Creative way to store lipsticks/lip balms

I guess I could buy a lipstick organizer, but has anyone created something to hold them that costs next to nothing? I have wondered if a wire basket turned over would hold lipsticks. Any ideas?

There are acrylic lipstick holders out there, but you really need to pay attention to the dimensions because the compartment sizes aren't universal and some lipstick tubes can be larger than the compartment will hold or the design is just wrong (square tube in a round hole, etc.).

I picked up a couple of simple little hard plastic bin (maybe 4" x 6" x 2") and have all my lipsticks & tinted balms standing upright in one, glosses laying in the other. For those lipsticks that have a solid tube and you can't tell what color it is, I took paper hole reinforcement stickers and colored the lipstick on it then applied the sticker to the end of the lipstick tube. The lip glosses I have are in clear tubes so the gloss color is obvious. They just lay in the other little bin and I can easily see the colors in order to select the one I want.

I purchased from Walmart a 3 drawer, plastic storage. Height is 9 in., width is 10-1/2 in. and length is 12-1/2 in. I use the top drawer for foundation, powder & blush; 2nd drawer for lipsticks eye makeup & bottom drawer for brushes & sponges. It was about $10. Clear plastic & white edges.

JLF, I purchased one of those lipstick organizer thingies years ago and you're absolutely correct! None of my lipstick tubes fit into the holes.

I have a Rubbermaid silverware organizer in a bathroom drawer. It has 5 divided sections in it. One section holds my foundation and powder; one section mascara and eyeliners, one section lipsticks.... you get the idea. Probably wouldn't work for everyone.

Yes, I happened across a White Tube tray quite by accident when browsing at Target. Its called a ICE TUBE TRAY by Mainstay in the Utensills Dept. for only 4 dollars & change. I just thought while looking at it that it just might make a storage tray for my extra makeup brushes in my cabinet which worked out well BUT not only that to my surprise it holds 20 Lipsicks and or Glosses.

Small "Smart Balance" / "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" (or other) containers are great for lipsticks. I used these exclusively in the past.

I just use them "as is", but you could certainly decorate them, cover them with fabric, etc. I also use them for pencil cosmetics, nail polish, etc. (I sort the lipsticks in different containers according to color.)

I just use Smart Balance now, but if I remember correctly, the "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" containers were sort of decorative and didn't announce the brand.

Hope this helps! I'm sure other jars/containers could work as well.

(I'm thinking small flower pots, mugs, etc., would work too.)

At Christmas time I got several small glasses, jelly jar type thick walled ones that are sturdy from Target's One Spot clearance section. They are short & clear so I can use them for lots of things.

I've got lip balms in one, longer ones in another. I've got brushes in another. They look good & work great for my needs. I like having the balms/clear ones separate & not having to dig through all of them in one container. This keeps it easy to find the one I am looking for.

A few months ago when I went on a bit of lip gloss buying rampage, I decided that I needed to organize my lipsticks and glosses. I didn't like the hard-framed ones. I bought the Seya Clear PVC Cosmetic Organizer bag that has slots for 54 lipsticks. And it can be zipped up for travel. I absolutely love it. I bought it on amazon. I think you can also find it on Ebay. I recommend it highly.

It's 7.5 x 5.5 x 4 inches -- easy to fit into a drawer. I just leave it unzipped. It really does fit 54 lipsticks or glosses or crayons.

Put some marbles or glass chips (you can get them at the crafts stores) in a pretty container, then stand your lipsticks up in there. That way, any shape or size will fit. If your collection gets bigger, just use a bigger container.

I keep my lipstick and lipgloss is in a hot pink Sephora train case. I have two exceptions. All my Chanel makeup in organized in a Sephora train case (black of course). Lol. All Tom Ford is stored in a chocolate brown croco Sephora train case. Lip pencils and balms are stored elsewhere.

You could also repurpose a home decor item, like these from Pier 1.

You could also get a tray with an open weave and make elastic loops of different sizes to hold them in.

Here is a bamboo tray that might work.

I use Lock and Lock containers for my lipsticks. You can get the containers in a lot of different sizes and I had several so I started putting makeup in them. They stack and you can see through to see what is inside.

I bought the Seya bag and some of my lipsticks are just a little too big and get stuck in the slots and I can hardly get them out. It is a great idea though, and I am still trying to use it. I like to have them where I can see the name of the color on it, so they need to be able to stand upright, upside down.

That's weird. All my lipsticks and glosses (some quite chubby) fit, most with room to spare, and I do put them upside down so that I can see the color.

Truthfully, I think it's the most convenient option that I've seen. It's a small footprint for 54 lipsticks/glosses.
