Highlights/Color More Often?

I have recently noticed that my highlights/color do not last as long as they used to.....my dear friend and hair stylist sadly informed me that this can sometimes happen as we get older.....sigh. Anyone else have this same experience?

Yes, I have noticed that I need to get highlights/low lights done more frequently. The color seems to lose its luster after 8 weeks. But I also attribute it to the water being very hard in this area, besides my age. (I am 51).

I need my roots touched up all of the time, but that is because I hate seeing the grey come in!

It is because white hair is more resistant to taking color.

I notice a difference when I go to different salons or use different stylists. Some last much longer than others even though I tell all of them that I want full hi/lo lights. Some stylists place the foils closer to the scalp than others do, so that allows more time for regrowth at the roots. The color tends to stay longer when I go to the stylist who orders TIGI products versus the stylists who use Aveda and Redken. Seems like when I go to the Redken salons, the color doesn't last long at all.

Not all haircolor products are the same. I think my salon has switched to a cheaper formulation to save them $.

Try changing your shampoo/conditioners. Some are very harsh on color treated hair.

I am glad this thread was started, because I just looked at my highlights and they don't look so great. I had them done just three weeks ago. I may go get some lowlights in. More money down the drain. Ugh.

I do so understand.....am sorry that you are also dealing with the same issue--very frustrating.

And it's more porous, so it doesn't hold color as long. I have the same problems.

I agree with switching shampoo/conditioner...some are very stripping of hair color (particularly over gray), even when marked color safe. I found my HG hair products and don't have this issue any longer. I only do root touch ups and nobody ever thinks that I color my hair. I get more shocked looks when I talk about it. Oh, and I color at home, so you'd think I'd be the first one who would be picked out as coloring her hair! It's worth trying different products to see what will work for you. Best of luck!

I'm 53, dark blonde (natural) with highlights and a few fuchsia pieces. My stylist is always amazed at how long my color lasts, especially the pink. She says this usually needs to be touched up every 6 weeks, but mine lasts for 4-5 months without a touch up. This is what works for me:

- I only use WEN cleansing conditioner, even bring it to my hair appointments.

- I only wash my hair every 3-4 days

- I have a whole house water softener, to combat our horrible hard water.

I found this post interesting when I saw this because I have been thinking the same thing. I have even stopped washing my hair as often. My hair gets highlighted every 8 weeks but after 5 weeks it seems to start fading.

I agree with what so many have said here.

I was getting highlights and lowlights until several months ago. I switched hairdressers and she suggested that I had enough gray that I color my hair for the lowlight and do highlights.

Well this has made more maintenance for me. Yes, she was right my hair is more one texture now that I have covered the gray with color so that is good and I do think it looks a little better.

I can just see my highlights fading after about four weeks and my lowlight seems to dull and even get slightly brassy. She is using Matrix hair color which is probably a good line but I am not sure my hair loves it.

I am on a really tight budget and so this is frustrating. I am using a good shampoo and conditioner too.

I noticed that also. I am graying more and more, and the highlights are absolutely a necessity of life for me. I can't put an all over color because it turns reddish orange--so the highlights are the best option for me.

However, it seems they don't last as long as they used to. In fact, I need to go this week and get them done. I switched stylists and salons and am wondering if it is their product. I get my hair cut about every 4-5 weeks. Just a trim and shaping, but it seems like the color goes away pretty fast! And I'm on a real budget, too. But I just look awful with dishwater blonde hair and more gray.

I only do highlights four times a year; my hair can't handle more. Highlights are the most damaging thing I do. My colorist uses a cap; he wants me to look as natural as possible. I forget what color he uses but it it a high end salon. When he does my roots every five weeks he sticks a few foils in on the front. He doesn't charge me extra for them although he's working for a new owner and she might not allow that. I've been going to that salon for twenty years so she'll probably look the other way. She was an employee before she bought the salon. Grey hair does not hold color well.
