LOve my short hair this summer. I cut it usually in May and then by September I am ready to grow it a little longet, more into a modified bob (long on the sides, but not long on top). Problem was that it got unruly, and I think It dragged by face down if you know what I mean. So now I think I will keep it short and sassy (aging myself) in a funky hairstyle, easier to keep. I always get compliments when my hair is shorter. Hate that growing out stage, so my motto, if you get beat them, join them. LOL

Any of you "older" women out there try to grow out a pixie? Had it cut in May and hate hate hate it. I always had a chin bob and wanted to change it up and now I am suffering. What should I do. How often should it be trimmed if I want it to grow out? Used Calista embellish but can't tolerate the fragrance. HELP

As long as your hair doesn't have a lot of damage you can have it trimmed twice a year until you reach the length you are most comfortable with. I know there are hair stylists that told me to have it cut every 6 weeks but they ended up just cutting off too much and it took a couple of years to get to a chin length bob. I had a pixie a few years ago and did the every six month cut and reached my goal far sooner than when I trimmed my hair every 6 weeks as recommended.

Good luck!

I am thinking about doing this also, have worn my hair short for a few years now. I am at that stage where I can't stand it and tempted to get it cut. Maybe if I just get it colored and a few highlights I could tolerate it for a little longer. Let see what everyone else has to say.

I'm not growing out a pixie, but growing out my layers.

Stimulate your scalp for growth w/ rosemary essential oil (other oils do this, too). Horsetail extract is great on hair, but not all these are alike.

Make sure you eat well and get all your vits & mins. Exercise can't hurt either.

I'm growing out long layers too, and it's taking FOREVER. I have been faithfully getting a trim (less than 1/2") every 8 weeks or so, but that still takes off too much growth. At 58 I decided for the first time in my life to have really long hair. Now I know why I never did - I'm too impatient!

The only advice I can give you is BE PATIENT and look the other way...

The guy who does my hair has suggested that I go in ever six weeks for trimming the ends.

I've been working on it now since about May ... we are still trying to find an easy care style so each time I go in for a trim, we do something new.

I really like what he did last time ...

The last time I grew out a pixie, at first all I had trimmed was the length - kept the length slightly below my nape and the front at the bottom of my ears until the shortest hair above my ears got close to being even. The stylist occasionally evened up the layers. Wore a lot of headbands, but it was the least painful grow-out I've done. Now I'm growing out my natural grey - just about as frustrating.

I cut my hair into a short style, almost a pixie about 15 years ago. I have started to grow it out at least once a year. No success, I hate it when it gets too long to have any style, but not long enough to look good either. I end up cutting it every time. I finally have given up and I guess my long hair days are over. Oh well, it is so easy to style and I am cooler in the Summer. Good luck with growing yours out, I wish you great success!!!!

It's not an easy thing to bear. However, if you can afford it, go in every 4 weeks for a trim and upbeat talk with your stylist. This helped me get over the hair doldrums so much I can't tell you.

As I write this, I will admit that next week I have an appointment with my stylist to go really short again. DD did a long shave of her hair as her 11 month DD is nearly bald. They look really sweet together and DD looks great with her hair that way and we live in the perfect city for that look anyway. So...as Oma, I decided to join the group with a short do.

Good luck! Hang in there.

My sister and I were given a pixie cut at the start of every summer in the late 60s - darn that Twiggy & Mia Farrow! By the start of the school year it was shoulder length. We must have been pretty healthy eaters.

Nowadays, there are so many style options I think every "grow out" period can be made fun. First, I'd make sure to take some biotin, which will help from the inside. Then I'd just keep things cute with barrettes, headbands & products until the initial super layers grow a bit. I'd get the back length trimmed every so often to let the sides catch up.

I'm sure you'll look pretty through the whole process.

I just got a couple of the cheap plastic ones close to my hair color, put one one my head where my bangs start and just pushed it back far enough to get the choppy layers off my face and ears. Ah, yes, I know the "triangle" stage - lol. Fortunately, it doesn't last long. The headband will help and I don't know if you blow dry or air dry, but a little mousse or gel, scrunching the top layers and air drying will sort of break up the straight lines.

Hang in there

I know there are hair stylists that told me to have it cut every 6 weeks but they ended up just cutting off too much and it took a couple of years to get to a chin length bob. I had a pixie a few years ago and did the every six month cut and reached my goal far sooner than when I trimmed my hair every 6 weeks as recommended.

Good luck!

I had a very short layered haircut three months ago and no more of those! I'm also trying to let it grow back to a bob and am holding out until Christmas when it will have been six months, so about three inches or more of total growth by then. I agree with SoftRaindrops about avoiding frequent trims. Fortunately, I had a great haircut and things are going decently as far as styling. I do wear a lot of hairbands and a barrette for my bangs every now and then.

I used to frequent a hair forum called the long hair community and there was answers to all your hair questions. And growing out pixies was a topic for sure! When I was growing out my bangs I used a head band, one of those soft sporty ones, and just pushed my bangs back. I had no choice and I actually got a few compliments on it!

I read an article about growing out a pixie cut, and you should keep the back shorter for awhile so the front can catch up. Seems it the front needs more time to grow out so the cut does not look weird (sorry can't think of the word they used) as it grows out.

I have wavy hair and want to keep layers. I like the look of soft blonde waves.

He trims a tiny bit off the ends all over my head - shaping it into a new style every six weeks until I find one that I like. That way, I can live with the style a couple of weeks and see how easy it is to manage myself ... and tweak next time if necessary.

I never want to look like I'm "in between" hairstyles.

If you can get away with it, I've found hats to be a great remedy, particularly in the winter when you can justify it to keep warm, too. Ditto on working with your stylist on a new look with each trim - when I've done it I've also extended the time between trims - enough to keep the ends healthy but long enough to allow for growth.

I once went from short (not quite pixie) to blunt cut waist length. I think it took three years. I just went from extreme pixie to that new bob thing - longer in front, tapered up in the back (love it). It's taken about nine months. I love my stylist; (she loves my tips) and never fails to deliver an excellent cut, so even during the "grow out" phase, it's always workable.
