I wouldn't use a toner that stings, not on my sensitive skin. Did you check for any culprits in the ingredient list? Alcohol, perhaps? Something menthol-ish?

When I was a teen, I used astringents, and they did sting.

I'm pretty sure clinique' s toners contain alcohol. Alcohol not only stings it is very drying.

If you use a good cleanser, there's no need whatsoever for a toner. The skin's pH will return to normal within minutes anyway, and it's just an expensive product that literally costs pennies to make. Most cosmetics/skin care have packaging that costlier than what goes inside, and that's especially true with toner.

I agree that there's no need for a toner. Use a good cleanser that removes all of your make-up and you won't need a toner. I use Simple facial cleanser that I buy at Wal-Mart. To answer your question, though, a toner is supposed to soothe, not sting.

wouldn't use a toner that stings. I do like using a toner after I wash my face in the evening and my favorites are Thayers Witch Hazel with Aloe or Alba brand toner.

Should not sting.....try Witch Hazel or Rose Water. I'm addicted to toning after cleansing so to say to go without is not an option for me.

I take it you don't use the glycolic pads for stinging reasons which is too bad because it makes such a difference in pumping up your skin routine. I use these after toning.

L'Oreal makes an excellent alcohol free toner. I know there are 2 camps which differ on the need for a toner or not.

Based on my personal experience, I've found that a toner helps to remove any remnants of dirt/MU left behind by the cleanser............as well as removing traces of the cleanser itself.

I think it leaves a light, fresh feeling. I use one appropriate for my oily skin. But there are toners meant for dry and/or sensitive skin also.

Your skin is telling you it doesn't like something in the ingredients. I've never been convinced that we need toners either unless using those with AHA's which are really for a different purpose than just toning.

It is stings, you also have to consider how it is affecting the ph of your skin. Decades ago, I tried a Clinique toner and it felt more like it was burning my skin so I never used it again.

If there is salicylic acid in the toner, that probably is the offender. They're putting that in all sorts of products. I had a bad skin reaction from a shampoo: problem was they were now putting salicylic acid in it. And it burned big time. After that if I purchase anything like that I read the ingredients in the store with magnifying glass handy. I won't go near any product that has that as an ingredient

ITA, and I consider this to be one. 8)
