A question about hair dye/the difference between semi-permanent and permanent.

Grrr, they discontinued my favorite semi-permanent hair dye so I was in Ulta yesterday and picked up a permanent hair dye by accident. I was wondering what the difference will be?

I have always used the semi-permanent because it gradually fads and in about 30-45 days I could re-color my hair. I know nothing about permanent hair dye and am afraid when I re-color I will have some residual color in my hair and it might take wrong and I will have a mess on my hands. My question is:

1)how long before you should re-dye with permanent hair dye?

2)does it fade just like the semi-permanent hair dye?

Any helpful hints would be appreciated.
