I'm dropping my hairdresser for someone else! Should I tell her why?

My hairdresser of 7 years has steadily reduced her hours and the number of Saturdays that she works. At the same time, my work life is taking up more and more hours, making it extremely difficult to leave early anytime. It now takes about 3-4 weeks in advance for me o schedule a hair cut. I've decided to try another hairdresser that has a salon in the same building where I work (and I can get an appointment within a couple of days). So, what's the problem? I just feel guilty.....should I let my old hairdresser know why I'm dropping her or.....am I making too much of this? Anyone know how I feel?

You don't owe your old hairdresser anything, but if it makes you feel better, you can tell her why.

Yes, you're doing the right thing. I've been through this many times, and did let each woman know what my concerns were. One...reduced her hours, as you stated, and her earliest appointment time was 11 am, and she wouldn't show up until at least 11:15. The other, raised her rates about $10 every other time I went in. I let them know why I was moving on.

I don't think you have to tell her, just leave, but if she asks, sure, tell her. It isn't personal, just a matter of schedules. If she can't accommodate clients, she will lose them.

I would tell her. You never know, she might try to be more accommodating to you. It's not like you think she did a bad job and would hurt her feelings. If you tell her you won't feel so awkward if you ever run into her.

Sorry, but 7 years is a long time and I think it's just a courtesy to let her know why you're leaving. You have perfectly valid reasons and she should understand.

I try to put myself in their place...I would hate it is my customer abruptly left and never let me know, it just seems rude. I would always be questioning if I did something to offend or if I did something wrong. This way, you can explain that your reasons for leaving all have to do with the scheduling problems and hours you work.

There is no need for explanation. It happens all the time. I just left one stylist for another.

I think 7 years is a long time...I think you should tell her why you are leaving as a common courtesy. She should understand why, you certainly have valid reasons.

I just try to put myself in the other person's place in these type of situations. If it were me and my customer left suddenly with no explanation I would wonder if I did something wrong or offended her somehow. This way, you're letting her know that while you appreciate her, your schedule and hers don't jive. She should understand, but I do think she would appreciate an explanation for your departure!

I had the same thing happen to me after 8 years with the same hairdresser. I bought a nice card and wrote her a note explaining my decision and told her how much I appreciated her over the years. Sent it to her and never heard a word. I felt better for doing it and have no regrets.

You don't owe any explanation, it is business. If your hairdresser calls you and asks why you no longer go to her/him, then if you feel like you should explain, do so then, but otherwise, don't go out of your way and don't feel guilty- you have to do what is best for you.

ITA. Seven years is a long time, and it sounds like you have no complaints about her work. I would have no problem telling her the reason, it is not only valid, but it makes sense. She would not be offended. But, the industry is pretty "busy" in the comings and goings of the trade. Sooner or later she would find out, and she might feel bad thinking it was something she did wrong. JMHO

If you don't see her socially, don't worry about it. If you run into her, and she asks you about it, then tell her, otherwise, I'd just go to another hairdresser. She has undoubtedly lost other clients by changing hours.
