Hair Issue and Tipping

Last week I finally got my hair done after a several month long hiatus. Back in Feb I went to a salon where the stylist gave me a soft ombre look and I loved it. The salon is very far from me so I decided to try out a different salon closer to me. I knew it would be a bit more expensive but I ended up paying the most I've ever paid (almost $300), and the girl made it look nothing like the picture I showed her. Not only that but she was dead-set on using the bayalge technique (painted highlights instead of foils) I think because it's more expensive, and instead of a refreshed "soft ombre" look, she painted the bottom of my hair a dark brown and added blonde chunks higher than typical ombre, then left the top alone so it looks like I paid $300 for someone to give me roots!

She also told me about a $10 masque she was using on me and I thought she meant if I chose to purchase it, it's $10..but nope it was $10 just for a 2 min treatment she didn't tell me about until it was in my hair and did nothing to help moisturize it! Needless to say I am venting because I am very disappointed in the turnout and service. I don't put a lot of money/effort into my hair so usually whenever I leave a salon it looks better than what I came in with and I'm happy but not this time.

Anyway, I am getting it fixed Friday by a more senior stylist. I am very happy the management staff followed up with me on my experience and wanted to make sure I'm a happy customer. The thing is, I tipped the other stylist a lot of money ($50)..I think for the hot mess on my head she gave me. The new stylist has to fix her mistakes and make sure I'm happy so I'm wondering what is a good tip (if any) for her since they are doing this no charge? Sorry for the long-winded discussion, just annoyed and needed to vent/get your opinions.

OMG what part of the country do you live? Is that the going price for a haircolor these days? Wow. I think it would be about $100 or so. I live North of Seattle in a small town.

To the stylist doing the corrective service, it's like a new appointment/service to her and you are a new customer for her. If you were another customer coming in for the same thing, she would be charging the going rate for their salon. Even though you don't have to pay for the actual service, tip according to that (which would be around what you paid the first girl). If the first girl was going to do the corrective service, you would not tip again.

Going rate you mentioned is what you pay in a big city, nice, hi end salon. Balayage is no more expensive than the foil method. I wouldn't pay for the conditioner unless I was specifically informed it was an extra cost.

I've had many, many, many color redos. You don't need to tip the person again. I mean think about it. You spent how many wasted hours in the chair and left unhappy? No, I'm not tipping for a expensive, time consuming service that I wasn't happy with.

She didn't just get color, she went in for a special technique of applying the color to achieve a specific end result. It's a lot more involved than just slapping some color on. More product is used, not to mention the expertise in planning for the right outcome, or the time it takes to put in all the foils. When my daughter does the ombres, she uses foils. I'm sure she doesn't charge $300, but it's not cheap either.

FYI............I get balayage all the time vs. foils. Not more expensive. I don't know about more color being used. But the colorist does need to know the technique.

Most of the color you see on actresses, stars, etc. today is balayage. More natural, soft, grows out better than a hard line foil look.

There's a way of doing the foils where you don't get that line.

What is ombre? I pay eighty dollars for a mini cap (I think the hairdresser gives me a break; I've been with him forever and he's an employee, he doesn't rent space.) That's a pretty simple color but around here (Boston area) fancy color is very expensive.

Usually dark on the top, light on the bottom. Some women do it the opposite way, but either should be well blended.

I remember when Khloe Kardashian went for this look - I thought she was growing out her roots because that's what it looked like. To the OP - I'd tip as if you had paid for the service IF and ONLY IF you are satisfied with it.

I have no issue with the bayalage and if you look up Guy Tang on Youtube he shows this technique and before and after's and he does it right! The girl I had...not so much :/.

Bayalage is supposed to look more natural and I thought ombre with the bayalage technique would be even better and I was wrong. What upsets me is the tipping...I tipped the first girl way too much for hating the final look she gave me. My hair looks nothing like the pic I showed and she literally gave me roots! I have no issue tipping this new girl but in total I don't want to have tipped $50 each to equal $100 just in tips when I wasn't happy originally. I wish they could give me a credit or something for my next service so it evens out..maybe I can ask that then have no issue tipping this next woman fairly for her service in fixing my hair?

It doesn't hurt to ask. If the salon is one where the stylists are employees of the owner, I think the owner should be able to do something along those lines. If the stylists are independent contractors, you may not be so successful. Good luck. Let us know how it all pans out. I hope you end up with an outcome you're happy with.

Cookie06: Prices vary so much across the country and it can be a real shocker! I usually get my hair colored in a rural town in Michigan and pay $65 for two color foil highlights. When I was in Naples, Florida for the winter I had basically the same thing done. I know it was my own fault for not getting a price quote prior to the service, but when I was told my services came to well over $400 I almost fell on the floor!!! Of course, I paid, but I never went back there. The girl who did it was from our church so it made it a bit awkward, but I just had to tell her I wouldn't be going back to her because it was cost prohibitive!!

I just saw the strangest thing on TV. Straight long dark hair, even cut. The last nine inches with a pronounced line were blonde. Looked like a growout, but I'm sure it was intentional. What is this called? Sadly, it was a back view of a girl at the current school shooting scene.

Why did you tip her so much if it was a horrible job? No tip would have sent the message. You should have been the one asking for management or calling when you got home. $300 sounds totally over priced. Sorry you had a bad experience but please express your displeasure when you go back. They should give you a free color & cut.

i would have only tipped the original stylist the minimum 15%.

yes, i would definitely tip the senior stylist who is going to fix it.....if it is no charge then figure out a tip by time. if it takes an hour, i would say maybe around $20 or so?.....if it takes more time then go from there.

Many years ago I went from very dark hair to light blonde (double process for those who are color savvy). The colorist who had been helping me was touching up my roots. She received some really traumatic news about a loved one during my service. I offered several times to either reschedule or be transferred to another colorist to complete the service. She insisted on completing the service herself. When I got home, I found I had a several large really noticeable green splotches on the back of my head. I have frequented the salon for many years and have standing appointments for most of my services. Everyone knows me by name and I usually tip well (as I did for that service) because I feel they take good care of me. I went back, very upset, and they were reluctant to help me. They wanted the original colorist to correct the error and she would not return for several days. I told them that this was not acceptable and insisted that a technician experienced in color correction help me. They had the department head stay late that night to fix the color gone terribly wrong. She did a great job and I was so grateful, I tipped generously (I did not have to pay for the correction of course). She was friendly and professional and was very gracious about having to stay a couple of hours late at the last minute. I was so impressed that 15 years later we are still together. I wouldn't change colorists for the world. The point of the story? Tipping well for your corrective service may well worth it in the long run if you intend to make this a long term thing.

I tipped so much because I'm a nice person and the color looked completely different when I got home and actually got a good look at it. I'm sure I'm not the only person this has happened to. Also, I left a message for them this weekend and that's why I figured they called me back but it turns out they just do that for new clients and hadn't heard my message yet.

Yes, I can never tell if I have the "right" color when I'm in the salon. I need to get into my own light and see it. As I said, I've had many, many, many, too many redos. They are always very nice and get me in ASAP. It's usually quick, no tipping & no hard feelings.

However, it is time wasted.
