Up to 62% of a single percutaneous dose was bound to the site of application 24 hours after exposure. The MI/MCI-CG bound to the skin had a 13.1-day half-life.

MI/MCI was moderately to highly toxic to rats, and highly toxic to rabbits when administered orally, and moderately toxic when applied dermally. MI/MCI was not a cumulative ocular irritant when tested at 55 ppm. The dermal irritation of MI/MCI was concentration dependent but nonirritating to rabbit skin at 560 ppm concentrations; this nonirritating concentration is well above the maximum recommended use concentration.

No treatment-related effects were observed in rats which received MI/MCI in oral doses up to 24.4 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks. Doses of MI/MCI up to 2.8 mg/kg/day applied dermally to rabbits, 5 days per week for 3 weeks, produced moderate irritation at the application site but no systemic toxicity. Dermal application of MI/MCI at doses up to 0.4 mg/kg/day for 3 months produced no systemic toxicity in rabbits. No toxicologically significant treatment-related effects were observed in rats or dogs at doses up to 30 and 28 mg/kg/day, respectively. The result of genotoxic testing of MI/MCI varied with the assay used. Dermal application of 400 ppm MI/MCI-CG, 3 times per week for 30 months, had no local or systemic tumorigenic effect in male mice.

MI/MCI administered by gavage to pregnant rabbits and rats at doses up to 13.3 mg/kg/day was toxic to the dam, embryo, and fetus; the compound was not teratogenic.

MI/MCI is a sensitizer however, the concentration of MI/MCI in cosmetic products which produced sensitization varies. The available human sensitization test data at concentrations of 50 ppm and above are not in agreement. MI/MCI-CG was not a sensitizer or photosensitizer at a concentration of 15 ppm.

It is concluded that Methylisothiazolinone/Methylchloroisothiazolinone may be safely used in “rinse-off” products at a concentration not to exceed 15 ppm and in “leave-on” cosmetic products at a concentration not to exceed 7.5 ppm. The stated safe use concentration refers to a mixture containing 23.3% Methylisothiazolinone and 76.7% Methylchloroisothiazolinone.

http://orgs.dermis.net/content/e05eecdrg/e05news/e686/e706/index_ger.html

"Methylchloroisothiazolinone (and) methylisothiazolinone

(MCl/MI ; Kathon CG, Euxyl K100)

The isothiazolinones are, perhaps the most potent allergens on the consumer market. They are very effective preservatives. However, under suitable dilution and exposure conditions, even the most potent allergen can be used safely.

The commercial product (Kathon CG) contains only 1.5% of the active ingredients (the ratio of which is 3:1) with the remainder being water and magnesium salts that stabilise the system. Methylchloroisothiazolinone is the more potent allergen of the active components.

The patch test concentration of the actives is 100ppm in water.

The preservative was responsible for an epidemic of contact sensitivity, in some geographical areas, in the 1980s and early 1990s. Problems occurred mostly when the preservative was used in leave-on products at concentrations higher than 15ppm. It is now mainly used in rinse-off products at lower levels (up to 15ppm but usually <10ppm). At these lower levels and use conditions, the prevalence of hypersensitivity is acceptably low and individuals allergic to the preservative may tolerate rinse off products (eg shampoos) preserved with it.

The patent on the original system is expiring. New systems may be introduced that are stabilised with other salts (copper) or contain the less allergenic fraction methylisothiazolinone.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone (and) methylisothiazolinone is the INCI name for the preservative and this is the name that must appear on cosmetic ingredient listing in the European and USA markets if a product contains it. Therefore, it is easy to determine consumer exposure (qualitative) to the preservative from use of cosmetic products. The absence of any meaningful ingredient listing on household products means that qualitative assessment of exposure from such sources cannot be made.

As the preservative is now essentially used only in rinse off products, any dermatitis with relevance to contact allergy to it will affect those areas mostly exposed to rinse off products: head, and hands. Labelling permits qualitative assessment of exposure to some product types that may contain it. There is no easy mechanism to assess quantitative exposure; it is exposure to an allergen in dose per unit area that is of pivotal importance for induction and elicitation. Because of this, for an individual allergic to the preservative, it is most practical to simply avoid using products identified as containing the preservative from the label. Levels of the allergen in a product may be too low to be able to elicit a reaction but the level will not be known."

Has anyone experienced hair loss by using Wen. I have a friend that posted on Facebook that a friend of hers was suing someone regarding Wen because of major hair loss. They say there is something in Wen that would cause it. I have been using it for the last few years and I can say that my hair is definitely much thinner than it use to be. I had to start using Joan Rivers Great Day to cover some of the bald spots on my head (which I her product btw). I thought it was due to age, I am 62, but it seems like it happened when I started using Wen.

