The best to get the tangles out is using oil. VO5 makes a hot oil treatment.

It may take several tubes since her hair is long. Heat the tubes and rub all over her hair. Put in a plastic shower cap for about one hour. Then take your fingers to get out the tangles. Using a comb or brush will break the hair.

My 16 yo daughter has very long (waist length length) thick hair. She woke up one morning and it was all tangled and matted. She worked at it and it loosened up but then got worse. She tried my wen but it didn't work. I am able to work in small sections and get it untangled with little cutting but I'm wondering if there is anything else I can do to speed this process up. I also have long, thick hair but not as long as hers and I won't use anything but Wen anymore. My scalp used to scratch really bad with any shampoo used and it got flaky. I've read blogs that say shampoo and don't shampoo, condition the heck out of it to cut it all off. Would you want all your hair cut off if you were a 16 year old girl? Please help!

Have you tried the kids detangling spray? Also if she is going to keep her hair that long and is prone to tangles, she should do something with it at bedtime. Also to protect it from split ends. Wear a cap or braid as Mz iMac said. Why not wet her hair and the. Use the WEN comb from bottom to top to detangle and then blow dry in sections.

before we started wen my daughter's hair used to knot something fierce. I would not shampoo your daughter's hair until you have a good portion of the knots out or it will get worse.

I used california baby detangling spray. They sell it at Target and wholefoods. If you have one of them close by it may be worth picking some up. I cannot tell you how many sprays we tried and this one worked the best. My daughter had "adult" hair by the time she was a couple years old, no baby soft fine hair for her. Whatever sray you end up using soak her hair, if it that bad. Let it set in for awhile and then COMB it in sections. Very slowly starting at the bottom.

Going forward, maybe your daughter should consider a hair cut. Long hair is a lot of work and not for everyone. If it is tangling this bad it may be time for a fresh start

My granddaughter has waist length too. She got it tangled and matted while swimming the one time it wasn't braided about 2 weeks ago. I sprayed hair conditioner mixed with water on her hair and combed it with a very wide tooth metal comb that originally was purchased at a pet store for my dogs. I worked from the bottom to the top In very small sections. It took me about 2 hours, and she was crying before it was done. She will be 10 in September and wants her hair cut for her birthday.

My daughter is 15 and has almost waist length hair....we use alterna oil, but you could probably apply any oil to make the hair slippery. Then comb through one small section (i use my fingers to gently release a section of hair from the rest of the hair) at a time from ends to roots. I work through the major tangles with my fingers first, then We use a wide toothed comb or a tangle teaser. My daughter's hair doesnt get matted too often, but this is the technique that works for us. Just be patient and separate the sections as best you can....it will probably take a while to work through.

Braids at bedtime--good idea--and what about a satin pillow case? I had long hair as a teen and I tangle like crazy. Hairdresser recommended a satin pillowcase. And she will need a trim, but of course she'll worry that "too much" will get cut. It grows back...

I have really long hair and have the same problem. I finally broke down and bought the Mason Pearson Detangler brush. It cost around $100.00. (You can probably search the Internet for a better price. I was desperate and ran out at lunchtime and bought mine at Barneys.) It works on wet or dry hair. It goes through my long, wet hair like a hot knife through butter. I bring it with me to the hair salon. The salon employees are amazed at how well it glides through wet hair. I've owned this brush for about four years and can't live without it.

When I was a teenager, we showed poodles. They have to have LONG coats, and ours would mat terribly. We would wrap their ear hair in wax paper, roll it up, and hold it with a rubber band. I had long hair at the time, and I used this technique every night. I would make a ponytail, and wrap it in paper towel rather than wax paper, but it worked. Never a tangle in the morning!

Get your daughter some sateen (no, not satin) pillow cases. Regular pillow causes cause friction on hair as you move during sleep which leads to breakage, tangling, knotting, etc. Sateen pillow cases allow the hair to easily slip around without any friction resulting in less tangling, etc. I had really long hair when I was younger that was always getting tangled, etc, and a number of hair dressers recommended sateen pillow cases.

Buyer the Tangle Teezzer (only one Z but it wouldn't post the word). Saved my hair. I have the same length and thickness; this glides through wet and dry hair.

Also, she either needs to braid, pineapple or twist her hair up at night. Long hair requires time and effort else, cut it short.

I had super, fine, super thick past my bottom hair, but I cut and donated it. I always slept with it braided. Those Victorians knew what they were doing when they slept like that. I would either get it cut due to damage from being matted and start fresh braiding it at night, or thoroughly spray with detangler, California Baby is GREAT, or good old olive oil, and comb out in small sections from bottom to top, then never not braid it again!

Best wishes!
