Missha First Treatment Essence! The SK II essence is the best selling product in their line and costs well over $100. It is a yeast based skin softener that is applied like a toner after cleansing and before treatments. I searched the web and found that Missha (love their BB creams) also has a very similar yeast based lotion which you can find on Amazon for around $32. Asian women originally used this product swear by it for keeping skin clear and toned. It was originally found in the factories where women made sake and although they got older their hands always stayed soft and youthful. Always wanted to give it a try but the SK II was too costly. Just a heads up for you fellow skincare junkies!

JM I was glad to find this dupe too. I think Missha is a good line so I'm willing to trust their essence is quite similar to SKII. The main ingredient is "pitera" (I think) which is the yeast that comes from sake, guessing this might be the argan oil of Asia!!!!

How do you like to apply it? In the picture on the Missha site, it looks like a cotton pad is being used, but then in the instructions it says to use the palm of your hand?

Also, initially in reading the ingredients, I was alerted to PROPANEDIOL being second on the list. Propanediol is another name for Propylene Glycol. I've read several place on the internet where it doesn't sound like it's something we'd want on our skin, but then today I found another article that essentially dispels that. Anyone know for sure?

I found the Missha essence about a year ago and tried it. While it didn't irritate my skin, so had zero results from it. Absolutely no change in my skin, so did not repurchase. I haven't tried SKII, so can't compare.

JM Since they both have a high percentage of the main pitera ingredient than that is good enough for me to give it a try too. I know SKII charges a lot because they are known as a real prestige brand with elaborate packaging etc and have Cate Blanchette as their spokeswoman. So maybe Missha saves on those features and can still offer the same/similar strength ingredients. I'm always willing to give something a try at least once!

The EWG posts that there is a "low" harm risk rating with the propanediol. Tom's of Maine uses it as a base for their deodorant. Apparently, it is also safe for consumption. Just some google-izing I did.

After doing a little more research, I discovered some interesting differences between the two essences. The Missha essence doesn't contain Pitera, the active ingredient in SKII. SKII has exclusive rights to that ingredient. Pitera is the yeast formed from making saki and the yeast in the Missha is from beer. SKII contains 90% Pitera, Missha contains 80% of the yeast extract.

However, I've read many reviews that prefer the Missha over SKII. I think perhaps it's because of the other actives in the Missha (like niacinnamide) that are lacking in SKII.

For those who are interested, here are the ingredient lists for both:

SKIIFacial Treatment Essence: Saccharomycopsis Ferment Filtrate(90%), Butylene Glycol, Pentylene Glycol, Aqua (Water/ Eau), Sodium Benzoate, Methylparaben, Sorbic Acid

Missha's Time Revolution Treatment Essence: Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate (80%),Propanediol,Glycyrrhiza Glabra ( Licorice Root Extract ), Niacinamide, Polyquaternium-51, Bifida Ferment Lysate, Ulmus Davidiana Root Extract, Raffinose, Amaranthus Caudatus Seed, Piper Methysticum Leaf/Root Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root, Portulaca Oleracea Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis, Chamomile Extract, Phellodendron Amurense Bark, Cassia Alata Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Glycerin, Pentylene Glycol, Hydrolyzed Corn Starch, Tromethamine, Water, Adenosine, Ethylhexylglycerin, Lactic Acid, Phenoxyethanol

I'm starting to think that "essences" are the new hot thing in skincare as I just read something in a magazine a few days ago that estee lauder and clinique both have this type of product in their lines now as well. There was another brand mentioned in the article that I don't remember. I've actually been curious about trying the SKII one for awhile but never took the plunge because of $, so trying the missha one seems like a good place to start. The clinique one is comparable $ wise to the missha, but I couldn't find any ingredient list to compare w/ the missha, so I went with the missha - hopefully it won't take too long to receive since I've never ordered from them before.

The clinique one is comparable $ wise to the missha, but I couldn't find any ingredient list to compare w/ the missha, so I went with the missha - hopefully it won't take too long to receive since I've never ordered from them before.

I found the Clinique essence ingredients for you. There are two formulas for different skin types. They both contain the same yeast extract as the Missha, though further down the ingredient list and percentage is not disclosed. I have a sample of the combo to oily skin version and it was nice, very soothing. I didn't use it long enough to see any real results.

Clinique Even Better Essence Lotion Combination to Oily Skin ingredients: WaterAquaEau, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Citrullus Vulgaris (Watermelon) Fruit Extract, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Lens Esculenta (Lentil) Fruit Extract, Tamarindus Indicia Seed Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Laminaria Saccharina Extract, Cladosiphon Okamuranus Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Artemia Extract, Algae Extract, Biotin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Sucrose, Ergothioneine, Caffeine, Sodium PCA, Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, Trehalose, Acetyl Glucosamine, Polysorbate 20, Caprylyl Glycol, Dextrin, Hexylene Glycol, Sodium Lactate, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol

Clinique Even Better Treatment Essence Lotion Dry to Very Dry Skin ingredients: WaterAquaEau, Bis-PEG 18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Pentene Glycol, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Extract, Tamarindus Indicia Seed Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Cladosiphon Okamuranus Extract, Lens Esculenta (Lentil) Fruit Extract, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Citrullus Vulgaris (Watermelon) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate, Hordeum Vulgare (Barley) ExtractExtrait D’Orge, Artemia Extract, Algae Extract, Biotin, Ergothioneine, Caffeine, Sucrose, Sodium Lactate, Acetyl Glucosamine, Squalane, Trehalose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Jojoba Esters, PEG-32, Caprylyl Glycol, PEF-6, Polysorbate 20, Dextrin, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearic Acid, Sodium PCA, Glyceryl Stearate, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Hexylene Glycol, Sodium Hydroxide, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol

Tom's of Maine uses it as a base for their deodorant. Apparently, it is also safe for consumption. Just some google-izing I did.

Thanks FUTURE.
