I am also allergic to black hair dye. It's a sulfur allergy. I cannot take sulfur medications anymore either. I had smaller reactions for several dyes before the big one which left my scalp very inflamed and with oozing sores. Horrible!!

This information is nothing new. It has been available to the public for many years. I actually met a woman who had this terrible swelling reaction to color at my place of work. She had been in the hospital for over one month! She said her head swelled to the point the skin burst open on her scalp!

Most women who choose to color do not care to listen to this information... much like a smoker does not want to see the commercials on TV showing Cancer victims with holes in there windpipes. Color is just chemicals... toxic and poisonous and the industry is totally unregulated. If you choose to color( I use to until I decided to go grey) you are just taking chances each time you color with an allergic reaction AND you are applying cancer causing chemicals to the skin on your scalp and pores on your scalp. I knew it when I colored... finally I woke up and realized that it was just hiding the fact that I have white hair... why should I hide it?

Oh... and it is just not the dark dyes that cause this reaction... it is any and all hair dyes.

It is so scary! I think she looks better with her natural color too. They should have a storyline that she becomes a blonde and stays that way!!

I would love to go to an organic salon. There is one I read about but it is far too long a trip to get there. It is totally organic and some of the colorists and stylists have survived cancer so they opened this salon. Too bad there are not more of these in more cities.

All boxed haircolor comes with an allergy warning. I haven't had any problems, but once I decided to try the brand they sell at Whole Foods thinking it might be safer. Well that gave me a reaction! My head was itching and burning; couldn't wait to wash it out! The color was not very good, either.

I had a mild allergic reaction to permanent hair color to first time I used it, and guess what I didn't continue using it to the point where I continued to be sensitized to where I ended up in the ER. I can't have much sympathy here.

I found a product that gives me coverage without the reaction.

I don't think she's going to want to jump in and dye her hair blonde after that, so she might cut it short and let it grow out its natural color. Maybe she'll even shave it off and tie it in to cancer awareness and her character can say it's to support a friend or as a part of a challenge like the St. Baldrick's Foundation sometimes holds. That would be an extra handful of making the best of a bad situation.

I never heard of such a condition, I'm not doubting that it exists or that she's going through it; I just think it's probably very, very rare. I have worked in healthcare for 30 years and never encountered this condition. So, I'm not about to stop coloring my hair black or near black just because some actress says she has some allergy.

My daughter has a PPD allergy (initials for a long name of a chemical ingredient in very dark and black permanent hair dye). Her face will swell like crazy, to where her eyes close, and she gets a terrible rash in the scalp, hairline, behind the ears, and nape. It requires her to get on a medrol dose pack (prednisone) to make it go away. The scaling from the rash has to run its course after the swelling goes down. She had her first occurrence when she was in beauty school. She's so stubborn that she actually tried again after several months and the same thing happened. Now she knows better. If she ever wants any black, she has to have it foiled in so the dye doesn't actually touch the scalp.

I think hair dyes today are made with less harsh chemicals than say 50 yrs. ago, but it's still a health risk. This was brought up as a factor when Jackie O. died of non-Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer. She dyed her hair very frequently for many years.

I remember when Elizabeth Taylor blamed her (benign) brain tumor on hair dye.

I have worked in healthcare for 30 years and never encountered this condition. So, I'm not about to stop coloring my hair black or near black just because some actress says she has some allergy.

This is just a wake up call....perhaps a little nudge... Information that you now have INCASE you notice symptoms at some point. As far as the condition being VERY rare, you are wrong. It happens often. We all hope it does not happen to us, or anyone....but it does and it can.
