Clogged Pores

I will only be purchasing Non-comedogenic products. I am 64 years old and have clogged pores on one side of my face. Looking at me you would not be able to tell but I see it. How in the world do you get clogged pores on one side of your face? I had to immediately use a facial scrub, do a little squeeze and place a saliyic acid (sp?) on the area (boy, did that burn). How does this happen? Could it be oil in your makeup? Can setting powder do this? Ladies, if you have any info. on the subject, I would love to hear it. Oh, I also did not know that facial washes can clog pores. Thanks.

Katcat, I have trouble with my pores and have found that the best way to handle them is a regular routine of exfoliation.

I can't answer your question, however. My experience has been pores that are not prejudiced; they clog pores all over my face. Equal opportunity offender......lol.

ETA: Do you find yourself touching the lefthand side of your face more? Even subconsciously, while reading or thinking?

My guess would be that you might sleep with the clogged side of your face on the pillow, or the clogged side might be the side that you regularly hold your phone up to, or maybe it's your dominant-handed side and so you more frequently touch that side of your face. Just guesses, though.

Which side are your clogged pores on? The side with your dominate hand? If you are side sleeper, is it the side you sleep on mainly? Does your hair touch that side more?

I avoid foundations with oil. I use moisturizers and facial sunscreens without oil. An antioxidant serum I use is the line's "light" version (PC).

I use BHA products daily. If I wear a full face of MU, at night I use a Clarisonic and toner.

When I want to pamper myself, I do a gentle scrub or masque or peel. I just got something like 6 or 8 samples from Sephora, available to VIBs.

If you ignore those little s*ckers, they will clog in a NY minute.

Using peels help. I use Erno Laszlo soap and cleansing oil, which as decongested my pores, but my favorite is Ole Hendriksen's Power Peel. I get mine at Sephora and it hasn't flared my rosacea. Dr. Brandts peel pads. Exfoliation will help a lot.

You might try using the Clarisonic and ,also, change out your pillow case for a clean one each night.

It's the left side of my face. I am right handed and start off on my right side and end up on my back. Sometimes I am on my left side but I am on my left side for a short period of time. I never had this so bad before and I was wondering if it could be my facial wash and that my pores are larger on the left side of my face. That's a guess too but I am going to try Neutrogena's Pore Refining facial wash to see what happens. You ladies sure give good advice and recommendations and I appreciate it.

Kat, I had pores the size of Montana (huge, I'm telling you, especially on my nose. Every night (it's one of the few things in my life I've continued) I use Dr. Denese's firming facial pads and follow up with Hydroshield.

Ever since I started using them (since she first came on the Q) the pores are no longer visible. When I was with my daughter (she turned 34 today) in May she commented on how pretty my skin looked. She has huge pores too.

She started using Dr. Denese (I finance them, expensive), but she commented the other day that she noticed the pores aren't as large as they were.

I don't know if that's what it is. I do know I don't have large pores anymore. I also about ever 2 to 3 days use Philsophy's sea salt scrub (it cleans out pores) when I take a shower, followed by Dr. Denese's facial cleanser.

All of that aside I still think the fact that every night before I go to bed, before I use the facial pads, I use one of those micro fiber wash rags. I run very warm water over the rag and wash my face with just water.

That's what I do. Just wanted to let you know what works/worked for me. Like I said, maybe it's a combination, I don't know.

I think the micro fiber pads really help keep the pores clear. Just a thought and you get like 20 of them for next to nothing.

Lately, I was having the worst time with clogged pores. I had been using Rodan and Fields because one of my friends talked me into it. It didn't do my skin any favors. Three days ago, I switched back to using my Somme Institute A Bomb at night, and my skin already looks 5 years younger, and the clogs aren't coming back when I remove them. I also use Boots no. 7 Microdermabrasion scrub a few times a week.

Seriously, KatCat, the name of the game is exfoliation (microdermabrasion), whether chemical (easier on the face) or physical (people sometimes overdo and cause micro-tears).

See what you like and then set up a regular routine. You mentioned Neutrogena's Pore Refining facial wash . They also have a pore-refining toner. And I would imagine a scrub.

My recommendation is to use a BHA product instead of a scrub. It's designed to clear out pores and help even out skin tone and surface. Paula's Choice has a 1%, 2% and 4%. Based on your skin, you can opt for the gel or lotion. Great CS. Call and talk to a SA and ask for some samples. They'll send them out free.

Please, whatever you do, please only try one new product at a time. You can make things worse if you try a few new products all at once and then you'd also never figure out what is actually working and what isn't.

Hi Kat - I had an issue with some overly congested pores (initially brought on by Philosophy). I've found that oil cleansing and regular exfoliation helped. I've also started using a Foreo Luna cleansing tool and eliminated moisturizer from my routine, and that made things even better. For me, there are enough moisturizing benefits in my toner, primer, and BB/CC cream so the extra skincare step of including a moisturizer was too much. I also like doing a weekly deep cleansing mask.

Kat, So sorry you're dealing with clogged pores. If I get them on the side of my face, I find that often it's a hair product that is the culprit. Have you used any new conditioners or styling products? Hair serums and conditioners are the most problematic for me. If not a hair product, it could be skincare. Are you using anything new?

In the meantime, I know you want them gone, but please be gentle because irritation with product overload can actually make them worse. Good luck.

Since I have been using Alpha Hydrox every night, my pores are cleaner. I had sebaceous filaments on my nose and closed pores (closed comedones?) on my chin. They weren't visible to anyone but me. The ones on my chin were about 1 inch below the corners of my mouth. Sometimes I could get them out and other times I would make myself sore, trying to squeeze them out. I was using the Alpha Hydrox for my rosacea and this was an added bonus. No more rosacea breakouts and no more clogged pores. It took probably a month or more before I noticed my pores had cleared. The only drawback for me is that the Alpha Hydrox stings my skin for a few minutes. I use the 10% lotion, 12% souffle or the 14% swipes.

I get them at Ulta. The brand is Alpha Hydrox, no Rx required. There are 24 in a jar and I cut them in half and just use 1/2 for my face each night. The 14% wipes don't sting anymore than the cream or souffle. In fact they are my favorite.

I'm confused here, people. I recognize the posters here as women who have given me excellent advice since I showed up as a newbie. I don't understand why AHAs are being recommended when KatCat's issue is clogged pores. Everything I've read and learned has told me to use BHAs for pore issues. I've read up on this because my skin is combo/oily and I have pore issues like the OP.

I don't mean to be rude. I just think that some of the advice to use AHAs is steering KC in the wrong direction.

If I'm wrong, it would help me to learn. Maybe someone could provide a link relating AHAs to pored.

I agree and you are correct- for clogged pores BHA is actually the better option over AHA. Plus it is more gentle. Not sure why some are recommending AHAs.
