Increase in the Price of Paula's Choice Products

I love Paula Begoun and her products but I remember her saying that you really shouldn't have to pay more than 25-30 dollars for a one ounce. I just saw she has a one ounce retinol product for 55 dollars. I am sure it is great and maybe even worth it but it just makes me question her a bit. Thoughts?

I've noticed quite often, you can get a comparable product quite a bit less than some of hers.

Her prices have went up over the years but so has the price of a lot of things. I notice that her products are advertised on a lot of websites now. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Her prices are still competitive but you can find cheaper alternatives for some of them. I know I was using her Resist Retinol Serum and I do like it but after hearing that it has less retinol than Alpha Hydrox Retinol product, I was a bit shocked. I've added Retin-a to my routine so I'm not in the market for a Retinol product but if I was, I think I'd try Alpha Hydrox. It's cheaper and has more Retinol.

I wait for the sales. I still buy her cleansers because a little goes a long way. A bottle lasts and lasts, and I'm still getting good results.

Love her Skin Balancing cleanser. I try other things but always go back to this product. I agree, a little goes a long way. I keep a smaller bottle in my travel bag that's always pretty much packed and ready to go.

I remember this also. Her products are okay and I've tried a lot of them. I always go back to other brands.

She has lost credibility with me through the years.

Every since she sold her company in 2012 the prices have gone up and the product line has expanded into some semi-questionable products. Not what it once was.

I didn't know Paula sold her company. That makes a huge difference in everything.

Interesting. Yeah. I've noticed the gradual price increases and now some products aren't really worth the cost to me when I compare the amount of active ingredient to other brands. I'll continue with her AHA & BHA.

This is kind of strange/silly/something, but the real reason I went on to another AHA (to Alpha Hydrox) was because several years ago, Paula increased her price! Now...I really can afford it, but for some reason, I did not like that.

When you study marketing, price point is also important that helps to establish your product.

But then when you study skin and ingredients, you get another perspective. This is the perspective I had when Paula's price increased that time.

On the other hand, I understand other factors that can drive price, and I am far from against profit!

But quality is quality no matter what the price. It's a constant search, though, and I still am affronted by cosmetic companies who exploit the situation.

The skin lightening gel with BHA doubled in price overnight when it went from a 2 oz to a 1 oz tube. I will not reorder.

Not sure about this, but I think her comment about not paying more than $25-$30 an ounce for product was made long before she had retinol products with more expensive ingredients. She started her line with cleansers and moisturizers which not only use cheaper ingredients, but she said that a long time ago.

I really like Paula and have learned so much from her over the past 30 years--BUT I've tried her products and in general not found them to be superior to other well formulated products. I think there's a big difference between what was available 30 years ago as opposed to now. Her products of the 'old days' were more unique and healthy at that time. Now it just seems to be another line of which there are many to choose from.

I wouldn't fret about it because her products always seem to be on sale.... but yes Paula did say that about the price of her products... and remember she is her own distributor so she doesn't have to pay for counter space, etc. for those products...

I didn't know that either.

I have noticed that there aren't as many across the board sales and discounts. She used to have 15 - 20% off everything about every 6 weeks. Now all I get is an email saying a few products are on sale. They just had a cleanser/toner sale a few weeks ago which was nice, but I just got an email saying they are on sale again. I already ordered those. I keep waiting for the BHA products to go on sale... I am still waiting.

wilma, from my experience, she has a different sale every month, usually starting around the 4th. I mostly wait until dermstore has one of their 20 percent (always 1-3 day shipping) promos, which occur quite often.

As fo her prices going up, well, all I can say is that I find her prices to be moderate -- higher than drugstore but lower than high-end. I have no complaints there.

The only two serums of hers that are more than $30 are her retinol and her Vitamin C. I use the former, and I won't hold her to something she may have said years ago that didn't foresee such topical products. I like the Retinol serum and think it's reasonably priced, although once I'm through with mine, I may, just may, try her newer 1 percent, also fairly priced.

I'm still not able to find any confirmation that her company has been sold.

I can't find any confirmation on that either suzyQ. I love her products and find them very fairly priced. There's always a sale on something or a promo code that you can use.

The only thing I could find was an article from December 2012 saying that Bertram Capital made a growth investment in Paula's Choice but she would remain the founding shareholder and CEO. Looks like she took on an investor/investment company to be able to expand her line.

Hope this works for the link on the newish owner. Somewhere recently I also read that they are closing their distribution center in Renton.
