Weight Watchers smoothies (I think these would be similar to shakes) are really good. There are the usual vanilla, chocolate but also seasonal flavors that are great.

I use one I get at my local health food store that came highly recommended. It's called PlantFusion and you mix a scoop of it with water or almond milk in your blender. It's very high protein, very low carbs, very low sugar, gluten and soy free and it tastes really good. It's really helped me to feel healthier and lose weight.

virgosun, thanks for the PlantFusion recommendation. I've been looking for a protein powder that is low carb and low glycemic, and also dairy, soy, and gluten free which is really hard to find. This looks perfect for me! For those who are interested, Vitacost carries PlantFusion at very reasonable prices.

I'm like the OP and want to use some shakes to jump start a diet.

How can I know what makes a shake good, or a powder?

I'm diabetic so I'm guessing high protein, low carbs. Yeah, I should go in for a consult with a dietician. But I freak out in those atmospheres. I'll start with shakes and lo-cal smoothies waaay before I'll keep that not-yet-made-appointment.

I don't mean to hijack the OP's thread.

I've tried dozens and dozens of brands of protein drinks over the years. My favorite is Premier Protein chocolate, in ready to drink cartons. It is available at Costco, Sam's Club, and (recently) some grocery stores.

Unjury brand was recommended to me by a few doctor friends. I guess it's always the best tasting at their medical conferences. I have several containers and they do taste YUM! You mix a scoop with milk, water, almond milk, blablabla and shake. High in protein.
