I Found Out My Cleanser Problem!!!

To all of you wonderful women who wanted to help me on my other thread about finding a good cleanser that's for sensitive/dry/allergic skin, I finally figured it out! I did order some products from two companies, knowing I could return if need be. If you read my previous thread, I've been in a real mess, barely using anything!

It's really so simple and it was actually right in front of my eyes, but couldn't see it. One of you ladies told me that maybe it was something I was using. I barely used anything but Cetaphil cleanser, mineral oil, Emu Oil, Evian water, Aloe, and rearely Albolene. I was a mess!

While waiting for my products, my girlfriend suggested to stop the Cetaphil and try the CeraVe Hydrating cleanser. I told her I had done that plus everything else, but she said to try it again but to take my time, and of course only use one product at a time. So I tried the cleanser for about three times, and you won't believe that the drying, flaking, etc. disappeared! And that's all I used. I then decided to try my Emu. But, I had ordered from Country Divine which I never used before, hearing so many good things about it. I used the Clear and only the cleanser. I can report that I'm 150% free and clear of ALL problems!!!!! Even my hubby and daughter asked me what I did because they couldn't believe how great I looked, and with NO foundation!

It was definitely the Cetaphil, and have to admit that the brand of this new Emu Oil is the tops because I Googled it! I will stay with it forever, lol, and will also try the regular, solid, and ultra also, because I'm so very impressed with them! When I receive my other products, I may try a few, and glad I didn't order much. I just want to thank you so very much for your help and wonderful advice. You're just the best, and I know I can come here for any problem and you'll be here to help. Boo to Cetaphil for the SLS and who knows what else! It was ruining my face!!!

Thanks so much, and can't believe it's something that I've used so very long! I just love, love the Country Divine for their awesome Emu Oil. If anyone has time, please go to their web site and look around. I've never seen a solid form, which is so good for elbows, knees, cuticles, dry places on face, etc. And their Clear, the most expensive but not bad is just the very BEST!!! I love this place and they have the BBB backing them up, right on the site! I have to admit that where I was ordering for many years, changed to a thick, yellow, heavy, and smelly product. So very disappointed that I had to search for a long time to find this one which has the best products ever! Will NEVER change!!!

Twins, you certainly worked long and hard looking for an answer. I was so sorry to hear about the bad reactions you had to suffer. I could tell how frustrating this all was for you.

Even my hubby and daughter asked me what I did because they couldn't believe how great I looked, and with NO foundation!

That's great you finally figured it out.

I know cerave and cetaphil are widely touted to be gentle but they personally wrecked havoc on my skin too. They stung and dried it out, even the hydrating ones. Cetaphil more so than the cerave but still. I thought you had already cut them out for awhile and didn't see a difference or that would have been my first suggestion. I guess I missed that part!

No, actually I always stayed with Cetaphil. It was the CevaVe that I never gave it much of a try. My other problem was not using more than one product at a time and wanted to add on more too quickly, called impatient, lol! Now that I took my time, I realized that it was the Cetaphil. It has SLS, propylene glycol, and parabens. CeraVe has none of these. I guess I didn't wait long enough. And the new emu was much more refined with no smell and a tiny bit of Vit. E for a preservative for longer shelf life. I would still love a moisturizer, and will try out the two I ordered, but in due time. I promise I will wait, lol, and be patient this time. It seemed to me that for someone so overreactive to 'natural' products that your skin was giving you a loud message and the Emu products are from an ostrich-like bird. I hoped you would stop the madness and start over and I'm glad to know you got good results after pages of help. I also thought something in your diet might be a factor (such as dairy or wheat or sugar or ????).

Oh no, the Emu is used in wound clinics around the world, and in hospitals for burn victims. I don't consider this in the same catagory as jojoba, argan, neem, nut oils, etc. I can't use plant or botanicals extracts. I do very well with mineral oil, Vaseline, and Albolene. One suggestion: do a google search for ""mineral oil absorption via skin into body"" as I remember researching it many years ago and found it was considered toxic both externally and internally. It's in almost all those ""moisturizers"" you use. IMO it has zero health benefits and the source is petroleum. I suspect your poor skin needs to BREATHE. Good luck. My final post.

So far, I am really liking Ceravie hydrating cleanser. I have just the worst reactive skin. So touchy. When I first wash my skin it feels a tad tight, not red or anything. But I use a washcloth with the cleanser and really rinse a lot. After a few minutes, it fees smoother and just fine. I've only used it for about 2 weeks, so I'm hoping I don't have a reaction. Cetaphil felt too harsh to me also. My derm. thinks this stuff is great but it's too strong or something for me.

I'm glad if you've found products that make your skin happy!

Congrats! Move on slowly but at least you have a reasonably priced cleaner that is easy to find and gentle on your skin!

Twins, last year when I was recovering from surgery, I used Cetaphil cleanser because the instructions include being able to use it without water. So I could just apply it and then remove the excess (I did use a damp washcloth when removing it).

Within two days I had developed a very nasty rash. I stopped using the cleanser, and it was gone within a day.

Here are the ingredients: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Stearyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben

An elimination method is often used to test for allergies. You go off what you are using for two weeks, then add back one at a time. My nephew is going through this again. He did it for suspected food allergies at 2 and now again at 4. We have confirmed an allergy to wheat, not gluten, so we are trying different flours for breads and the like. I left my sister with the bread machine and sorghum and tapioca flour and potato starch and xanthan gum to make him some bread. She still hasn't had how it has gone thus far.

