Would You Tell Someone Their Perfume Is Too Strong

I was at the bank the other day. All the tellers know me by name and I know theirs. Anyway the teller had on a very strong perfume, it was like a punch in the face. She may not even realize how strong it is because I use perfume and never smell it on myself. I try not to spray on too much and like light fragrances. I didn't say anything, it's not my place. I certainly think someone should do her a kindness and tell her. Would you be bold enough to say something to a stranger or someone you didn't know that we'll?

No I wouldn't say a thing to a teller. You only have to be around her for a few minutes .... how often?

I feel bad for her co-workers, they do have a right to say something, since they see each other (banking hours are like 7 days a week now).

I know what you mean by the punch in the face reaction. There is rarely a time I actually like someone's perfume. So most of the time it's a yucky perfume and then it's punching you in the nose.

Seems the few times I notice someone's perfume and like it, the smell disappears as the good ones don't have but a 30 minute lasting power.

No, I wouldn't tell a bank teller. I wouldn't be around them for very long.

I was in the grocery store behind a woman who had the most obnoxious smelling perfume on. I finally had to skip an aisle to get away from her. If I sat next to someone in a restaurant or at the movies that was wearing very strong perfume, I would get up and move.

Would I tell a co-worker? Maybe. It depends on what kind of relationship I had with her.

I shared a classroom with a lady who bathed herself in Youth Dew. I hated it but lived with it. When my students complained about it, I discussed it with my department chairperson who in turn spoke with hers. I did not feel comfortable with telling someone his/her choice of cologne stunk.

It turned out her own students complained about the scent.

I would not tell anyone that their perfume was too strong, because FOR THEM, it isn't. I would say that although the scent was very interesting, I was overly sensitive to all scents, and I might get a (whatever) caused by MY intolerance. I would ONLY say this if it provided me with a way to escape the scent.

Unfortunately I'd have to agree that you really can't.

However, if the person asked me why I was wheezing so badly (I have asthma and obnoxious, strong perfumes make it hard to breathe), I might say that somebody in the area is wearing some very strong perfume and it's affecting my breathing.

Or I might not. But not only do strong scents give me difficulty with breathing I just don't like them. I like something that is light and fresh - nothing floral, musky, sweet, strong, or STRONG! It's just gross and then there's the asthma thing.

I'm amazed at the fact that people don't notice how strong and offensive some perfumes are.

If it's in my house, however, I probably will say something because it's not just me. Then the bird is involved and stuff like that could kill him.

My cleaning lady, one time, was finished and went into my husband's bathroom (thankfully, not mine!) to 'spruce up' before she left. She came out smelling like this really gross perfume and it was so strong I almost fell over. I couldn't hurry fast enough to get the bird away (fortunately my house is fairly large). She knew but she 'forgets' stuff a lot. Recently she showed up with one of her gross, strong perfumes on AGAIN. Her right to smell nasty stops at my door where my bird and I are adversely affected by it.

No, you should not say a thing; its the teller not someone your hanging around with all day long. Let her colleagues tell her if, in fact, it bothers them.

Not unless it was someone I had to be around all the time, like at work.

We have some male clients that come in for an appointment and we have to air out the office because the cologne they wear is so strong.

always a touchy subject for sure and I probably wouldn't say anything if it was someone I only saw once in a while. Of course since really strong scents tend to make me sneeze over and over again, unless they are completely dense they probably know why.

Many years ago, I dated a guy who's aftershave made me sneeze. After a couple of dates, I politely asked him if he would consider changing it to something else. His answer was no and the next time he asked me out, my answer was also no. I figured if he wasn't willing to compromise on something as minor as aftershave, then the big things were going to be too much of a problem.

I would not say anything to a stranger. I buy my husband fragrance and we talk about scents and he is the only one I would comment that the scent was to strong for me.

Agreed. AD no one would dream of asking them to tone it down. I'd never tell anyone that they sprayed too much unless it were a family member, or someone that I had to spend a lot of time next to (and who did this regularly). Sometimes you accidentally spray too close and need to run to work. She was probably well aware of it and just couldn't take a second shower before heading to work! No need to make her feel embarrassed.

I wouldn't say anything if I happened to encounter a too-strong or objectionable scent for just a few minutes on someone I encounter only occasionally. If this was happening on a regular basis with someone I spend a lot of time with -- a co-worker, a close friend, etc. -- or if I was truly having an allergic reaction to the scent.......I would speak up as tactfully as possible. In the workplace, I would speak to a supervisor if the offender didn't do something about the scent.

Ugh, men with the drugstore colognes!

And the teeny boppers at the mall places with the Try Me lotions at the store entrances...PHEW.

Even the candle stores. Gag.

Worst is the massage places at the malls. They use some sort of incense or lotion and it smells like a dirty litter box. All throughout the mall--upper and lower levels!

I told someone accidentally once. Came back to work from lunch. This awful stench was in the room and I thought perhaps we had been fumigated for bugs.

Me: ""Did they spray for bugs in here???""

Her: ""No.

Me ""Well WHAT is that SMELL???""

Her: ""Is it this?"" as she stuck out her wrist for me to smell.

Yup. That was it.
