I posted a few weeks ago about my experience(s) with trying to get a good haircut. Well, that haircut was great compared to the recent cut I experience last week. I really, really can't take it anymore. How can this keep happening? I grew my hair out to below my chin and just wanted a modified bob with a little texturing at the crown and top layers to have a bit of lift. I took a few pictures showing the style in different lengths to allow for some options since mine was not all that long yet or may not have that much to work with.

History: I had paid $52 for a haircut and so crooked, one side longer than other, a big chop out of the left side and length lost as cut up above chin length. So I let it grow for 7 weeks, really out of control, have conference to travel to for work and no time to style a crooked haircut for 4 days and made the decision to get a trim to help even it out. I made an appointment with a stylist a friend recommended at a nice salon and OMG she really ruined my hair! Took off more length when I specifically said I lost too much length on last cut and want to again grow it below my chin to keep off my face, wanted a bit of texturizing to lighten up the top a bit and she completely layered only the top half of my hair. Picture this, a completely layered cut from the ears up and one length underneath it! Layers are now sitting on a completely poofed out too short bottom. Throw in the fact that the left side is completely not blended and flips up and out and I really can't do a thing with this. Can't even go back as can't afford to lose any more length and at this point am really just scared to have anyone touch this hair. What is a person to do!? I am embarrassed to look like this.

If anyone else needs to vent, has had anything close to this happen please advise. I think this happens way more than it should.

Hi QVCfan- I haven't been happy with my haircut either so I understand! It seems to me that there are quite a few stylists out there who just don't try as hard any more especially if you have been going to them awhile. On the other hand, I think it takes a couple times for a new stylist to get used to your hair, especially if it is wavy like mine. Hang in there, that's my only advice!!

I was using the same stylist for nearly 30 years. A few years (yes, years) before finally leaving her I would suggest and nearly beg for a different longer cut/style. I was constantly shot down because "that wouldn't look good on me". "In your 40s, you should not let your hair grow out."

So I reluctantly keep the same miserable 1980s mullet I had since high school. And then I started to notice more and more that I was "fixing" my cut after coming home from the salon. Things finally broke when the tears turned to rage and my DH asked "why in the world do you keep going to her?"

I think it was mostly out of loyalty and habit. That was 3 years ago. I finally found a stylist that listened to me and has given me the best cut and style that I've had in 30 years. It took time to love my hair again. I did have to get it cut short and gradually let the style grow out, but it was well worth it. I really didn't like the short hair at all, but I knew I needed that "reboot" to get to where I wanted to be.

Finally the hideous mullet is gone, and my hair is a few inches below my shoulders...almost a very long bob with side swept bangs. What I've been wanting for far too long!

I would suggest to anyone that if the person doing your hair is not doing it well, leave! Go to a new place. I went to a few new places and made consultation appointments before I decided on a person I felt comfortable with. It's your money and they are providing a service. If the service is awful you have every right to walk and find someone better.

I'm not sure how you are choosing your stylist, but if it's word of mouth have your thought of hanging out in the salon and actually watching them do a few cuts before they do yours? I had a guy cutting my hair a few years ago, he was good enough, but no the best. The problem was I often spent a lot of time in that salon waiting for my appointment because other clients showed up late for theirs. I watched a stylist in front cut hair many times and eventually when mine was out of town for the summer I went to her. She is the stylist I recommended to people even when my stylist came back and continued cutting my hair. Eventually I went to a whole other salon because I didn't like having my appointments pushed forward or changed because they couldn't keep a schedule in that salon. I am thrilled with my current stylist recommended to me by her brother who I worked with. I never watched her cut hair first but I have many times since and she is awesome.

The good thing about bad haircuts: Hair grows.

Did you complain to the hair dresser? I would have - it won't help the bad haircut, but you might get your money back. At least you'd be venting where it would do some good.

I've had so many bad haircuts, I could fill several pages on this thread with my own experiences. It happens. There was the stylist who picked up real scissors instead of thinning shears by mistake and I ended up with a huge bald spot on the top of my head for weeks. I had to get a super short pixie cut to hide it until it could all grow out.

I can say from experience that a person can really be traumatized by a trip to the hair salon. Thank goodness our hair does grow and these events are only temporary.

I think sometimes we go in with a picture and and idea of how we want to look... and when it turns out to be not like the picture, we call it a bad hair cut. I just yesterday got my hair cut SHORT like Pink's style below. It is really short on the sides, and I only wish I looked as cute as Pink, but , in a week or two as it grows a bit and I work with it, I think I will be very happy. Just gel and water and go. Easy haircut. My hair is white now, and I have not worry of grow out anymore so I can enjoy going short on the sides.

I'm still struggling with my $80 cut that was months ago. For some of you that have fast growing hair it's probably not much of an issue. For me, it will be many months, if not a year or two, before my hair is back to it's normal self. But I'm done. I've learned to cut my own bangs, and it will be a LONG time before I go in for a trim. I'm going to have to have a few inches cut off to fix this mess, and I'm not willing to lose all of my length.

