I wash my brushes every time I use them with the liquid soap next to my bathroom sink. Since I use the brushes on my face and around my eyes, I want them pristine clean and as bacteria free as possible. I lay them flat on terrycloth to dry and don't have any problems.

I recently started to use brushes to put on my eye shadow and concealer. I used to use those sponge applicators and my fingers. Any suggestions on how to handle the brushes as far as cleaning them? I have Trish McEvoy, Suzanne Somers and ybf. I use a separate brush for each type of make up but how often should I wash them?

Right now I wash the concealer brush (TM) every other day since it's a liquid concealer but once a week for my eye shadow since that is dry.

TIA...

I noticed when I was checking out ELF products on their website that they carry a brush cleanser. I've read you don't need any special cleanser but this was cheap...

I just use liquid soap and water and only wash them when they seem dirty. I use an eyeliner brush and wash it each time I use it though. That's what I've done for years. Make sure to lay the brushes flat when they're drying.

I use Baby Shampoo to clean my brushes. I use to use a brush cleaner but that works just as well. If you just have one brush for liquid foundation & concealer every other day is fine, just wipe it off with a tissue. As far as shadow brushes once a wk. is fine as well as brushes for loose mineral foundations or setting powders. The same with the shadows etc. wipe them off with a tissue with every use. Some women wash them more often but I think what your doing is fine. If you have oily skin & you use a compact foundation/ mineral powder, I would get another foundation brush & wash it daily to not tranfer the oil from your face on to the product.

There any many inexpensive brushes that work well so you can switch them up with what you have now. Some of them work just as well as the more expensive ones. I have both.

To clean them since you have a few, just put some shampoo or a mild dish detergent in the palm of your hand, wet the brush & swirl it around the cleanser & rinse off & give a little squeese back into shape. Just make sure not to let the water run into ferrell of the brush handle but away from it. Lay on a dish towel or paper towel to dry.

Over a course of time I have collected quite a few brushes so I don't need to wash them as often.

Don't lay them down and don't hang them brush side up. If there is any validity to these tips I do not know....but I do see where the 'don't lay them down' makes some sense..

for the record I wipe my brushes with a tissue after each use; I wash much less often

I have that and love it. The kit is by Brush Guard and the "girdles" are called Brush Guards. You can also buy more Brush Guards from Walmart.

Here's a great tutorial how how to wash brushes: http://thebeautydepartment.com/2012/09/how-to-properly-wash-your-brushes/

Here's my favorite tutorial on drying bushes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3lwBfyV_OE

I did this until I bought Brush Guards, which do basically the same thing but don't dry the brushes as quickly.

Anything you use on your body or hair will work just fine. If you have a face cleanser you didn't like, use it up on your brushes.

Wet your brush, put a little liquid soap or cleanser in your hand, swirl the brush around, quick rinse under water, swirl again in your palm, rinse thoroughly, squeeze dry, set down horizontally to dry.

If you are a germaphobe, you can also put a bit of rubbing alcohol in a small bowl or dixie cup, you can dip the brush in the alcohol after you squeeze dried it or even after it has air dried and the let it redry from the alcohol which is fast since alcohol evaporates quickly.

If the time comes that you amass quite a few brushes, it gets to be a pain to swirl them all in your hands plus more dense brushes used for foundation are harder to clean. I have a video on brush cleaning that is super easy for heavy duty or high volume brush cleaning.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YM3Tc5eD1s

I don't make any money from youtube, I have no affiliate links, sponsors, free products, ad sense, or partners other than YouTube which allows me to use their edit software and music and in turn they get to put ads on my channel. If an ad pops up, I have nothing to do with it. I'm very small time!

I think brush cleansers are great for quick clean-ups then every 1 to 2 weeks or so (depending on the makeup they are used for) a more thorough cleaning can be done. I always let my brushes air dry hanging over a ledge to that air circulates 360 degrees around them. They dry within 30 minutes or so here because the air is so dry, even my thick powder brushes. One advantage to living in a dry climate is that everything dries really fast - from self tanners and creams to clothing, m/u brushes, overall household cleaning (wet floors) and everything in-between.

I use Mac's cleanser more frequently and it's super easy. Just pour a little Mac into my palm, swish the brush and towel off - don't really need water with that type of cleanser.
