No SPF better than chemical SPF? Josie Maran

Heard Josie's comment about her derm saying he'd rather she wear no sunscreen at all than one with chemicals. I'm not sold. What are your opinions on this topic?

At least she wasn't telling the story about how she discovered Argan Oil.

Personally, I don't buy it, sorry. Just my opinion.

Personally, I prefer physical and am concerned about long term use of chemical SPF but I would not make that blanket recommendation.

Any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen. Of course, I'm sure her derm knows she can afford whatever, and I bet be recommended one to her. That is if the story actually happened.

I find her statement very hard to believe and I think it was irresponsible for her to say that. Even if her derm did say that, which again, I don't believe, she shouldn't have said that.

If her Derm made the comment, which I have no reason to question, then I see little wrong with Josie mentioning it. She didn't make a blanket statement that all derms feel this way or go into great detail about chemical sunscreens. More and more derms are taking this position so she really wasn't saying anything unfounded. Maybe it will prompt some to read up on the topic and they can then decide for themselves.

I happen to agree as based on recent research, concerns are definitely growing regarding chemical sunscreen ingredients and their long term effect on the skin. My choice is to avoid them as the research makes real sense to me.

IMO unless she has the research to back up the fact that no sunscreen is better than chemical sunscreen, it shouldn't have been brought up. I wonder if this was cleared by QVC's legal or would need to be cleared by QVC legal?

She could have presented the product by talking about the benefits of physical v. chemical sunscreen and left her derms recs out of it.

If Josie had made the statement without stating specifically that it was her Dermatologist's personal opinion, then I'd agree that she would have needed to back it up with more depth.

Chaz essentially criticizes all brands of shampoo for damaging everyone's hair yet it's never been questioned where he gets his facts from. At least Josie made it clear who said it. There's a fine line on many comments made during presentations, typical in sales, and as long as Josie herself didn't make any blanket statements about the chemical vs physical argument, I guess I just don't see the problem. Just my interpretation, nothing more~

That's crazy, IMO. I had a Derm tell me once that I didn't' need to worry about UVA protection. That was crazy, too. Lots of negatives associated with chemical sunscreens, but they're better than nothing.

I wear SS everyday. I prefer a physical SS but I will wear a chemical SS if that is all that is handy at the time. I won't go without one. I have heard about the new research but my choice is to wear something anyway until there is more conclusive evidence. My dad had a lot of skin cancers, so I am wearing whatever I can get my hands on.

It was a new discovery for her. Not the world. Why do people take it that way? Its been around for thousands of years in the Middle East.

No Doctor who wants to avoid Malpractice lawsuits says this kind of thing. I love Josie to pieces but her taste in Physicians is dubious if this is a true statement. I hope for her sake she exaggerates a bit.

I have heard her story about finding a gorgeous woman and asking what do you do to your face over and over again too. But, one day as Josie was saying this about this "woman" she slipped and said this model umm and then talked fast to get away from it. So I thought Hmmm, so it wasn't a random woman but a pretty model to begin with.

Thanks for the replies. I will say her comment caused me to do a little more research on sunscreen ingredients. I personally would still use something rather than nothing.

My family is very active in the summer and for hard, outdoor activities (hiking, swimming, kayaking, etc) I feel a chemical sunscreen is best. I prefer JM or Devita as a physical and apply those for daily, home activities.

I believe any sunscreen is best...who wants a sunburn??!!!

Sunscreens contain carcinogens, I'm confident her doctor did tell her not too use them indiscriminately. They also block you from getting the small doses of sun that are needed daily to get certain nutrients. Like anything else - they should be used in moderation and appropriately. You don't need sunscreen to walk outside for 5 min to get the mail or to walk from your car to the grocery store. Dermatologist are no longer telling people to slather on tons of it every day - the results in no exposure to the sun at all like really low vit D levels are showing up and are alarming.

About the Vit D...our pediatrician recommended Vit D supplements years ago because of this.

There are physical sunscreens. Zinc Oxide is a physical sunscreen. I have one I am using now and it goes in well and doesn't look like a mask. I mainly use them on my face and on my arms/legs when outside for a long period.
