Have any of you been challenged yet?

I just saw Charlie Sheen's version where he dumps $10K in bills over his head and said that would be his donation. He challenged Jon Cryer, Chuck Lorre & Ashton Kucher to do the same. I gotta say it's inventive.

Oprah did the challenge then challenged Steven Spielberg, Manish Dayal & Helen Mirren to do the same. IMO, this was just Oprah advertising her co-produced movie, The Hundred-foot Journey. Not sure if I appreciate that.

The news blurb said the ALS organization received $1.-something million last year, to this date. This year their to date is $13.-something million. Huge increase! The challenge must be working to bring awareness to the cause.

I personally have not been nominated to do it because I am not on social media. My kids have been nominated, and have done it, one of them doing it twice. I saw a clip on the news last night that the ALS foundation is reporting their donations are quadruple what they usually are. Glad it is at least working. It did kind of throw a wrench into my constant preaching to my children about being a leader not a follower. "Relax, it is for charity!" is what my daughter's response was. If everyone would just send in $1 rather than waste the time posting the ridiculous videos....

I need to do this. DH passed away from ALS three years ago. The research is getting close to at least one cause of ALS and we need to fund it. I can't tell you how many people have told me that they have a family member or know someone currently suffering from this fatal disease. My husband got off "easy" (his heart gave out) but it was going to be very ugly and nasty for him. It took me a long time to be able to not cry every day, and fighting ALS is a way to fight back for him. (Love of my life.)

I'll give you some other good news on ALS. In case you don't know, I have a science advanced degree (like biochem) and I worked in labs and related industries with researchers for years until I retired and started a second career in finance. So I do read research about various diseases.

A funny thing would happen to my late husband who died of ALS. He had the most weird reaction to MSG (monosodium glutamate.) If there was any in food (say, in a sausage or hash or a sauce) he would get very tired right after eating and literally could not hold his head up for an hour. So if we ate out and were unlucky and something had MSG, we had to sit and wait until he could get up again. Since many people have weird reactions to MSG, we didn't think anything about that.

Fast forward to today, after he's been gone a few years. I read that a protein has been discovered that clogs up the nerve endings in people with ALS, and glutamic acid metabolism (that same glutamate in MSG, and also in most proteins we eat--it's everywhere) is involved in the problem with the nerves. Something happens and this protein should be "recycled" from the nerves but it isn't--and eventually the person gets sick. Which may be why people tend to get this in their 40's and 50's--they've had a lifetime of a genetic problem with a certain protein (and glutamic acid) and by their 50's they develop ALS.

This means--in case this was REALLY boring science stuff for you, that if they KNOW the PROTEIN that is defective, they can find the pathway to stop the problem with various drugs or develop a drug. I estimate we are about 2 decades away from a treatment, if not a cure, for ALS!!!!!

I know 2 decades sounds long, but in pharmaceutical and medical research it is NOT long. So your money and my money is going to REALLY have an important role in curing this horrible disease. THERE IS HOPE--not today, but in our lifetime.
