Ala Clara Bow... How did they do it, and how do you get the curl to stay like that? They did those curls on bangs, too.

I think most of those retro styles were done via permanents, so apart from that...

Oh my god, time for you to tune into Turner classic network. They show it in old movies all the time. Those are Pin Curls. They twisted the hair into curls and used bobbi pins to hold it in place and let their hair dry - often overnight.

(or it might be natural - my hair would do the exact same thing in that cut)

I've always wondered how their hair was SO shiny...with it being so over-processed, etc...it always looked so pretty without looking greasy.

Girl!!! I was 8-10yrs old, sporting a pixie hairdo, rocking the cheek curl. I wore this pink hair tape all night long & I swear it tore off skin every day!!! I looked ridiculous, but I had 3 older sisters that did this...I'm sure I felt I could carry off this look just on the 'cool' factor alone!!! Memories!

Only thing they had back then was pomade. Ah! But what was in the pomade? That's what I want to know, too!

And I still cannot figure out what Jeanette MacDonald used on her eyelids to make them so shiny! Her & Bette Davis!

Was this in the 40s? I remember my mother (and my aunt) saying they had naturally curly hair, so all they had to do was wash their hair and curl it up on their fingers and pin it until it dried. They did get permanents too the ladies without curly hair. Short hair like that was very stylish then.

Going to the beauty salon once a week in the 50s was the thing to do, for a roller set and sit under a dryer til dry then the beautician would tease their hair and then spray.

And Dippity Do, I am not sure what they did before Dippity Do.

All I need to do to get that curl is push my hair behind my ears. It curls around them, and when it's not behind my ears, it holds the curl. I can't get rid of it if I try!

I remember in 1971 when I got the Farrah Fawcett hairdo (One of the Charlie's Angels) I washed my hair at night and put it up in pin curls overnight. In the morning I used to redo the curl with soft hot steamed roller. Pink tape..........memories of my Mom going to bed in the 60's.

Using the clothes iron (crazy---but heck, that's kind of what the CHI is ), Dippity-Do with HUGE rollers or beer cans---ouch!---Sun-In, and a picture of Jeanne Simpson in a Yardley ad in front of me. And Twiggy---so brave...lol...no curls in my era! Then Christie Brinkley...

Must have straight hair at all costs! I was the envy of all my friends when I got the first blow dryer in our group!

Maybe my hair is too long. It won't hold the curl in that direction, and it sure as shootin' won't stay against my cheek!

I wasn't asking about how they did it years ago, I wanted a today's solution.

Dippity-Do has a facelift with Curl Shaping Gelee and Curl Defining Cream. I'll look for those!
