I tried the LaMer cream a few years ago and wasn't impressed with the results. I am now using Algenist and like the products but I'm not sure I can say it has made that much of a difference. Some lines are softer and it works better than Philosophy in the eye area.

Hello Beauties!

I was recently at Sephora looking for a new moisturizer. The SA told me that Algenist is the same as La Mer but at a fraction of the cost, because they are both algae based.

Thoughts on this?

That's because they don't sell LaMer.

I've tried both and can't say enough about how awesome LaMer truly is. Have used it for decades, as has my mother, and we both have remarkably unlined skin. It's not only the cream, but I do think they're onto something!

There is really nothing like La Mer and I have tried everything. Tatcha (Renewal cream) comes closest to LM, not because they are the same, but because they work so well on my skin. I received a deluxe sample of Algenist and it was in no way like La Mer (at least for my skin). I find that because La Mer is so rich the 1oz size lasts as long as larger sizes of other less expensive (but not as effective) creams. If you haven't tried La Mer, it's easy to dismiss the wonders it works because of its price.

I've used La Mer for over 20 years and tried a few products from the Algenist line (due to the algae content). In my opinion, they are not comparable. My skin was sensitized by Algenist (which was quickly reversed by using La Mer). I understand that it doesn't work for everyone but I truly believe it's an extraordinary product and hope never to be without it!

The little pot of cream from Saks lasted at least a week and they gave me 2. I use it only at night and the 1oz lasts 3 mo. I use Tatcha in the AM. They have different consistencies, but my mature skin wants the original. My daughter in her 30's also prefers the original.

I like the La Mer oil free formula, never tried the original that is mineral oil based. I really think to compare it with Algenist is like apples and oranges, 2 totally different kind of products.

I used La Mer about 20 years ago and really wasn't all that impressed. To be honest though, I really didn't need it for anti-aging but more for the moisturization. It did a decent job but nothing miraculous as I have very dry skin.

I wouldn't make the leap that La Mer and Algenist are similar because both incorporate algae. I believe La Mer references marine based ingredients over algae specifically but could be incorrect on that. It's been a long time since I was really familiar with the exact ingredients.

I would think that La Mer would have updated their formula in the last decade just to include some of the power house ingredients now available but maybe they haven't. I do know they have added a lot of additional products to the line so maybe some of those contain peptides, antioxidants, etc.

With skin as dry as mine, I went through a 1 ounce jar in less than 2 months so I think how long it will last might depend on individual skin types.

With skin as dry as mine, I went through a 1 ounce jar in less than 2 months so I think how long it will last might depend on individual skin types.

wackers, here are the ingredients for the original La Mer:

Seaweed (Algae) Extract, Mineral Oil (Paraffinum Liquidum), Petrolatum, Glycerin, Isohexadecane, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Extract, Microcrystalline Wax, Lanolin Alcohol, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus (Eucalyptus) Leaf Oil, Magnesium Sulfate, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed, Medicago Sativa (Alfalfa) Seed Powder, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seedcake, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Seed Meal, Sodium Gluconate, Potassium Gluconate, Copper Gluconate, Calcium Gluconate, Magnesium Gluconate, Zinc Gluconate, Paraffin, Tocopheryl Succinate, Niacin, Beta-Carotene, Decyl Oleate, Aluminum Distearate, Octyldodecanol, Citric Acid, Cyanocobalamin, Magnesium Stearate, Panthenol, Limonene, Geraniol, Linalool, Hydroxycitronellal, Citronellol, Benzyl Salicylate, Citral, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Alcohol Denat., Fragrance

And here is the list for the lighter version (moisturizing gel cream):

Seaweed (Algae) Extract, Cyclopentasiloxane, Butylene Glycol, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Extract, Glycerin, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/Vp Copolymer, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Medicago Sativa (Alfalfa) Seed Powder, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seedcake, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Seed Meal, Eucalyptol, Sodium Gluconate, Potassium Gluconate, Copper Gluconate, Calcium Gluconate, Magnesium Gluconate, Zinc Gluconate, Tocopheryl Succinate, Niacin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Dimethicone, Sucrose, Trehalose, Sorbitol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Oleth-10, Caffeine, Tocopheryl Acetate, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Hydrogenated Lecithin, PEG-8, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Limonene, Hydroxycitronellal, Linalool, Geraniol, Citronellol, Fragrance

And the moisturizing soft cream:

Algae (Seaweed) Extract, Cyclopentasiloxane, Petrolatum, Glyceryl Distearate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Butylene Glycol, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Cholesterol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Steareth-10, Dimethicone, Glyceryl Stearate SE, Polysilicone-11, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Medicago Sativa (Alfalfa) Seed Powder, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seedcake, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Seed Meal, Eucalyptus Globulus (Eucalyptus) Leaf Oil, Sodium Gluconate, Copper Gluconate, Calcium Gluconate, Magnesium Gluconate, Zinc Gluconate, Tocopheryl Succinate, Niacin, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Powder, Water, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Peel Extract, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Crithmum Maritimum Extract, Salicornia Herbacea Extract, Plankton Extract, Chlorella Vulgaris Extract, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Seed Extract, Glycerin, Caffeine, Sea Salt, Micrococcus Lysate, Diethylhexyl Succinate, Adenosine Phosphate, Creatine, Hydrolyzed Algin, Isocetyl Stearoyl Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Sucrose, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Glucose Oxidase, Polyacrylamide, Acetyl Carnitine HCL, Glucose, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Tocopheryl Acetate Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Sodium PCA, Glycosaminoglycans, Urea, Distearyldimonium Chloride, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Sodium Hyaluronate, Laureth-7, Lecithin, Trehalose, Polyquaternium-51, Lactoperoxidase, Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrin, Cyanocobalamin, Pentylene Glycol, Fragrance (Parfum), Disodium EDTA, BHT, Citronellol, Hydroxycitronellal, Geraniol, Linalool, Limonene, Potassium Sorbate, Phenoxyethanol

thanks for posting this!! may get one of the oil free formulas down the road, when i have reduced my stash. really appreciate it, as,lol, wouldnt have gotten around to it on my own!!

I know La Mer has a dedicated following, but mineral oil and petrolatum are ingredients that other skin care companies brag about NOT including in their products. I believe men's skin and women's skin are different in many respects; yet, I've never really continued using anything I've tried marketed toward men. Most all of it is minty or smells like after shave.

Is La Mer strictly a moisturizer or does it also provide corrective properties of any kind?