I believe Wen can cause hair loss for some, just like shampoo is bad for others, and some break out from even the best skincare products. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to anything. I can't image the Wen class action suit (if it really exists) will get very far.

I have had no hair loss using Wen. In fact, my hair is thicker now. I have been using Wen exclusively for 2 1/2 years. My 10 year old daughter and 5 yr. old son also use it. None of have had any problems. We all have thick, healthy hair.

Thank you for posting this!!! Last year, I tried Wen in many different forms, and almost every product they carry. I noticed that when ever I would rinse my hair out, I had gobs of hair coming out. By the end of the year, my hair had thinned so much, I couldn't believe it. I stopped using it, and my hair is not falling out anymore. Will never go back to using this product. I think it works for some people, but not for me. Much too expensive, I buy a non sulphate, chemical free shampoo and love it. Plus it's so much cheaper.

I notice more hair in the drain after wen too but I think it is because you are more vigorous with the cleansing.I don't need to rub so much when I use shampoo.I think shampoo cleansing doesn't disturb the roots as much.i alternate the cleansing so my hair gets the best of both.

I do not use WEN, and don't intend to try. But to say as in MsX's post that "WEN does not cause hair loss" is rather silly, based on the dozens of posts and what I read are law suits over the product, there must be some cause.

If I were in your situation, whether you're using WEN or something else, I would discontinue the use of whatever product I had been using and choose something very mild for a while. If the hair loss stops, you should seriously consider WEN the cause. If not, maybe you should see a dermatologist. It might be a medical condition, and you should have treatment.

I used Wen for 3 months. One day I noticed the shower drain was clogged up with my hair. Never happened before. I pulled the hair out of the drain and immediately stopped using Wen. Haven't had any problems since. There is no product that is great for all!!!

I, too, stopped using Wen because of noticible hair loss. I have read on a prior thread how Wen is severely clogging drains for some to the point where a plumber is called in. The large amount of product that is required to effectively cleanse hair does not surprise me of this claim.

Thank you ladies for posting, I know I saw the picture of the girl that is suing and she had a major bald spot in her hair. I know for sure that my hair was thinning and my scalp started showing where it had not before. I agree that is must work for some but not others. I have very fine and thin hair and cannot afford to lose any hair. The ladies with thick hair probably do not mind a little hair loss. I do not know if it the over stimulation since the Wen has no lather or something else. I just know that I will not use it again. I thought it was just getting older but it was a little too much for that I think.

This is a HEATED debate among people. Some people get very offended and take this very personally (believe me).

I, too had to limit my use of WEN due to hair loss. I LOVE WEN and hated to stop using it, so I just use it occasionally now. I was almost bald on the top of my head by my bangs. I talked to my hair stylist and she had other clients with the same issue.

Yes, I went to my Dr. Yes, I had blood tests done. After I stopped using WEN everyday, I started to get some hair back.

I do believe this is an individual situation and it does not apply to everyone.

(ok...I'm ready for the beat down I'm going to get.......)

I have very fine and thin hair and cannot afford to lose any hair. The ladies with thick hair probably do not mind a little hair loss. I do not know if it the over stimulation since the Wen has no lather or something else. I just know that I will not use it again. I thought it was just getting older but it was a little too much for that I think.

kat7, Just curious, please share with us where you saw this picture

If you get push back from this post it is very likely because every time Chaz visits the Q this this topic is bashed to death by Wenners (which I am) and non users. I had a problem with hair loss from it and so did my cousin. I didn't even know that she was using it. She kept complaining that her hair had gotten very thin and was considering hair extensions. About 10 months later I met her for lunch and her hair looked beautiful so I told her how great it looked and that it didn't look thin at all. She then went on to tell me that she was using WEN and had realized that it was the WEN. She stopped using it and the hair loss stopped. This is exactly what happened to me. I started and stopped several times with a few months in between when I didn't use it. I know for a fact that it was WEN that did for me too. Not everyone can use it.

LOL, I find it absolutely that some women think that what they use would never be bad for someone else. Not everyone can wear the same perfume, etc..... Why in the world does someone get so offended or upset over a SHAMPOO or WEN. It is a product ladies not life or death. Just because I like something does not mean that some of you will. Or just because it makes your hair beautiful, it makes my hair fall out, CHILL OUT. You nor I are experts, I actually think some of you think I am lying about the story I was telling about one of my friends has a friend that is suing Wen because of hair loss. I would post it but do not know how.....I like Wen and wish I could use it but I cant
