My hand experiment

I decided I didn't like the look of my hands.

They definitely look older than the rest of me. I guess all the years of constant handwashing as a nurse showed itself.

So I did an experiment. I used Retin-A on my hands most every night. My hands tolerate it better than my face. I can only use it on my face every other night, and even less in winter. My skin can get drier, flaky and itchy.

I would skip it a couple times a week to apply Skinceuticals C E Ferulic.

I am sorry to say that even after several months, I don't really see improvement in the skin of my hands.

I really thought if it worked for the face, it might for the hands. Not for me.

I may keep on with it some more time. But, I am sure disappointed. I use it on my face, under my eyes, and on my neck.

Hyacinth

I use a scrub on my hands, like Bath and Bodyworks Instant Manicure or one of the Philosophy Salt Scrubs, followed by a good hand cream, like L'Occitane 25% Shea or Bath and Bodyworks Vanilla Buttercream Hand Cream.

Do it at night before bed and your hands will be smooth and soft next morning.

Hyacinth, I wouldn't lose hope. First off, Retin A is going to do something, even if you don't see it. From what I recall it actually changes something in the skin cells, and can reverse sun damage. Keep at it. It took a long time to get there, it may take more than 30 days for a noticeable difference.

You didn't mention what strength Retin A you were using. Perhaps a stronger version would work better on your hands? Also, have you considered derma rolling your hands?

Finally, since you see them every day, there could well be small changes and you aren't seeing them. Chin up, dear girl!

I agree with Krissy22, give it some more time, the results may not be apparent, yet.

My husband and I notiiced a remarkable difference and improvement in our skin once we removed everything we use, including dish detergant and hand soap, that contained sulfates, especially SLS. We wash our hands frequently and they were taking a beating, especially during the colder months.

I don't know if you worked in a hospital or not, but typically, the cleansers and hand sanitizers that they use are ridiculously harsh.

I think it takes about 6 months to start to see a difference with Retin A. Of course, this is assuming that you were using sunscreen the entire time or else you may well see a negative effect.

I've been using Hand Restore from Skinn Cosmetics on ShopHQ for about 6 months and think my hands look noticeably better. It has a slight bleaching effect but mostly makes the skin appear to be smoother and very soft. I use it on the backs of my hands only 2X daily.

Exfoliate your hands a couple times/week. Slather on a thick emollient like Aquaphor or a more natural non-petrol jelly like product. Wear white cotton gloves to bed a few times/week and you'll see a difference.

My hands definitely show their age. I am such a tom boy and only wear gloves while gardening. I think the problem with aging hands is there is no longer any "fat" under the skin. I found that out when I suffered a significant injury last year and the skin on the top of one hand was torn and pulled back and all I could see was bones. It was very scary. My dh was in emergency with me while they fixed me up and he said, "gosh I didn't realize how thin your hands are". I have long fingers and throughout my youth, everyone said how beautiful my hands were and how I could have been a hand model. At near 70 ~ if they could see me now. LOL
