do you use a banana clip?

remember banana clips? I have a lot of hair and when I want to pull it back and get it up off my neck I have always used a banana clip. mine didn't damage my hair, didn't pull and didn't leave a weird dent in it when I take it down. I used the same clip every day for years but recently lost it. I looked in every B&M store in my area and couldn't find one ( what's up with that???) so I ordered a set of 3 from Amazon ( the type and length I wanted were actually hard to find online too). each one broke after using it only 6 or 8 times. so I'm looking online again today and paying more attention to the reviews. many of the reviews include comments about how they broke after just a few uses and how cheaply made they were.

so, banana clip users out there,where do you buy yours and what brands are good? I hate wasting money on cheaply made products that don't last, even if it's just a few dollars.

IKWYM! When one of my favorites breaks, I'm so sad. I keep an eye out for them in boutiques, when we travel (found a nothing-but hair clips-store in Lucca, Italy and went nuts!), and at hair salons. Also, upscale drugstores ("Pharmacies"), Sally Beauty, Beautyfirst, Ulta, often have clip displays as well as carts in the halls of malls. Found one from a cart in Scottsdale Fashion Square with gorgeous crystal-embellished clips of all sorts -- $$, but I couldn't resist at least one! I sort of collect them, even though some are prettier than functional, I keep them.

I found some really pretty ones at Nordstrom Rack.

ETA: Actually, I think what I bought are called butterfly clips. Not sure. Maybe they would work for you. The NR near me usually has a pretty good selection of hair accessories.

vaccinia, I would have never thought to look on the Nordstrom website. I found some beautiful hair clips made by France Luxe, but pretty pricey. I googled the company, though and then found some on eBay. thanks for that suggestion.

I have a couple that are pretty old. I don't doubt they would be hard to replace. I wanted a new pik, boy was that hard to find. How about some place like Sally's beauty supply.

I had to Google to find out what these are, lol! I've never used one, but those I saw online seemed quite flimsy and were mostly modeled by women who seemed to have straight, fine hair. Do they actually hold thick, coarse hair, too? Are there different clips sold based on hair thickness?

I looked on the Sally's website and they don't have what I need.

I haven't seen banana clips in years. I wore them back when I was in high school. I think clip styles have moved on.

I used them years ago or rather decades ago when I had big poofy permed hair. I didn't even know they still made them. Good luck finding them.

I used them back in the early 90's. I know what you are looking for, the big heavy duty clips. The ones that made to hold a lot of thick hair. I see the light weight, smaller versions but I haven't see a one of the big old ones in years.

I use amish style pins and bun my hair or I do a French twist and a large clip like a ficcare. Sometimes I use hair sticks.

Walmart used to carry them. I don't like them & prefer the butterfly clips. I get them at Dollar Tree. I use them all summer to keep my hair up and off my neck, always have one in my purse.

The brand I like is KATRINA. I used their headbands...holds & keeps the shape. I would think the banana clips would perform as well, Ulta carries KATRINA.

My hair is down to my waist so as soon as I change my clothes when I get home from work the clip goes in until hours later for bedtime. I just buy mine and Wal-Mart with an extra at home and one to keep at the office if needed. We lost our air conditioning years ago up here in August with no way to open windows on the tenth floor. So glad to have my clip!!

I have had really good luck with the large clips from Wal-mart for the past 15 years or so. I have not had to replace too often.

Goody used to make my favorite, amber colored, thick banana clip (2 pcs. ... were not connected at bottom). I have one set remaining, and when one of the "teeth" break, I will have to find a new hair style. (Use it in humid weather, and when I get out of the shower prior to styling my hair).

The thinner ones (e.g., Scunci and "Katrina" do not stay "secure" in my fine hair). I have even thought of writing Goody to bring back this retro look!

LOL, I still have one from the 80's that I use. There used to be three and I don't know what happened to the other two.

I see Amazon carries them if you want to purchase more.

I use them only around the house. never when I'm going out, so I'm not at all concerned that clip styles have moved on. it's a utility thing only. my hair is not coarse but there is a lot of it and I use these clips every day when I'm washing my face ( they keep my hair completely pulled back without it flipping down over my shoulders when I lean down to rinse my face) , when I'm working in the garden, or doing anything at home that I just don't want my hair in my way. my hair is very straight so I don't want to twist it up and clip it because then I would have dents in it if I've left it up for any length of time.

yes, crystaltree. it's the heavy duty, sturdy clips that I'm looking for. as I said, I bought some clips (from Amazon) that were cheap, flimsy plastic and broke after just a few uses.

the clips I found online ( France Luxe) that look really nice and well made ( they have a metal base to support the clip) are probably too short. they are 3 1/2-4" and I think the one I use to have that worked for me was more like 5 or 6".
