On 12/28/2014 kcladyz said:
Well in general high end shampoos are better than drugstore. Even the best of the best drugstore shampoos are still not completely as good as salon. I believe they salon shampoos are expensive for they spend money on really researching and testing their products to make a high quality item. Also salon brands tend to be more concentrated thus you can use less and it will last longer. I mainly buy the expensive stuff when beautybrands has their liter sale when they are all $12 a liter. I refuse to spend $30-50$ on a liter unless i know in advance it will deliver. Makeup to me drugstore is as good as the department store brands.

Also when it comes to the branded walgreens , cvs and equate(walmart) it is the exact same as the brand only repackaged. companies often sell their surplus to other companies that will repackage it with their name. it is the same with drugs. If you think brand is better than generic its all in your head. its all the exact same drug only difference may be the color used. I know for i wrk in the drug business. Brand and the generic is the exact same thing no difference

There most certainly are differences between Brand and Generic drugs! Trademark laws do not allow the Generic drug Company to have all of the same ingredients as the Brand so the "inactive" ingredients are different i.e. dyes, fillers and preservatives. As a person with sensitivities & allergies I cannot always use the generic version of a drug. There are many times that my doctor will not allow me to use a generic due to the other ingredients - so don't be so quick to make the blanket statement that they are "exactly" the same. In addition, when it comes to cosmetics, yes there are big companies that own several "brands" but I know for a fact that Chanel is still Chanel. Aside from that, there is a huge difference between the high end brands that I use vs drugstore brands. The drugstore brands can't measure up in quality, the way the look on the skin or performance. There is a reason I spend the money on department store brands - its not all in my mind!!!! Its the same as when others say that there is no difference between high end apparel brands and low end and that your only paying for the name. That could not be further from the truth!!! Not only are you getting better fabric and superior style but most important of all, is the fit!!!

Have you ever been disappointed in the performance of a high end product? I'm using Bobbi Brown BB Cream which sells for $44 (I don't remember if I paid that or got a discount on it). I'm sorry to say that I don't think it works any better than a drugstore brand. When I spend big bucks on something I expect to get good results. Sometimes I think it's better to go with a drugstore product and have money in my pocket!

Besides perfume, (love Jo Malone, cheap brands = headache for me) I have always been slightly mad at myself for falling for expensive cosmetics. Don't get me started on BB eyeshadows. And I wanted so bad for IT BBUE to work for me, but it didn't.

Yes! I would rather have money than high-end cosmetics. If I buy a Tom Ford lipstick for $50.00 or a Rimmel for $5.00, I am going to wash it off at the end of the day and no one who sees me during the day will know or care how much my lipstick cost.

Today I put maybelline age rewind (12 dollars) on one side of my face, and Guerlain silk (60 dollars) on the other, and honestly, I saw no difference. They both look fine, but why do I think an expensive product will be the bomb. So easy to fall for the hype.

Yes, I was so happy when Bobbi Brown came to QVC, as I was interested in trying her line. I bought a set of eye shadows and the darkest color separated from the base and I had to throw that color out. I did not find that the product or the packaging warranted the higher price. I am finishing the shadows but will not purchase again.

I think I once heard that Loreal and Lancome were owned by the same parent company.

I posted this on another thread, but the point is that there are only a handful of manufacturing companies in the entire world which make the products sold under the thousands of brands in the world. Very few brands have total power (like those under the umbrella of the Estee Lauder Co.), where they have control everything from formulation to putting the finished product into the package for distribution. That's why we see so many similarities.

The manufacturing company comes up with something. They present it to let's say high end brand A which is willing to incur higher manufacturing costs (a few more active ingredients, perhaps more pigment in the color products, and better packaging). High end A brand is going to mark up the product more than 100 times the manufacturing costs, so they'll make their money and then some. Same manufacturer offers the same product to low end D brand. D has to sell at a lower retail price, so they may take out a little of this or a lot of that, use cheaper packaging, but basically puts a similar product on the market.
