ABC's 20-20, a wake up call on fake cosmetics

I happened to surf by this show last night. It was a real eye opener on fake beauty products being knocked off in foreign countries. They concentrated on MAC eye shadow, the chemical analysis was downright dangerous. What was news to me was the fact they are counterfeiting much cheaper products like Head and Shoulders. It is then sold online or in dollar stores. They even are counterfeiting the little blue pill and its relatives. So if the price is too good to be true, it probably is fake. I'm sticking to manufacturers' websites and trusted outlets like QVC for my beauty products.

Yes- I question most any drug store type products sold at the dollar stores.

Thanks for posting. Sorry I missed the program. I guess you have to be leery about purchasing from websites like amazon for makeup. Like you said, if the price is too low, it probably is counterfeit.

There was a similar story a few years ago about over the counter type medicines & especially items like toothpaste sold at dollar type stores and how a lot of them were counterfeit too.

reputable stores have been duped by counterfeits as well. i found out 2 years later that my chanel bag was a fake after selling it.

i was able to return it to neiman marcus after receiving it back. neimans looked through their records and they were able to track down that someone returned the bag that i purchased but they didn't realize it was a counterfeit, so it went back on the selling floor.

Ebay is a free for all as there are no regulations there. I feel far more comfortable buying on Amazon yet don't any cosmetics there because I tend to buy them more locally or on the websites who actually manufacture them. You just have to be sure the seller on Amazon is reputable, if Amazon isn't selling it themselves. It is usually pretty easy to do a search on the various sellers as they list their company's name.

Your pharmacist/drugstore may be another option. Web sites are questionable to me, they buy and sell in mass quantities and store things in warehouses like the Q.

I was shocked to find there are lots of sellers selling counterfeit Salux cloths -- it's like a $5 item! If something that cheap gets knocked off, nothing is sacred!

I heard about a rash of designer bag knockoffs several years ago -- that the stores themselves had been bamboozled. Thankfully the reputable ones (like Nieman!) will make it good. So sorry this happened to you!