Hi, and I'm not surprised about the rash, but so sorry that happened to you. Just look at these ingredients! Nothing good there except for the water, lol! I'm so pleased with the CevaVe and it has very good ingredients which is important. Thanks for posting this!

I can't remember the name of it, but it's something to do with the IGE and if it's under 35 then you're okay. I hope you can find out more about this, and your insurance will cover it. Before this test they used the RAST, but she said the IGE is more accurate. My bad ones are wheat, corn, dairy, and eggs. I don't even have to list shellfish and fish because I was in the ER for those, so never again. I do have asthma, and 'gums' can bring it on. So I would highly consider the blood test. HTH

Jimmy's allergist said he was too young for those tests and it can be traumatic for a 4 year old. He was 2 when he went for his first blood work testing. The skin test isn't a favorite. The blood test narrowed it down, but we did and are doing the elimination test to be sure. Right now it is tomatoes, which he doesn't like probably because they upset his tummy, cabbage, yep another green veggies kids don't like at that age, and wheat! When my sister first introduced wheat back to him it was in the form of a doughnut! A DOUGHNUT! She told me what she gave him and boy did she get an ear full. I told her a slice of bread was plenty enough than something covered in sugar! My niece had a stomach bug and the only thing she wanted to eat was a doughnut, and my sister caved since all she had been on was liquids. Up that came too! My sister can be dense sometimes. I had to re teach her how to use the bread machine, a Christmas present my grandmother gave each of us when we were in college! She is a math teacher, so she was questioning me not exactly measuring the flour but scooping, shaking to level, and dumping it in. She can be a bit OCD at times! She is at Amelia Island in Florida, where i will join the family for vacation on Wednesday, so she will try a Kroger or Target for Gluten-Free goodies and flours. We only have a very small section at our WM and none at our other grocers, Harvey's and Save-A-Lot.

What is mineral oil?

Clear, odorless oil derived from petroleum that is widely used in cosmetics because it rarely causes allergic reactions and it cannot become a solid and clog pores. Despite mineral oil’s association with petroleum and the hype that it is bad for or ages skin, keep in mind that petroleum is a natural ingredient derived from the earth and that once it becomes mineral oil USP (cosmetics- and pharmaceutical-grade mineral oil), it has no resemblance to the original petroleum.

Is mineral oil safe for skin?

Cosmetics-grade mineral oil and petrolatum are considered the safest, most nonirritating moisturizing ingredients ever found (Sources: Cosmetics & Toiletries, January 2001, page 79; and Cosmetic Dermatology, September 2000, pages 44–46). Yes, they can keep air off the skin to some extent, but that’s what a good antioxidant is supposed to do; they don’t suffocate skin! Moreover, mineral oil and petrolatum are known to be efficacious in wound healing, and are also among the most effective moisturizing ingredients available (Source: Cosmetics & Toiletries, February 1998, pages 33–40).

Mineral oil is not an ingredient to avoid unless you have oily skin, in which case the somewhat greasy texture of mineral oil won't feel the best (but again, mineral oil doesn't clog pores or suffocate skin).

Controversy

The confusion around mineral oil is also caused by some cosmetics companies and people who use the information about non-purified mineral oil as a scare tactic. The mineral oil used in skin-care products is certified as either USP (United States Pharmacopeia) or BP (British Pharmacopeia). The emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is a large, flightless bird indigenous to Australia. The oil contains several fatty acids, including myristic, palmitic, oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids. Emu oil has become an important component of the Australian economy. As a result there is research from that part of the world showing it to be a good emollient that can help heal skin. But along with the evidence that emu oil is a good emollient and the parade of companies promoting it for that, there are also companies promoting products containing emu oil for its antiaging, anti-wrinkle, and wound-healing properties.

So does emu oil live up to these acclaimed properties? Regrettably, none of these promises are supported by research. A study published in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology (August 1996, pages 159–161), looked at the "Cosmetic and moisturizing properties of Emu oil... assessed in a double-blind clinical study. Emu oil in comparison to mineral oil was found overall to be more cosmetically acceptable and had better skin penetration/permeability. Furthermore it appears that emu oil in comparison to mineral oil has better moisturizing properties, superior texture, and lower incidence of comedogenicity, but probably because of the small sample size these differences were not found to be statistically significant. Neither of the oils were found to be irritating to the skin." That's good, but it's hardly a reason to run out and by a product containing emu oil.

Another study, published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (December 1998, pages 2404–2407), concluded that applying emu oil on a fresh wound actually delayed wound healing, which is not a good thing. On the other hand, a more recent study compared the anti-inflammatory ability of emu oil with several other oils, including olive and flaxseed. The oils were applied to mouse ears after their skin was irritated with a volatile oil, and cellular irritant response was measured several hours later. The results showed emu oil had somewhat better anti-inflammatory properties than the other oils in the study, though not by a substantial margin compared to more readily available oils, including olive (Source: Lipids, June 2003, pages 603-607). Reducing inflammation is a valid reason to consider emu oil, but other oils (and several antioxidants) perform the same function. Moreover, none of this means emu oil is the answer for aging or wrinkled skin. Like many ingredients, it has soothing, emollient properties, but it isn’t the miracle marketers make it out to be. Emu oil's reputation is driven mostly by claims made by companies selling products that contain it, and not by any real proof that it is an essential requirement for skin. "
