Does anyone know the percentages for top, mid, or base notes in perfumes? I haven't searched yet, but wanted to check here first. If you know about the notes, or top, miid, and base stuff, feel free to inform.

My impression is that notes have more to do with time rather than %.

There are no dedicated % numbers for top to bottom notes. It is a matter of how one wants each perfume to flow and what the initial opening would be, to what peeks out after that and then what is the longest lasting note of all, base. It's by the individual ingredients and the specific oil combining that determines what lasts how long. Vanilla, musk, sandalwood, frankincense have lengthy endurance in a scent. That's why you will see them listed in the base notes so often. Top notes are usually fleeting because of the particular oil (not brand, but scent) one uses. There are always many more oils and ingredients used than what is listed as 'notes'. Perfumers just list the main notes not the entire formula.

I personally take the listed notes with a grain of salt, so to speak. I will not buy blind based on them because I've sniffed fragrances whose every note sounded right up my alley, and yet the reality didn't in any way live up to my expectations.

I think the listing of notes is somewhat helpful (if you hate coconut, you''ll probably not like a coconut-laced scent), but I also think it's part hype. I picked up a rollerball of a new scent yesterday, and the bottom note was listed as "Chantilly cream." Seriously?

It probably also depends on each individual's skin chemistry. Some notes may last longer or be more prominent on one person than another. I can say I've loved many a perfume at first, only to really dislike it later. Seems I often don't care for the base notes in many perfumes. So I always try before I buy.
