I have very short hair and want to get it bleached light blond and then let the roots grow out, I know it is kind of an old style. Anyway, have any of you had this done. I tried to have my stylist do this and I ended up with very yellow hair??? she ended up just doing a very heavy foil on it to hide the yellow. She is usually very good, but not on this one. Is there a special process to be able to bleach hair from brown to light blond without all the yellow??? Help???

JeanLouiseFinch is correct. The bleach wasn't left on long enough and your stylist can use a toner on your hair to cut gold and yellow. I have very dark hair, not black but a very dark brown and my hair is highlighted to a very light blond. It is the same color of blond I had until I was about six years old. After the age of six my hair started getting darker and darker until it was the color of a dark walnut shell. I won't tolerate yellow or gold in my blond and my stylist does an excellent job. Joico Shampoo Color Endure Violet (sulfate fresh)will keep your hair from turning brassy and cut any yellow. It's the Violet color in the shampoo that cuts the yellow /gold tones. I use it three days a week and I never have yellow, gold or brassy tones. Ever.
On 6/11/2014 JeanLouiseFinch said:
She didn't leave the "bleaching" product on long enough and didn't tone it well.

My hair is light brown naturally. I use Feria #91 and it lightens it quite a bit - to champagne. Use an ash or beige blonde. Anything ""golden"" will make it yellow.

You stylist made an error if it turned yellow. She probably needed to leave it on longer or she didn't use the right color combo to do what you wanted.

Don't do it yourself, at least not the first time. Ask questions when your stylist does it and have her/him write down the brand, color name, etc for you. Then you can go to Sally's and buy the stuff and do it yourself.

It does sound like she did not leave the bleach on long enough OR she did not use a strong enough developer.

I'd be careful as ash can make your hair look green. You'd be better off with a neutral toner.

If you are doing it yourself, go to Sally's Beauty Supply. They will tell you exactly what you need to achieve the look you want.

Going from brown to white-blonde is done in stages. The yellow stage is where the processing stopped. You need to repeat the process from yellow to white with someone who KNOWS what they are doing because you risk damage.

I use Loreal Preference in the verylightest ash blonde...it comes out better when I do it myself than when I have it done at the salon once a year. My hair is a dirty blonde and I do it a light blonde...

Also, try the violet shampoo that you can get at beauty supply places...takes the yellow out. And there are the Wella toners there, too.

Check out the YouTube videos on the subject.

Also, ask your stylist what level lifter she used---maybe she used a weaker strength...sounds like you need HIGH lift.

I went from a medium brown to platinum. My stylist did it in two steps. I think he used different strengths bleach for the two steps. It can be very damaging to your hair so I would definitely go to someone who knows what they are doing.

Definitely go with a pro for this - you don't want to ruin your hair. I agree with the others - your stylist didn't leave the product on long enough - it needed to go another stage to get past the yellow and she can easily counteract that with the proper toner. I personally love the look of the darker roots growing out -- I have dark blond hair and have a heavy highlight that's a very light blonde and I like it best when I have 1/4-1/2 inch of roots -- it gives your hair depth I think. It's a pretty popular style here in N. Cal right now.

Ash can also make your hair gray. I made that mistake once at home and then I had a stylist who used an ash toner to tone down the yellow/gold in my hair and under her salon lights it looked okay. Out in natural light and at home, my hair was very gray.

Most boxed colors aren't going to have a high enough level of developer to go lighter than a shade a 2.

If your hair is very short, I would do it yourself at home...ASH won't go green or gray if you are using a VERY light shade. I have been doing it for years. Again, if you go to a professional, ask them to use a high lift product, if you have not been satisfied in the past with a yellow shade.

First, though, you might want to try the violet shampoo I mentioned.
