I use the Coleur (sp) Experte kit from L'Oreal - love it and it's so easy. My hair is light auburn, so the copper color works perfectly.

I have several inches of "root" showing because I freaking hate getting my hair done. I love the look and my colorist is great but it takes a minimum of 3 hours every time...so I avoid it like the plague and only go when my color starts looking "ombre," ha ha! I am considering trying an at home kit for color and highlights but I am a little concerned since I already have highlights and color on 3/4 of my hair. Anyone else brave enough to have done this??

I do both. You don't need to buy a kit that has both color & highlights. I use a Sally Ion color and then use Revlon Frost & Glow for highlights.

You're only doing your roots on the color, so you're not really touching the highlighted portion. I don't pull the color through to my ends. After I color, I put in some highlights maybe 1-2 weeks later. I haven't had a problem. I use a cap and just pull it through. I have light brown hair (level 6-7) and I use the Revlon Frost kit for brown hair. I was nervous the first time I did it too.

Oh I've colored, highlighted and cut my own hair for at least 25 years! I had worn my hair super short in a pixie style and spiky on top. I would always get so many compliments on this cut I was very reluctant to change it. I always highlighted my hair myself. But this past year I decided to grow out my super short hair and now wear it in a cute inverted bob. I now go and get it cut and colored/highlighted. My gal does a great job!

Worked great for me & MUCH less expensive than salon coloring. My hair is short, I could get 2 color jobs out of a box. I only did the highlight/frost once, as I didn't like the lighter hair on me, but it is certainly the way to go.

Has anyone recommended getting a retouch for the roots only? My colorist says it is better for the already color treated hair & more economical too. Even when she does the foil, it does not take 3 hours...my hair is not long though. Back in the 70's, early to mid 80's, I used to color @ home, but don't want to spend the time now, possibly getting towels soiled w/ the color or getting color on other things. Whatever you choose, best of luck!!

I always had mine done at the salon but tried myself and have been quite satisfied. Been doing it over eight years now saving quite a bit of money. Just tried highlighting for the first time and happy with the results. Used L'Oreal products for both.

I've been coloring and highlighting at home for about 6 years. For the base, I've been using L'Oreal Natural Match and for the highlights, Clairol Frost & Tip. Natural Match has been discontinued, but I hoarded and have three more boxes left, which will last me another 30-32 weeks, then I'll have to find another base product. I'm thinking of L'Oreal Healthy Look, but I will call the L'Oreal consultants for their input.

My hair is a couple of inches below shoulder length. Six years ago, I did the overall color with the Natural Match. I can't imagine an easier procedure. I just mixed the cream and developer and applied, left on my hair for 30 minutes and rinsed. Next day, shampoo. I waited one or two more shampoos before applying the highlights as I wanted some of the extra color residue to be shampoo-ed out so that the highlighting would be more effective, not having to go through extra layers of color, if that makes sense.

I then applied the Frost & Tip, pulling my hair through a cap. It takes patience and practice to use a cap and do it all yourself but, by now, I'm an expert at it. I leave the Frost & Tip on for about 25 minutes and then shampoo. It comes out perfect.

The color and highlights lasts me about 10 weeks. The next time, I usually just color the roots with the Natural Match base color and really don't need to redo the highlights until the next coloring.

I have never had to do all-over base color again after the initial color six years ago. I've only done root touch-ups with the same product and every other time, add highlights as in the procedure above.

I don't want to take a chance that those root touch-up products won't match my base color product exactly. The base color products cost only a couple of dollars more than the root touch-up products.

I often leave it on a little longer than the 10 minutes (20 usually) just to be sure. I have so many friends who use this and they have all been very satisfied!

I have done both - then I had my bad almost black dye job from my stylist. I color at home too - but I am too chicken to highlight.

There are hours of youtube videos with hints and tricks on highlighting at home. Some of them are professionals that are mixing their own color but you can find videos with people using the commonly available products.

I was also thinking about ordering eSalon hair color
