Open oils

Does the two year "rule" go for open oils as well. I keep all my oils in a cool dark place .

I think the 2 year shelf life applies to the CCs. When oils go rancid, they get cloudy. We can't see that through the Wen oil jars.

I've been lucky with my oils so far but my collection has grown considerably and I'm concerned about purchasing more (future seasonals) at this point.

Before I really used the oils, I had an original FIG oil open about 4 years and never had any problem. Eventually the rubber started to break down but the oil itself was fine. Not sure if the newer oils would be any different.

Thanks for the info sueinsf, I have quite a few unopened that are over a year old but they're fine. I never stashed any opened oils though. I want to use some of my SOB and SHP and stash the rest for later use.

I've read that jojoba oil has a very long shelf life, that essential oils have shorter lives. Vit E (Tocopherol) is an anti-oxidant and preservative and adds to the shelf life. If you have any extra oils, you can keep them in the refrigerator and they will last longer.

Good suggestion to keep oils in the refrigerator. I don't have a large supply of Wen like many on this site but that is a great idea for those who do.

I didn't buy any seasonal oils this year and I'm making an effort to get through what I have before ordering more.

When oils are no longer good they turn dark & have a rancid smell.

The carrier oils, jojoba, olive, argan, do go rancid. The essential oils don't have a rancid smell, they just gradually lose potency.

I still have a little stash of Fall Ginger Pumpkin oil, one is open the others stored in a cool dark place. All look fine and the one I opened up just last week was perfectly fine. Think if stored correctly the oils will last a while. My original lavender which is 3 years old is still good.

I wouldn't toss it automatically, but I would look at the color and smell it before using it. (I guess the trick is to use those oils up before the expiration period! )
