On 5/19/2015 Feldspar said:
On 5/19/2015 Feldspar said:
On 3/10/2015 product tester said:
Ok, I just replied about my Wen experience a couple days ago. I just saw a news report about a very popular preservative called methylchloroisothiazolinone and other iazolinones causing a lot of allergies in people lately. The symptoms are similar to eczema, ie skin irritations, redness, peeling, etc. These preservatives are the last two ingredients in all Wen conditioning cleansers. I have a feeling this is the cause of hair loss in some people using it. I personally don't feel this is a big problem for me so I will continue to use Wen, but it certainly is something to think about. These chemicals can be found in a million products, like baby wipes, hand soaps, shampoos, etc. It might pay to read labels!

Or NOT pay...considering the original topic! ha ha

Don't you think maybe the ambulance-chasing law firm is widely publicizing this supposed "case" in order to attract additional litigants? Out of the millions of people who have used Wen for many years, there are six people attempting to get "class action" compensation. A higher percentage of people have problems with drinking water.

If there is a "known manufacturing defect" why haven't they provided it as "proof"? The lawsuit is directed at Guthy-Renker, but if there really is some weird "defect", wouldn't Guthy-Renker then sue the product formulators from which they licensed the products?

Methylchloroisothiazolinone - this is one of the preservatives used instead of Parabens, because conspiracy theorists made everyone terrified of parabens. Methylchloroisothiazolinone causes way more allergic reactions and irritations, but...it's not a paraben!

No matter - it NOT in Wen cleansing conditioners anyways.

Water, Glycerin, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Prunus Serotina (Wild Cherry) Bark Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Vegetable Oil (Olus Oil), Panthenol, Butylene Glycol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Polysorbate 60, PEG-60 Almond Glycerides, Amodimethicone, Citric Acid, Menthol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Fragrance, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool, Geraniol, Benzyl Benzoate, Hydroxycitronellal, Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde.

I don't know where you got that ingredient list or what formula it is for but most of WEN CC DOES contain Methylchloroisothiazolinone.

I have been an avid user of WEN for quite sometime now and I have app 10 bald spots on my scalp. I have been getting injections into the scalp to see if it will help. I am not sure that it's the WEN, it actually didn't occur to me till someone mentioned it to me today, I'm trying to get anyone's opinion to see if this has happened to them. As I said I love wen holding my color and the scents, just wondered if I am alone here.

Not looking for rude comments just anyone else who might be running into this.

What does your doctor think? I assume you guys discussed your hair care routine before beginning something as serious as scalp injections. That sounds pretty painful by the way. Do you mind me asking what is in the injection?

And to answer your question, I've used WEN for many years and my hair is pretty thick (no bald spots).

Yes, I have an aunt with alopecia. Nothing has helped, WEN included. Of course, it could be anything, even an allergy to an ingredient, but with big patches, it doesn't sound like it would be caused by a shampoo or a cleansing conditioner. Best of luck with your situation.

I really doubt WEN causes baldness, but I do know from my own experience using the product I have much more hair in the tub then when I use say Nick Chavez or Tweak-d. That being said, I still use WEN off and on and my hair is not thinning, but I would not use it exclusively .

People can have drastic negative results to any product, just as others may have very positive results to the same product. No one product is going to work for every person. If I were you, I'd take the list of ingredients to your doctor, have him review them. In the mean time, you might consider going back to the last product you used with good results. Also, don't take medical advice from ANYONE on ANY public forum. That's just not smart! Good luck!

I am assuming that before any doctor started giving you injections in your scalp they analyzed what the cause of the bald spots were? certainly they didn't start the injections without first determining the cause. What did the doctor say was causing the problem?

spotty or patchy hair loss is Alopecia - my daughter has this and went from being spotty (Alopecia Areata) at age 5 to going completely bald (Alopecia Universallis) at age 6 when she lost all body hair - she's 11 now and does have patchy hair over her head, arms and legs, but still doesn't have any eyebrows or lashes. She uses the Tea Tree cleanser - she has had more growth once she started using the WEN than before she started. Only your Dr. can tell you for sure. If you are really worried about it take a list of the ingredients for him/her to look at. Alopecia, being an autoimmune disorder has many different triggers...thousands actually and no one can know for sure what the triggers are, but if you have a wheat or soy allergy or are sensitive to them you would want to avoid using the WEN products that contain wheat and or the soy. WEN does have a rice based formula...have you tried using that or the tea tree? No matter what the cause, no one can say for sure it's WEN. Definitely check with your Dr. though.

If you think your hair is getting thinner when using WEN then chances are it is. Why stress over it - just toss it all like I did. I went back to my Aveda and the thinning has stopped as of now. Time will tell. Not every product works for everyone.

Q: How much hair loss is normal? A: “Hair loss in women is, to a certain extent, normal,” says New York-based leading hair restoration specialist Dr. James C. Marotta. “The average woman loses between 50 and 100 strands of hair per day, even up to 150 in some cases.” So don’t let those stray hairs in the shower drain scare you. “If you are nervous that you are losing an excessive amount of hair per day, you can try this trick: Take about 60 hairs between your fingers and pull, running your fingers through your hair. Usually between 5 and 8 hairs will come out—this is normal. An excess of 15 hairs, however, is not as common and means you are losing more hair than you should be. “For most, 90 percent of the hair on your head is in the growing phase, while about 10 percent of your hair is in the ‘resting’ phase, meaning that 10 percent will fall out and leave room for new hair growth within a certain period of time. If you are losing more than 15 hairs per pull, it likely means more than 10 percent of the hair on your head is in the ‘resting’ phase. While this still may not be a true cause for concern, it would be a good idea to ask an expert about what to do to halt this process. “The cause of excessive hair loss can be as simple as too much stress or a lack of vitamins, so it is important to take a look at your lifestyle when hair loss becomes an issue. However, hair loss can also become prevalent due to hormonal, immunological, and infectious issues, so it is important to see a doctor for treatment in these cases.”
