I have never used WEN (& never will), but my hair had become dry/brittle/wirey awhile back. I asked my stylist about it. She asked if I take any vitamins with kerotin. When I said yes, she said that was probably it, too much can break/dry your hair to the point of all these symptoms. I cut back on taking it & hair is much better.

He said all these products that promote protein is causing hair to become dry and break. Why would we want to use 613, isnt that adding protein? This was during the a.m. remoist show with Carolyn. Some people wash with 613, some add to current routine, why would you need it and how do you know if you need it?

I have very fine hair and I use it every day with no problem. It makes my hair dry straighter than other blends I have tried - lavender and tea tree. I only buy the gallons, and I use a gallon from start to finish until it is gone. If it were trouble for my hair, I'd be in big trouble!

I have 3 bottles of 613 from a TSV I bought so I started mixing it with other cc just to use it up. About a week ago I noticed I have a ton of split ends. I haven't had split ends since I started using wen 5 yrs ago and now that I'm using the 613 I do. Coincidence...not sure but I'm going to get a good trim and stop using the 613 to see if that helps. Others swear by it...just depends on your hair type.

It certainly can but some people's hair needs more protein.

For my hair, too much of it can make it brittle and break. 613 made my hair like that.

I don't ever watch the WEN shows, but I have read about this issue here. Chaz's point is that protein can overload your hair if it's not balanced with moisture. Damanged or weak hair can be safely strengthened with protein as long as that balance is achieved.

If you aren't sure whether your hair needs more moisture or more protein, there's lots of advice online for figuring this out (usually on sites dedicated to curly or ethnic hair). Here is some information from one of these.

Do a strand test: take one of your ‘shed’ hairs and wet it. (Note, the difference between a ‘shed’ hair and a hair that has broken off is the ‘shed’ hair will have a little white bulb on the end)

While holding each end of the hair and stretching it:

-If the hair stretches slightly and returns to its original length without breaking, you are balanced.

-If the hair stretches and continues to stretch or stretches a little more than it should and then breaks (snaps), then you need more protein in your regimen.

-If the hair has very little to no stretch to it and instantly breaks(snaps), then you need more moisture in your regime.

Now, other than conducting the strand test, you can also tell by how your hair feels.

-While wet, if your hair feels weak, gummy, very stringy, or limp, you need protein.

-While dry, if your hair feels hard, dry, tangly, brittle, weak or any combination, you need moisture.

"He said all these products that promote protein is causing hair to become dry and break. Why would we want to use 613, isnt that adding protein?"

Eating a diet high that is very high in fats is bad for you, but eliminating all fat from your diet is ALSO unhealthy. All things in moderation. If I use too much protein, my hair gets brittle and breaks. I once found a weekly deep treatment I loved so much that I began using it every time I washed my hair. After a while (months), my hair was brittle and started breaking. Now I'm careful about protein.

I love Six-Thirteen because it makes my hair feel so soft. I just don't use it every wash, or even once a week. Sometimes, if I haven't been using any seasonals (which also have more protein than the core cleansing conditioners), I'll use Six-Thirteen a few washes in a row, maybe 3-5 times, then back off again. If I'm using seasonals frequently, I will only use Six-Thirteen rarely.

Hair is like anything else that has to do with your body - you have to learn how your own hair responds to protein the same way you have to learn how your own body responds to food and exercise. Some people need more calories because are very active and some need fewer because they are sedentary. You have to figure out what works best for you.

He was very correct and that includes 613. I use 613 and FTP <3 frequently and that was a reminder for me to use ReMoist.

If you use any protein product too frequently, you get protein overload: your hair feels like straw and it's dry and brittle. The frequency amount is dependent on the hair. It doesn't happen overnight and there are signs that it is happening.

Protein and moisture should be balanced.

I guess I didn't think about the seasonal's having more protein than the core's... thanks

Yes. Fig is the most moisturizing I have head/read that Tea Tree and Summer Honey Peach (last year's summer seasonal scent) are also very moisturizing (still not quite as moisturizing as Fig though), but I have never used either. When the seasonals were first introduced, they were described as a cross between the core scents and 613. They have some of the treatment based ingredients (amino acids) that the 613 has, but not as much. After experiencing progressively worse results with the seasonals/POM/613, it took me a long time to figure out that my hair doesn't really like the soy formulas OR too much protein I have figured out how to incorporate 613 since then and have it benefit my hair. But I have to really watch not to overdo it. I can only use it a tiny bit at a time, mixed with Fig, and only on my first cleanse (using straight Fig for the second).

I sure wish I knew what has happened with my hair and Wen. I have been a faithful user of Wen for quite a few years and have always been very happy with it, until recently. All of a sudden my hair has become very dry and brittle and I have not changed any of my haircare routine. I have very fine hair so use the Wen he recommends for that.

I am wondering if medication could be the problem as I am now on quite a few meds that I use to not be on. If so, I really don't know what to do as I need the meds.

Just curious if anyone else has had this issue if they are on new meds.

Thank you

Vicki

I found 613 very drying for me. I use it once in a blue moon after I color to use it up but I normally use Fig religiously. That is until I finally got the FTP seasonal and I love it. I think it is exactly what I need since my hair drinks up moisture. So far Fig and the Fall seasonal have been wonderful for my dry hair. I bought the TSV seasonals so I am excited to see if all of the seasonals are pretty much where my hair wants to be.

I have tried TT and while it's okay I find it's really only for me if I am having scalp issues plus I am not big on the scent. I also do the Fig remoist very sparingly as I find my hair doesn't really need it or it could be I'm lazy since you have to apply it to clean hair. I have a lot of thick curly hair so washing it is a big deal the very next day and time consuming. I also air dry exclusively and always have so I don't do a lot of damage to my hair at all.

Boy do I hear you on this! I actually find that using the remoist doesn't add a ton of time for me though, if I wash and then leave it in overnight. My hair soaks it up and it hardly takes any time at all to rinse out the next morning. The time tradeoff then, though, is that my hair takes forever to dry, and instead of starting to diffuse it from partially/mostly dry (having washed it the night before and NOT rinsing in the morning), I start all over again with sopping wet hair. It takes about 20 mins to diffuse dry if I've let it dry overnight, vs. about 60 mins from fully wet, no matter how much water I squeeze/sop out of it in between. So you might not find it adds too much time to rinse out the RM either

Thank you

Vicki

If you are on any NSAIDS, most notably Naproxen, then I would definitely guess it is your meds. Others can do it but Naproxen is really known for breaking hair.

On the flip side of the protein coin, last summer I really leaned into the SHP without balancing it out with 613 and greatly Overmoisturized my hair. I couldn't keep a curl for anything. I had to hit the 613 hard until I felt it being dry (several months) and now I have a good routine of incorporating enough 613 so that I have balance. I definitely need 613 in my routine.
