ones), including facial moisturizer, body lotion, sunscreen, anti-aging serum, eye cream, foundation, facial powder, eye shadow, conditioner and hair dye.

Safety Measures/Side Effects of Dimethicone:

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its use as a "skin protectant" ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) drug products. Furthermore, the Cosmetic Ingredient review (CIR) Expert Panel reviewed the data surrounding dimethicone, and assessed it as safe to use in personal care products. They determined that because of the large molecular weight of silicone based polymers such as dimethicone, it would be very unlikely for it to penetrate past the surface of the skin.

The second is from Beautypedia:

Silicone in skin care

Substance derived from silica (sand is a silica). The unique fluid properties of silicone give it a great deal of slip, and in its various forms it can feel like silk on the skin, impart emolliency, and be a water-binding agent that holds up well, even when skin becomes wet. In other forms, it is also used extensively for wound healing and for improving the appearance of scars (Source: Journal of Wound Care, July 2000, pages 319–324).

There are numerous forms of silicones used in cosmetic products, particularly leave-on skin-care products and all manner of hair-care products. Perhaps the most common forms of silicone are cyclopentasiloxane and cyclohexasiloxane. Other forms include various types of dimethicone and phenyl trimethicone.

Silicone and acne

Claims that silicones in any form cause or worsen acne have not been substantiated in published research, nor have reports that silicones are irritating or "suffocate" skin. Almost all of these claims are either myths or based on anecdotal evidence, which isn't the best way to determine the safety or efficacy of any cosmetic ingredient.

Does silicone suffocate skin?

How do we know that silicones don’t suffocate skin? Because of their molecular properties they are at the same time porous and resistant to air. Think of silicones in a skin-care formula like the covering of a tea bag. When you steep the tea bag in water the tea and all of its antioxidant properties are released. Silicones remain on the surface of your skin and the other ingredients it is mixed with "steep" through. All ingredients have to be suspended in some base formula. Some of those ingredients remain on the surface some absorb. Either way the "actives" get through. Think of how many topical medications are suspended in petrolatum or mineral oil and those active ingredients absolutely get through and petrolatum is far more effective at preventing moisture loss than silicones are. Silicones have been used in burn units for years because of their unique healing, protecting, and breathable properties.

Moreover, the molecular structure of commonly used silicones makes it impossible for them to suffocate skin. The unique molecular structure of silicones (larger molecules with wider spaces between each molecule) allow them to form a breathable barrier and also explains why silicones rarely feel heavy or occlusive, although they offer protection against moisture loss (Source: The Chemistry and Manufacture of Cosmetics, Volume 3, Book 2, Allured Publishing Corporation, 2002, pages 833-839).

Does silicone clog pores?

Interestingly, silicone has been shown to be helpful for offsetting dryness and flaking from common anti-acne active ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and topical antibiotics (Source: Cutis, October 2008, pages 281-284). Also, silicone fillers are sometimes used for improving the appearance of acne scars. That certainly wouldn't be the case if silicone was a pore-clogging ingredient (Source: Dermatology Research and Practice, October 2010, Epublication).

Perhaps the most telling reason why silicones do not clog pores and cause acne (or blackheads) is because, from a chemistry standpoint, most silicones are volatile substances. That means their initially viscous (thick) texture evaporates quickly and does not penetrate the pore lining where acne is formed. Instead, they help ensure an even application of other ingredients and leave behind a silky, almost imperceptible feel that noticeably enhances skin's texture and appearance. You can think of this as a breathable barrier that protects skin while barely being felt.

And finally, this is from Jane Iredale, who has a very popular, high-end line of skincare and makeup targeting those who prefer a more "natural" approach:

Made from sand (silica) that is a combination of minerals but largely comprised of quartz. This state-of-the-art ingredient replaces the need for oils and is the coating on our micronized titanium dioxide. Dimethicone aids spreading, is transfer resistant and imparts a remarkable smoothness and creaminess to the overall product. It also improves coverage without adding heaviness. And, it is non-comedogenic and highly water repellent. It gives micronized titanium dioxide the highest light refractive ability of any titanium. This outstanding ingredient is one of the driving forces behind the creative evolution of color cosmetics.

In a recent medical article titled "Effective Sunscreen Ingredients and Cutaneous Irritation in Patients with Rosacea," Dr. Nichols and colleagues found that the addition of silicon-based protectants (dimethicone and cyclomethicone) into sunscreens greatly reduced facial irritation that rosacea sufferers experienced to these products. The physicians performed this study because in their medical experience patients with rosacea are particularly susceptible to irritation caused by sunscreen ingredients.

The results of the study demonstrate that in addition to their protective actions, dimethicone and cyclomethicone were found to have excellent moisturizing actions."

Crisso, there are other sources, but I'm exhausted now.