Good thing my hair grows so fast. I wouldn't have time to be angry. What I would be angry about is paying some of the prices listed here for a haircut. Wow. I get excellent service for way less, thank goodness, since I go once a month.

Oh no, it's not just you! Unfortunately. Did you already go to the conference? Or is it upcoming? My thought was maybe you could get some extensions or a wig? Maybe that would help you to get by, until your hair grows out enough to fix it.

To the op and everyone else whose had bad haircuts, I'm so sorry and feel your pain. It has happened to me so many times that I really think I got traumatized by it. By that I mean that I became so nervous and scared every time I went to the hair dresser. I too had a hairdresser for 20 years and she never gave me what I wanted, did things I didn't ask for, and put my hair in a ponytail and cut it for the little bit of fringe I asked for. I lost about 4 inches and it was a mullet. I couldn't have it fixed because I couldn't stand any more length taken off. Yes I told her exactly what I thought and left her never to return. That was a big thing for me. For whatever reason I felt guilty leaving her. As much as I should have left her years ago I felt that I needed to give her my loyalty. Almost like a cult. How crazy is that? Dh was so happy when I finally left her. He was telling me for years to leave her. He hated her. So it took me three years to grow out what she did to a point where I was feeling good about my hair again. The new hairdresser I had found had a baby and never came back. Yup I was back at square one and the same thing happened. I went in for a trim and way too much was taken off. Took two more years to recover from that one. So I know hair will grow back. And thank goodness for that! Lol. But it is heartbreaking to see three years worth of growth gone in 10 minutes. My goal is tailbone length. Im in between brastrap and waist right now. And I have found several hair dressers that are great. And I'm much more relaxed. I now make sure I'm perfectly clear on what I want because there have been some times where I wasn't. And I admit that of course. I wanted some highlights lighter than my ash blonde hair. I got bleach highlights. But since I didn't ask for bleach I didn't think I would get them. But usually lighter will contain bleach. I should have thought that one out. That mistake is still killing me because of the damage from the bleach. So some of the mistakes have beeny fault. But the major ones were not. I understand hair, in the grand scheme of things is not really that important. Is it more important than life? Heck no! But how one feels about their hair is important. I love my hair. I'm always striving for it to be healthier and longer. When I feel good about my hair, I feel good aboutyself. Sorry this is long and with no paragraphs! Yikes. Hope it wasn't too hard to read. For whatever reason my phone won't let me do paragraphs. Weird.

Yes, indeed. I have been cutting my own hair because of the same issue. Haircuts are so expensive now, I can't afford to make those kinds of mistakes.

I have played it safe for years with a chin length blunt cut ..... it's easy to poof up or keep it sleek, or somewhere in between. It's hard to ruin that style, thank goodness.

What I struggle with is THE COLORIST. .... Getting highlights, lowlights, or two step color process can be just as grueling, if not more .... more expensive and more ways it can go wrong.

Years ago, I went to a hairdresser in Beverly Hills that was nothing short of a MAGICIAN .... women would literally stop me on the street and demand to know who did my hair , because it was so gorgeous .... well, she retired and moved to Las Vegas, so those days are over .... but I did stop going to her when I moved ... and her prices had gone up to $290 for two step color and cut!

It was worth every penny ..... IF you could afford her! Sigh .....

Weird.

Spookyghost, I made you some paragraphs as you made some good points.

Is our hair the most important thing in the world? No, but it is the one thing of our appearance that we put totally in the hands of someone else and is a very important part of our self image. We can request certain things, show pictures, but bottom line is that it is more or less a gamble that the stylist understands what we want and do not want and has the talent to do it. Cost is secondary to me, though it ticks me off to pay someone for bad work.

Off topic, Mayflowers, I believe we have met on another forum, Kitchens?

Thanks to all who understand that a bad cut is justifiably traumatizing. Feel free to post and vent away.

I never understood why hair stylists can't take direction from their clients, especially when presented with a photo. It's obvious if the client isn't happy with their work, the stylist loses what could be a great customer.

This thread sure caught my eye. I've been struggling with bad cuts for several years too. Sometimes it's good and recently they've been bad consistantly. I did get a good cut....went back and it was bad. How can that be? I'm beginning to think maybe it's my hair.

Nothing has changed....no health issues, not taking any meds....but my hair just won't blend in anymore. Of course I'm getting older so maybe that's a factor?

So I recently decided to let it grow out and go with a blunt cut like you Tinkrbl44. I wore mine like that for years and could just cut around the bottom when it needed some freshening.

As to taking in pictures.....I'd take in pictures of ME and they still could not cut it like I'd had it before. I did have a fabulous stylist years ago but alas he moved away.

I sure feel better knowing I'm not alone
