Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Diffused (the yellow one) -- Review

Okay, I’m painfully pale and have pink undertones, but decided on the Diffused for a couple of reasons. 1) Josh Collier said this is what he uses all over his face every day – and he’s pretty pale. 2) My pink undertones can tend to look ruddy, and now I’m using the Tria and am a little red, so hoped the yellow would cut down on that. 3) It’s #2 on the order of least to most pearlized – I didn’t want a highlighter all over my face.

As Josh reminds us on his vid, this is a finishing power, not a foundation. I’m at the point where I’ve almost given up on foundation as it tends to separate no matter what formulation I use. I attribute that to my sunblock, which I will never ever stop using, and since my skin is actually looking pretty good, I was thinking that all I might need is this as a finishing powder to cut that Sunblock Sheen.

Even though I know it’s not a foundation, I realize that’s kind of what I was hoping for, and it is not. Josh was right.

The yellow tones down the red, but doesn’t cover it as say Bye Bye Redness (or whatever it’s called) would do, but it’s enough for me.

It must be the most finely milled stuff on the planet. I can’t tell you how many powders I’ve tried (including non-talc ones – this has no talc, btw) that make me look as though Max Factor took a huge puff and powdered me down like they did in the 30’s, even though they all claim they don't do that. This does not do that AT ALL. It took away the sheen, yet doesn’t look powdery.

I’ve decided that I actually wanta little more “glow” than this one imparts, so will probably move on up the Pearlized Ladder. Jeez, I want to cut the sheen but want more glow -- there is no pleasing me!

I’ve read several reviews that people have tried a couple before finding the PERFECT one, so I’m not discouraged at all. And although this isn’t perfect, it’s close and if I can’t find what I think I’m looking for, I’ll be more than happy with this one. I'm keeping it.

PS – it doesn’t “read” yellow as I feared it would, so think it would probably be fine for others with the same complexion.

I'm so glad you posted your review! I've been waiting for it. I am really thinking of this one as well. I too want to move up the pearl latter which is why I also want Luminous! I'm very fair and wanted to tell you Dim is not too dark for me. It is amazing how they don't impart much color. You might try that one. Although I can't see much glow I think it's more glowy than Diffused. Josh says Mood has glow but I don't see it. Since you said you are Irish like I am if you have the opportunity to try Mood on at Sephora I would. It's so pretty on my skin. You won't look pink. .

So happy to see you! I responded to your post on the other thread, it didn't post, and haven't gone looking for it to try again.

I wanted to say that because of you, I'll probably try the palette. I was surprised that you like Dim -- wouldn't have considered it myself, but now I'm eager to try it! And Incandescent, try that on my triangle of light, etc., (or did you say that has NO glow at all?) SO, the palette might just do it for me, although not sure if I'd get much use out of the Radiant.

I have no doubt that I'll wind up with the Mood - it was what I was initially drawn to but was trying to be smart about it and start with a "basic", as it were. It was hard for me to order that yellow! Think I'll get the palette next since it's "limited", then go for the Mood.

THEN, on to the blushes!!

Do you have the brush? I think I'd like that, too, but I know it's not crucial.

ETA: Re: the "glow" of Diffused = essentially none that I can see. It's definitely not matte, not dry, just glow-less.

It's not a limited edition anymore! I still have the palette. It's growing on me. The incandescent does lighten your face but no glow! I'm trying not to fall for the blushes! I've been using Radiant over and under my blush. I used Mood over my tarte Exposed because that is what that blush Mood Light looks like to me. I can use the Radiant really lightly in the areas where I would put bronzer. It just gives a warmth. If you contour I think it would be great for that. I have a couple different foundations and this only looks good with my lighter foundation. If I wear foundation my exact skin tone then it will be too dark and leans orangy (the Radiant shade, not the others in the palette.) No, I don't have the brush. I mostly use them as all over powder and I have a big fluffy brush from It Cosmetics that I love.

Dim doesn't look peachy on me. It just gives me a soft look. I think of these as primer for over your make up. You know how primer kind of softens things up? But then you cover that with make up and you don't see that soft effect anymore. I use the It angled blush brush I got with my Matte sweet Apple blush. I'm sure I would love their foundation brush. I think that is much fluffier than mine! .

Even though they weren't selling the powder, you could tell they both had it on. Just soooo pretty! And I think of your description of a primer finish OVER foundation is spot on!

Or are you dipping your toe in with the palette?

Good luck!!

Yeah, that is what I wanted to know.

But it doesn't end up being any cheaper than Hourglass.

If I don't come up with the perfect recipe of the Hourglass, I'm giving up!

And I meant to say that I like the idea of Mood as kind of a blush. But I still want the blushes too, darn it!

Mood makes a great natural blush. I have to apply it pretty heavily to wear it as a blush. I'm afraid I will go through it too quickly that way so I've been putting it over blush. That peach Diffused blush looks amazing. Yes! YouTube made me buy these powders . Goss Make Up Artist and TiffanyD make me want that Luminous!

I'm a Wayne Goss fan -- not familiar with TiffanyD, though. Sigh. I fear I will be before too long. Maybe I'll be reporting on the Luminous sooner than I thought!

Do not look at TiffanyD, I am warning you! LOL. She's fair so I usually know from her if something will work or not. Oh, and she loves those Hourglass blushes!

I just got my palette last week. I am loving it and am so glad I bought it. I want mood also!

Ohh and the blush, so pretty can't decide which one to get first. I was suprised when I looked at them in Sephora that I liked Luminous Flush and Dim Infusion. If I picked without seeing them in person I would have picked Diffused Heat and Ethereal Glow.

Enjoy your new powder everyone! And please post a review if you get more powder or the blush. Thanks!

Thanks for posting your review Maren. Where are you ladies purchasing? I don't think I have ever seen this brand. I have heard of it though.

I have heard of it though.

I ordered mine from Sephora, and since it was under $50, I was charged S&H (I opted for Priority) and tax. I SHOULD have gone in and looked, probably, but there's no way I can go into a Sephora and get out of there for under a couple of hundred bucks. I figure I saved a wad even with the S&H and tax. :-)

If you have a Sephora in your area you could see it in person -- not sure where else it's sold (I just checked Nordstrom, apparently not?)
