My nail tech is away this week so I went to a shop that I used to visit years ago. I use Revlon Colorstay Base and Topcoat and took that with me. After years of trying everything on the market, this works the best for me. The tech mentioned that sometimes women have trouble with their polish staying on because of the type of polish. She said there is lacquar and there is enamel. Most polishes are lacquar. However, many women find that enamel stays on better. I found this interesting because no one has ever mentioned to me. She said Avon, Jessica and Revlon are enamels. Creative Nail Design was an enamel. It is now CND and they have Vinylux. Creative used to have great staying power on me. I found this very interesting and thought that I would pass on to anyone having trouble with their polishes staying on.

The brands that you mentioned with staying power are gel polishes. Originally gel polishes needed to be cured under a light, but this is no longer true for many of them. Some European brands of nail polish have always used the term lacquer instead of polish.

As long as I use their base and top I can use China Glaze and OPI. Actually OPI stays on me much better. Vinylux also works pretty well for me. Their old line when it was Creative Nail Design worked really great for me.

I've always thought the names were interchangeable. Lacquer, enamel, polish and varnish, all the same thing to me. And if they're not gel/shellac, they all chip.

That's true for paint, but I don't believe it's true for nail polish. The difference between lacquer paint and enamel paint is nitrocelluose, which is found in lacquer paint and a staple ingredient in nail polish, no matter what the brand, name, or price. In nail polish, usually "lacquer" is just a word they use to sound more posh than they are or charge you more money. Same with glass files vs crystal files. They're all glass, but crystal sounds better. It's not the same as the difference between a juice glass and a crustal wine glass.

Maybe she's thinking about B3F polishes (just about all new polish lines are B3F now, though many treatments are not). Some people say that older polishes with Toluene, Formaldehyde and Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) worked better for them. DBP was the plasticizer that prevented chipping, so for some people, maybe the newer plasticizers don't work as well.

You can read more about some of those things here, here, and here.
